Commentary | Isaac van Gerwen, born in 's-Hertogenbosch in 1580, married Duyfgen Fredricks Roch, baptized in the N.K. in Amsterdam on 14 November 1588, on 22 May 1605. Duyfgen, the sister of Maria Fredricks Roch of INVNO 236, was the daughter of Fredrick Roch (see R 154 of Montias1). Isaac van Gerwen was buried in the O.K. on 3 July 1647. He was a wine dealer, first in the Warmoesstraat in de twee Rochgen and, at the time of his death, on the Fluweelenburgwal. He was the son of Mathijs van Gerwen (born about 1540) and of Machteld van Maren. His brother Abraham (1575-1637) was a painter. Isaack remarried on 20 April 1614 with Maria van Warmont (1586-1621), daughter of Jacob Willemsz. van Warmont (who in turn was the son of Willem Jacobsz. van Warmont of R 29526 of Montias2). Her mother was Ytge Arents Bouwer, the aunt of Dr. Melchior Bouwer of R 27856 of Montias2. Isaack van Gerwen was married a third time, on 30 March 1624, with Bartha van Warmont, who was buried on 6 November 1632. From his second marriage with Maria van Warmont, there were two daughters, Ida van Gerwen, who married Pieter van Buren II, cited in the NOTES of R 31804; and Duyfje van Gerwen, who married Jan van de Poll (the son of Herman van de Poll), also cited in the INTRO (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p. 409). Isaack van Gherwen's third marriage with Bartha Warmont produced at least one son, Nicolaes (of INVNO 1174), born in Amsterdam about 1628 (Nederlandsche Leeuw 57(1939), col. 508). Another son of Isaack, named Matthias (of INVNO 427), may have been from Isaack van Gherwen's first or second marriage (see the TEXT of R 328). The van de Polls, van Gerwens, and Van Burens were all Remonstrant. Isaack van Gherwen owned at least 14 houses, many morgen of land in the Beemster and elsewhere, parcels of building ground, shares in the V.O.C. (f. 2,400 at face value), shares in ships (f. 14,800), seven grave plots, interest-bearing obligations (amounting to f. 34,400, most of them bequeathed to his son Mr. Mathijs van Gherwen) etc... His houses and land parcels, including the house Roode Kruijs in the Warmoesstraat, valued at f. 20,000, were assessed at f. 193,500. On 25 March 1642, Isaack van Gerwen, 61, Frans Bruyningh, 30, and Johan Santberghen, 20, wine dealers in Amsterdam, declared at the request of Matthijs van Gerwen (II), likewise wine dealer, made a depositon about skippers' exacting tolls from wine dealers who had sent their wares to Vrieslandt a few years previously (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), pp. 335-6). For a joint declaration of Izaack van Gherven with some other prominent wine dealers, see the TEXT of R 123 of Montias1. | |
