Commentary | In 1631, Willem Gerritsz. de Harde, the father of Gerard de Harde, living on the East side of the Breestraet, paid a tax of 50 f. (Kohier, fol. 227vo., p. 52). On 21 December 1634, Gerard van Straten was betrothed to Machteltje Blaeuwenhaen (DTB 443/172). On 14 December 1639, Gerrit Willemsz. de Harde was betrothed to Matchteltje Blauhaen, widow of Gerrit van Straeten (DTB 453/72). Dr. Gerard van der Straten, cited in the INTRO, was presumably a son from Machteltje's first marriage. Maghtelda Blaeuwenhelm (or Blaeuwenhaen) was the sister of Maritge Pieters Blaeuwenhaen, who was 22 years old when she was betrothed to Martinus Lydius, predikant in Coudum, 27, assisted by his father Lucas Jacobsz., on 17 December 1637 (De Navorscher 8(1858), p. 319). Maghtelda and Maritge Pieters were thus the daughters of Pieter Jansz. Blauwenhaen of R 37242, who was married to Dirckje Jans, the daughter of Jan Jacobsz. Fortuijn. Tiet Gysberts, whose portrait is recorded in the present inventory (R 5603 of Montias2), was the wife of Jan Jacobsz. Fortuijn. She was the grandmother (bestemoeder in the portrait) of Maghtelda and Maritge Blauwenhaen. According to the INTRO, Martinus Lidius, who, by 1666 was predikant in Grotenbroeck, was one of the guardians of Maghtelda's children. Joachim van Hemert (1612-1679), another one of the guardians of Machtelda Blaeuwenhelm's children, was a merchant, born in Dordrecht, who lived on the N.Z. Voorburgwal in Amsterdam by 't makelaarscantoor. He married Susanna van Hertsbeeck, the daughter of Paulus van Hertsbeeck, on 24 June 1642 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 612). Paulus van Hertsbeeck (or Hartsbeeck) was the brother of Isaack van Herstbeeck, one of the most important creditors of Rembrandt. He was a merchant, at first in Dordrecht, then in Amsterdam (1612-1679). His insolvent inventory of 24 October 1661 is recorded in INVNO 304. Mr. Willem Blaeu, who witnessed the inventory, was an important attorney (born in 1635). He became Schout in 1667 (removed from this post by Willem III in 1672). He married Anna van Loon, the daughter of Willem van Loon and Margaretha Bas on 5 May 1659 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 472). Willem Blaeu, former magistrate of this city, arbitrated a dispute between Herman Becker and Rembrandt in 1668 (Strauss, Rembrandt Documents, p. 578). | |
