CommentaryGillis Vertangen I was a jeweler married to Hester Colyn de Thovion. He seems to have died before 27 February 1597 when his widow was cited. He cannot therefore be the father of Jelis Vertangen, cited in the betrothal act below, who was born about 1602. The jeweler had a son named Gillis (II), who may possibly be the father of the owner of the present inventory, Gillis Vertangen III (see Jaarboek C.B.G. 14(1960), pp. 62-3 for a partial genealogy). On 22 January 1630, Gillis Vertangen, living in the house of Jan Oort, was invited to the wedding of Bernard de Moor and Clara van Capelle (Nederlandsche Leewu 44(1926), col.9). On 22 May 1631, Jelis Vertangen, from Amsterdam, 29, assisted by his mother Magdalena de Weert, living on the Heeregracht, was betrothed to Marya Gerrits, from Amsterdam, assisted by her father Gerrit Adriaensz. and her mother Aeltje Riewes, living on the Heeregracht (DTB 437/213). In a deposition of 25 June 1635, Gillis Vertangen, merchant, gave his age as 29, which would be four years younger than at the time of his betrothal. At that time he appeared, together with Cornelis Jacobsz. blue dyer, 28, at the request of Lucas Kipshaven concerning some dry indigo (NA 695A, Not. J. Warnaerts). In 1645, Lucas Kipshaven was said to be a bookkeeper of the Wisselbank and, in the same year, a cloth dealer (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), pp. 440 and 449). On 23 October 1631, Gillis Vertangen and Marya Gerrits had their son Pieter baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Gerrit Adriaensz. and Magdalena de Weert (DTB 6/319). On 23 April 1634, they had their son Harmen baptized in the same church in the presence of Davidt de Weert and Barbara de Weert (DTB 6/404). On a portrait of Barbara de Weert, see R 521 of Montias2. On 25 October 1631, the honorable Gillis Vertangen III and the honorable Maria Gerrits drew up their testament. She had just had a child and was lying in de kraem oft kinderbedde. The Orphan Chamber was excluded (NA 421, c.fol. 210, film 6438). On 18 August 1639, Gillis Vertangen and Maria Geraerts had their son Geraert baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Adriaen van der Hede (cited in the NOTES to R 30037 of Montias2) and Anna Lievens, widow of Gerrit Aerijansz. (DTB 7/217). The child of the couple cited in their testament was probably Annetje Jelis Vertang who, at the age of 19, was betrothed, on 4 June 1650, to Jan Jacobsz. van Sulpen of INVNO 1209, who at that time was a journeyman (the age corresponds) (DTB 665/24). On 2 March 1639, Jacques Boursse (II) (of R 20074 of Montias2) had a notary insinuate Gillis Vertangen (III) about his failure to pay a letter of credit for 500 f. (NA 419A, notaries Jacob and Nicolaes Jacobsz.) On 25 March 1639, Roelant van Haren had notary Jan de Vos insinuate Gillis Vertangen (III), merchant, regarding the acceptance of a letter of credit (NA 1186, Not. J. de Vos). The next day another protest on a letter of exchange was issued against him by the Portuguese merchant Manuel Dias Henriques. It seems as if Vertangen was insolvent or close to it (NA 1498, Not. Oly). The deceased owned the Institution Calvini and was probably Reformed (as were the Colijn de Thovions). He may have been the brother or the cousin of Hendrick Vertangen of INVNO 848. In any case, the two men were related via the family Colyn van Thovion.
