Commentary | Elisabeth Hermans van Limburgh was the sister of the retail merchant (kramer) Cornelis Hermansz. van Limburgh of R 27709. (The latter's portrait is recorded in the inventory in R 5907 of Montias2). Coenraed Willemsz. van Ceulen was also a lumber dealer. In November 1628, Coenraet van Ceulen signed an anti-Remonstrant petition complaining about the appointment of Jan Claesz. Vlooswijck to command the militia (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol.3, p. 501). On 5 January 1630, Coenraet Willemsz. van Ceulen contributed 3,000 f. to a joint investment of lumber dealers in wood-sawing mills (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 696). On 17 January 1647, Elisabeth Harmens van Limburgh, widow of Coenraed Willemsz. van Ceulen, was betrothed to Jan Jansz. van Dorhout. After her death, Jan Jansz. remarried with Annetge Jans Tiers on 17 January 1649. She was the widow of Jan Thivaert, sugar refiner and art dealer of R 20955 of Montias2 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 305). Jan Dorhout is identical with Jan Jansz. Dorhout, regent of the Spinhuijs from 1624 to 1627, who appears to have been portrayed by Nicolas Eliasz. in the group portrait De regenten en de binnenvaders van het Spinhuijs in 1628 (See Amsterdams Historisch Museum, Schilderijen daterend van voor 1800, Amsterdam, 1975/1979, Catalogue by Albert Blankert with contributions by Rob Ruurs, p.105). Among the books found in the inventory: Opera van Perkins, Historie der Martelaers, and works of Roelof Pietersz., all of Calvinist persuasion. |
