CommentaryOn 15 June 1620, Matheus van Halewijn, 29 years old, no living parents, assisted by his brother Martyn van Halewijn, living op 't Water, was betrothed to Elisabeth Benningh, 22, assisted by her mother Lysbeth Benningh, living on the Rockin (DTB 424/276). He and his brother Marten signed a petition of merchants calling for the strengthening of the currency (see the NOTES to R 25399 of Montias2). In 1644, Matheus Halewijn was said to be one of the two guardians (with Jeronomus Rans) of the children of Gommer Spranger (see the TEXT of R 224 of Montias1. Matheus van Halewijn was buried on 8 November 1646 (DTB 1100A/72). On 28 March 1647, an auction took place of part of Mattheus Haelewijn's estate. The paintings sold for f 565: 2:--. The prices cannot be matched with the works of art in the present inventory because, with the exception of a map of the battle of the Duyns (f 1:14:--), none of the priced items are identified by subject or artist. Sinjeur Marten van Haelewijn, the brother of Matheus, received paintings worth f 125:10 from his portion of the estate. The buyers at auction were Anthony van der Heede (who bought for f 207:15:--), Pieter van der Heeden (f 137: 4:--), Manuel Spranger (f 90: 8:--) and Frans Bruyningh (f 4: 5:--)
