Commentary | The deceased left 1500 gulden to the diaconen van de gereformde religie. Johannes or Jean Looten (1612-1676) was the son of Carel (Charles) Looten and of Maria van Hem (Nederlandsche Leeuw 16(1898), col. 2). Charles Looten, born in Brugge in 1574, first settled in Norwich and Leyden before moving to Amsterdam (in or before 1608) and died in 1652 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base and Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 307). Charles Looten joined a number of other Amsterdam merchants in 1643 who called for the stabilization of the currency (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 85). In 1614, Charles Looten was one of the founders of a company (with 27 other participants) in Drent to exploit the peat fields. The draining of the land was carried out by the famous engineer Jan Adriaensz. Leeghwater. In 1638 Charles Looten was named dikereeve of the hoogheemradschap (Van Dillen, Van regenten en rijkdom 1970, p. 226). Jan Looten was merchant in Amsterdam on the Heerengracht in de Moor. He was born in Amsterdam on 1 October 1612 and was buried there on 10 May 1676. He became Dijkgraaf van de Beemster in 1666. He was a Lieutenant of the militia in 1661. He was 22 years old when he married Elisabeth Hellincx on 23 january 1635. She was the daughter of Jan Hellincx of R 36235 and of Geertruid Hudde (the daughter of Hendrick Hudde of R 26928). She died in or shortly before January 1636 when her post-mortem inventory was taken (INVNO 1133). On 27 August 1635, Joannes Looten, as having married Elisabeth Hellings, declared that Hendrick and Gerrit Hudde (of R 26928 and R 7698 resp. of Montias2) and Isaack Moors (of R 26927) were guardians of his wife (NA 598, fol. 1, Not. Lamberti). Elisabeth Hellings was buried on 10 November 1635. For her post-mortem inventory, see INVNO 1133. Jan Looten was thirty when he remarried on 28 October 1642 with Apollonia Seulijns (1625-1670) II, the daughter of Willem Seulijns, silk cloth merchant on the Warmoesstraet (of INVNO 1197). Apollonia Seulijns I, daughter of Jan Jansz. Seulijns, married Abraham Pietersz. Sadelaer in 1639 (see the NOTES to R 21507) (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 708). The sister of Jan Looten, named Sara, was 19 years old when she was betrothed to Abraham Heidanus on 29 April 1627. He was predikant in Naarden, 27 years old, and assisted by his mother Clara van de Borne. She was assisted by her father Carel Looten and by Maria de Hem (De Navorscher 8(1858), p. 318). Jan Carelsz. Looten of this inventory must not be confused with the painter Jan Laurensz. Looten. Given the fact that two landscapes by Jan Looten were recorded in the present inventory, it is very likely that the two men were related. | |
