Commentary | Govert Govertsz. Souburch, about whom nothing is known, is presumed to have been the brother of Gerrit Govertsz. Souburch. On 16 July 1594, Agneta Jacobs Rauwerts, 38, living in the Warmoesstraet, was betrothed to Gerrit Govertsz. Souburch, oud Schepen of the town of Gouda, (DTB 762A/50). Agneta was the daughter of the well-known collector Jacob Rauwerts and the sister of Claes Rauwarts (INVNO 605). In 1591, Geraard Govaerts Soeburch was a partner in a company trading with Russia along with Jan and Jacques de Walle with Pompeo Occo and the bourgomaster of Gouda Marten Jansz. Moell (Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden, p. 243) The two crucifixes, one of alabaster, in the inventory indicate that Souburch was Roman Catholic. (The presence of Pompeius Occo, a prominent Roman Catholic, in the company trading with Russia, may also be significant). This is independently confirmed by genealogical evidence. Souburch belonged to a prominent Catholic family in Gouda (he was related to Maria Thins, the mother-in-law of the painter Johannes Vermeer). The estate of Gerrit Govertsz. Souburch is mentioned in Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p. 324. It included the Hofstede of Hoochcamer evaluated at 9000 f. | |
