CommentaryThe owner of the goods was a midwife who apparently cared for indigent women of the Reformed community. Johan Elison is presumed to be Johan Elison junior, the son of Johan Elison Sr., the English preacher who was portrayed by Rembrandt in 1634, along with his mother, Maria Bockenolle. Johan Elison Jr. kept Rembrandt's portraits of his parents until his death when the portraits were shipped to England (Schwartz, Rembrandt, 1985, p. 158).
