Commentary | Eleaser Swalmius, son of Henricus Swalmius I, was born in Rhoon in 1582. He became predikant in Poortugael and Hoogvliet in 1605, in Schiedam in 1612, and in Amsterdam in 1622. He was buried in June 1652. He paid a tax of 10 f. in 1631 (no address given). He married Eva Ruwardus or Ruardus before 1615. She was buried on 5 February 1659. The sister of Eva Ruardus, named Hilletje Ruardus, married the predikant Lucas Jansz. Ambrosius. Her daughter Tryntge Lucas married Jacques van Kermit (or Kermt) of R 25264 of Montias2. Her son Joannes Ambrosius, predikant in Loenen, was accompanied by Eleasar Swalmius when he signed a pre-nuptial contract with Christina Pieters, assisted by her mother Maria Claes and her guardians Cornelis Claesz. and Jan Claesz. Leydecker (both cited in R 24922 of Montias2), on 29 July 1632 (NA 988, act 2). Maria Claes was very probably the sister of Willem, Jan, Claes, and Griet Claes Leydecker. Christina Pieters may have been the sister of Jan Pietersz. van den Eeckhout, the father of the Rembrandt pupil Gerbrand van den Eeckhout. Willem Dilburch cited in the INTRO is identical with Wilhelmus Delbuerch, the husband of Caterina Swalmius, the daughter of Eliaser Swalmius. On 3 November 1640, Wilhelmus van Dilburgh, from Amsterdam, 30, assisted by his father Jan Dilburgh, living on the Keysersgracht, was betrothed to Maria van Belhoven, living in Leyden (DTB 454/507). Caterina Swalmius was presumably his second wife. On 3 August 1635, Jan Delbergh, citizen of Amsterdam, transferred to Franchoijs Cosijn and his wife (of INVNO 472) an alderman's obligation for 4,841 f. issued by Hendrick Frits in 1630. Willem Delbergh, in the name of my father, signed the transfer (NA 597, fol. 71-2, Not. Lamberti). Wilhelmus Delbuerch and Caetrina Swalmijus had their son Elijaszer baptized on 30 January 1647 in the presence of Gerrit Coren and Hendrick Swalmius, the brother of Eleaser Swalmius, who was a predikant in Haarlem (DTB 65/30). The notary Gerrit Coren was the husband of Margrite van Dilburgh, who was presumably the sister of Willem van Dilburgh. On 24 June 1646, Gerrit Coren and Margrite van Dilburgh had their daughter Geertruyt baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Maritgen Hendricx and Wilhelmus Dilburgh (DTB 8/94). Adriaen Banck was the husband of Helena (or Hiltje) Swalmius, the second daughter of Eleaser and Eva. On 3 May 1641, Adriaen Banck, from Schiedam, 23 years old, living in the Be[thanie ?]straet was betrothed to Helena Swalmius, from Schiedam, 22, assisted by her father Eleaser Swalmius, predicant in this city and by her mother Iffgie Ruwardus. Jasper van Wallendael, of R 20606,made an illegible declaration (DTB 467/72). Wallendael also came from Schiedam. Joris Aertsz. Banck, who was the father of Adriaen Banck, was a witness to the baptism of his son Nicolaes on 11 September 1629. On 30 August 1660, the merchant Adriaen Banck sold a number of paintings to Adriaen Baen, merchant in Schiedam, including a History of Susanna by Rembrandt, my portrait by Rembrandt, a sketch by Rembrandt, a painting of Lucretia by Van der Salmen, which may well be Jacobus Swalm of R 26412, and a large print of Eleazer Swalmius (INVNO 1119). Banck was the executor of the testament of Eleaser Swalmius and Eva Ruwardus. Isaack Junius was a battle and battle-camp painter, formerly resident in Delft. | |
