Commentary	Pieter (van) Buttinga was first noted as a notary in Blassum, where he laid his oath on 14 May 1631. He was later named Veenmeester (master of the turf) for Friesland. By 1644, he had moved to Amsterdam and become a director of the V.O.C. He married Maria Roos in Leeuwarden on 19 May 1633. She was the daughter of Claes Adriaensz. Roos, the brother of Cornelis Adriaensz. Roos (of R 31021 of Montia2), and of Clara Hortensius. Johannes and Nicolaes (van) Buttinga, the heirs cited in the INTRO, were apparently twins. They were baptized in Amsterdam on 23 April 1643. Nicolaes became a student in Franecker. Pieter (van) Buttinga died (or was buried) on 2 October 1670; Maria Roos died a few months later, two or three months before the inventory was taken (Jaarboek C.B.G. 23(1969), pp. 105-106). On 24 February 1639, Pieter Buttinga, 31, wine seller, declared that he had seen the ship of Jacob Reijntgens which was sailing to Groningen with a load of French and Spanish wine. The letters of freighting had been signed in Reijntgens's absence. The vat of Spanish wine was improperly marked (NA 1498, Not. Oly). On 1 March 1639, Gerrit Bartelsz. van der Hart (of INVNO 172), 24, and Jannetgen Michiels, housemaid of Pieter Buttinga, made a deposition at the request of Clara Hortensius (Buttinga's mother-in-law) concerning Elisabeth Roos. They said that Elisabeth had taken a trip to Leeuwarden and Bolswart with Dr. Tarquinus Heydema. Heydema had apparently said many scandalous things about Elisabeth Roos in an inn in Bolswart. Elisabeth had said that she wanted to marry Heydema (NA 1498, Not. Oly). On 16 March 1639, Pieter Buttinga, wine dealer, and Mr. Elbert Beernhardt, surgeon, constituted themselves as second sureties (contraborgen) for the guarantee given by Jan Spieringh and Jacob Muijs for Willem Everwijn of R 20426 of Montias2, for a sum of 2,546 f. that he owed to the wine dealer Jeuriaen Huybrechtsz. pursuant to a court sentence (NA 1413, film 1381, Not. F. Bruyning). Adrianus Buttinga, who was distantly related to Pieter van Buttinga, was baptized in Haarlem on 10 December 1645. He married Barbara van den Broeck, daughter of Gregoris van den Broeck on 19 February 1669. Gregoris van den Broeck is likely to have been a grandson of Gregorio van den Broeck of R 30845.
