CommentaryPieter de Clerck (or Clercq), born in Haarlem in 1601/2, was a dealer in silk cloth, later in asch and textiles, in Haarlem and Amsterdam, in company with his brother Jacques de Clercq, the executor of his testament cited in the INTRO, and the probable buyer at WK auction of R 20311 of Montias2. He was the brother of Sara de Clerck, who was betrothed to Abraham Couck (Koecke) 20 November 1610. (She is not identical with the woman of that name who was betrothed with Cornelis Carelsz. van Meulenbroeck, of R 20319 of Montias2, on 3 May 1614). Pieter de Clerck, who may be identical with the late owner of the goods in this inventory, signed the 1642 petition calling for the enforcement of currency regulations issued in 1622 (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken R.G.P. 59(1925), p.89). Sara Davidts, born in Leiden in 1605/6, was the daughter of Claes and Franchijna Roorijcx. De Clercq's family was Mennonite (Daan de Clercq's genealogy of the De Clercq family, kindly supplied by Anne Goldgar).
