Commentary	As early as 1614, Marten van (den) Heuvel had established a gilded leather workshop in the Heiligewegspoort (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 11(1924, p. 54)). On 6 April 1639, Pieter Outgert (of R 8222) made an insinuatie against Maerten van (den) Heuvel concerning the delivery of gilded leather (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, R.G.P., 144(1974), p. 225). Jacob Pergens, one of the two court-appointed curators of Van Heuvel's estate, was lord of Vosbergen. Born in Cologne, he married Leonora Bartolotti, the daughter of the rich merchant Willem van den Heuvel, alias Bartolotti, on 22 May 1640 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 388). On 29 January 1637, Anthony [...]. 42. maker of gilded leather, declared at the request of Marten van Heuvel, that he could not agree on the painting of cotton. The architect Philips Vinckboons signed the deposition (NA 1466. film 1556). Marten van den Heuvel employed Jacob Hamer (c. 1596-1669) (of R 33640 of Montias2) as his bookkeeper. When his gilded leather business began to fail in 1639/1640, he turned it over to his two sons, one of whom was named Martinus, and to Jacob Hamer (E. van Eeghen in Maandblad Amstelodamum 60(1973), pp. 30-31). It is not known when he died. It was probably when the business was in the hands of his son Martinus that the goudleerfabrik was visited by the German traveler Christian Knorr in April 1663. He wrote that he had seen there an eagle of chestnut-brown color, made of gilded leather, which, when its wings were spread, measured three ells (J.A. van Geelen, Duitse dichters in Amsterdam in Jaarboek Amstelodamum 43(1949), p. 13).
