Commentary | Jan Cornelisz. Wittekoe was a dealer in porcelain, which probably included earthenware. There were 62 pieces of porcelain in his inventory, scattered through most of the rooms of his house, valued at 225 f. On 24 December 1609, the Orphan Chamber held an auction sale at the request of Jan Cornelis Witte Koe, living in Dwarstraet behind Dirck de Vlaming (WK 5073/966). He was married to Fytge Claes (cf. the portrait of the couple in INVNO 425, LOT 0013). Jan Cornelisz. Wittekoe was the father of Gerrit Jansz. Wittikoe of INVNO 425, cited as one of the executors of his father's testament in the INTRO. Jan Cornelis Wittekoe paid a tax of 100 f. in 1631, at which time he lived near the Nieuwendijck over de sluijs (Kohier, fol. 81vo, p. 20). Jan Jansz. Wittekoe, who was probably the son of Jan Cornelis and the brother of Gerrit Jansz., was 20 years old when he appeared as a deponent in an act of 14 December 1638. He and Jan van der Meulen, also 20, servants (i.e. employees or apprentices) of Marten van Halewijn of R 25443, testified about a pepper shipment at the request of their master (NA 834). Finally Cornelis Jansz. Wittekoe, merchant, who was presumably also a son of Jan Cornelisz. Wittekoe, requested a deposition on 1 June 1632 from the bookseller Petrus Poppius, in which Poppius declared that Mathys Baers had been doing business with him, Wittekoe (NA 371, fol. 67). | |
