Commentary | Mattheus van Gherwen was the son of Isaack van Gherwen (of INVNO 237). Since he was of major age (over 25) when his father died in 1647, he had to be born before 1622. He may have been a son from his father's first marriage with Duyfgen Roch (buried on 10 February 1613) or from his father's second wife Maria van Warmont who was buried on 27 December 1621 (Isaack van Gherwen did not remarry with Bartha Warmont until May 1624). The first possibility is a bit more likely because he owned a painting by Rijnevelt, and the mother of Duyfgen Roch, his father's first wife, was named Lijsbeth van Rijnevelt. Yda van Gherwen, married to Pieter van Buren II (cited in R 31804 of Montias2), and Duyffje van Gherwen, married to Johan van de Poll (cited in the INTRO), were then probably the half sisters of Matthias van Gherwen. Niklaes van Gherwen (of INVNO 1178) was his half brother by Isaack van Gherwen's third wife Barta Warmont (see also Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p. 409). The inventory of the goods brought to marriage by Niklaes van Gherwen to Cornelia Warmonts, dated 24 February 1654 (INVNO 1174), contains several paintings in the present inventory. Mattheus van Gerwen, like his father, was a Remonstrant. | |
