Commentary | Pieter Martensz. Hoeffijser, born in 1581, was buried in the O.K. on 21 December 1647. He was receiver general of the Admiralty in Amsterdam from 1613 to 1641. His bankruptcy was linked to the loan of 248,000 f. to the Keurvorst of Brandenburg (see Montias, Vermeer and His Milieu, pp. 25 and 34). He married Aeltgen Sticke on 8 April 1603, daughter of Dirck Sticke, burgomaster of Deventer. His brother-in-law Hendrick Sticke, who was involved in a counterfeiting operation with Balthasar Claes Gerritsz. (Vermeer's grandfather), was beheaded in August 1620. On 21 October 1620, Pieter Hoefijser reported to the States General that the conduct of his office had suffered as a result of the pressure he was under owing to the affair of his brother-in-law (ibid. p. 276). Hendrick Sticke married Christina Hoefijser, who was apparently the sister of Pieter Martensz. Hoefijser. On Pieter Martensz. Hoefijser, see also Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p.358. Maria Hoefijzers, also a sister of Pieter Martensz. Hoeffijser, born in Amsterdam, was 26 years old when she was married to Willem Maurits Bax, cornet under the ritmeester Ripperda, on 27 April 1630. She was assisted by her grandmother Trijntje Tijmes and her brother Pieter Hoeffijzer (De Navorscher 8(1858), p. 317.) Trijntje Tijmes (Thijmons) was the wife of Marten Jansz. Hoefijser, the father of Pieter Martensz. She was still alive on 9 May 1636 when she gave a procuration to the stone carver (steenhower) Hendrick Jansz. to collect money that was due to her for rent on the sale by execution of the house de Swarte Paert on the Amstel near the St. Anthonispoort (NA 597, fol. 451, Not. Lamberti). The sculptor Hendrick Jansz. was apprenticed to the architect Hendrick de Keyser between 1594 and 1597 (Ann Adams, The Paintings of Thomas de Keyser, Ph.D. dissertation, p. 21). He was married to Jannetje Costers who died shortly before 8 April 1636 (WK 5073/789). | |
