Commentary | Joachim van Arras, married to Elisabeth Claes van Loenen, was the father of Odelia van Arras, married to Jacob van Ring (cited in the INTRO), of INVNO 460. On 4 July 1658, Nicolaes van Gijselaer (broker and painter?) sold to Jochum van Arras the house de Meniste Bruijloft on the Oudebrugsteeg (near the Nieuwen Dijck) for f. 21,960. This inn, in the past, had been used to hold auctions, including for tulip bulbs (see the NOTES to R 24908), and to play music. It had been bought from Juriaen Huybertsz., wine dealer, who continued to have music played in it, as it had been when it was owned in the past by Jan Theunisz., whose many occupations included wine dealer and teacher of Hebrew and Arabic. On Juriaen Huybertsz,, see the TEXT of R 148 of Montias1 and the NOTES to R 27584 of Montias2. Joachim van Arras was the owner of several houses on the North and the South side of the Oudebrugsteeg. After his death, on 1 April 1688, the house daer de Nijptang uythangt (formerly the house Santvoort), the Olijfant, and the Mennoniste Bruijloft were sold to the children and heirs of Jan Lucasz. Root (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 25(1928), p. 38). The Nijptang on the Water seems to be the house where Philips Pelt of R 28903 of Montias2 resided when he bought a lot in 1608. The religion of the deceased is inferred from the list of altar goods in his inventory. | |
