Willem Albertsz. Deutgens, mr. Ebbehoutwercker, en Elisabeth Rooswinckel, weduwe van de voors. Willem Albertsz. Deutgens sulck syluyden int gemeen [gepossideert] ende metter doot ontruijmt en nagelaten zyn, beschreven door mij Joannes Damour .... op de 22-en January ende volgende dagen des jaers xvi negen ende fijtich ....voor de meubele goederen geprysen sijn door twee gesworen schatsers, de gereetschap van de werck winckel door d overluiden van Sint Josephs gilde ende de schilderijen door twee schilders sulx als achteren ... uytgetrocken staet. Postscript: Aldus geinventariseert binne Amsterdam op het aangeven van Elisabeth Roomswinckel weduwe van zaliger Willem Albertsz. Deutgens, die verclaarde alles ter goeder trouw bekent gemaact ende haars wetens, niets des voors. boedel rakende verswegen te hebben, 't welck sy by eede ... te mogen amplieren ... int bywesen van [left blank]
CommentaryOn 30 December 1630, 200 f. were deposited in the Orphan Chamber on behalf of Willem Albertsz., ebony worker, for his mother's inheritance (WK 5073/789). It is evident, given this paltry sum, that Deutgens, starting from a modest background, became a highly successful framemaker (and probably a dealer in ebony). On 20 June 1637, Willem Albertsz., 36, and Albert Dircksz., 36, ebony workers, declared at the request of Herman Dommer, likewise ebony worker, that they had inspected some quantities of wood (probably ebony), some of which turned out to be good and some bad (NA 962, film 1174). Herman Dommer (or Doomer) and his wife Baertjen Martens were portrayed by Rembrandt in 1640. Willem Albertsz. Deutgens, framemaker and ebony worker, was married to Elisabeth Roomswinckel who survived him. She may have been the daughter or sister of the framemaker Herman Albertsz. Rooswinckel who was said to be making boxes for mirrors and frames in which to frame portraits in Amsterdam in 1620 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.P.G. 78(1933), p. 361). On 25 May 1648, Willem Albertsz. Deutgens, ebony worker, asked a notary in Haarlem to request in his name, out of the estate of the late painter Andries Muyltgens all such paintings that he had sent him (Muyltgens) according to his accounting (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1520). In the post-mortem inventory of the Leiden painter Jan Gerritsz. van Velsen, dated 5 October 1655, a debt of 36 f. that the estate owed to Willem Albertsz., framemaker, in Amsterdam was recorded. This was for frames for the portraits of Van Velsen and his wife by Drost (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, pp. 890 and 895). His son Willem (Willemsz.) Deutgens, doctor in medicine, 30 years old, was betrothed to Baertje Doomer on 24 April 1676 (DTB 503/95). Baertje Doomer was the daughter of Matheus Doomer and of Anna Luce. Anna Luce was the daughter of the painter and art dealer Lucas Luce (of INVNO 707 and of R 20173 of Montias2). Matheus Doomer (baptized in the O.K. in Amsterdam on 19 September 1619), in turn, was the son of Herman Doomer and of Baertjen Martens. The painter Lambert Doomer was 45 when, assisted by his mother Baertie Martens, living in the Hartestraet, he was betrothed to Mettie Harmens, from Arnhem, widow of Jan Block (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 141). Baertjen Martens was buried in Amsterdam on 6 January 1678 (Nederlandsche Leeuw 73(1956), col. 414). On 25 February 1678, an inventory of her possessions was taken at the request of Lambert Domer (the painter); Jasper Pietersz. de Wachter, husband of Geertje Domer; Mr. Jacob Brandt, wound surgeon, married to Agnietie Domer; Lucas Domer; Willem Deutgens, married to Baertgen Domer; and Hendrick van der Lindt, husband and guardian of Lijsbeth Domer. The painter Johannes Croon (cited in the TEXT of R 438) witnessed the inventory (Bredius, op.cit p.85). Sara Deutgens, a daughter of Willem Deutgens, married Dirck Cool on 18 March 1662 (DTB 482/541). Dirck Cool may have been the brother of Cornelis Dircksz. Cool. R.C. bookseller (cited in the NOTES to R 32237). Albert Deutgens, another son of Willem Deutgens, married Sara Verplancken on 14 January 1667 (DTB 489/407). The inventory of Willem Albertsz. Deutgens contained a long list of debts that prominent contemporary painters owed to the estate, presumably for frames. Among these debts: Paulus Hennekin, f 6:16:--; Pieter Coningh, f 172:14:--; Cornelis Rietvelt, f 35:17:--; Claas Pietersz. (Berchem ?), f 2:11; Jacob de Coningh, f 28:--:--; Steven van Goor, f 160:13:--; Jan Spilbergen, f 27:16:--; Jan Looten, f 74:13:--; Pieter Potter, f 7: 6:--; Daniel Schellinc, f 61: 8:--; Dirck van Riswijck, f 16:17;--; Lodewijck van Ludick (II), f 43: 4:--; Willem van de Velde, f 24: 6:--; Willem Schellings, f 28:15:--; and Willem Strijcker, f 62: 2:--. On 25 May 1648, Willem Albertsz. Deutgens, ebony worker, asked Notary Schoudt in Haarlem to request in his name, from the estate of the painter Adriaen Muyltgens (Muylties) all such paintings as he had sent Muyltgens (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1520. This request suggests that Deutgens may also have been an art dealer.
