Commentary | The merchant Frans Woutersz. (de Schott) bought a house for 7,000 f. from the widow and heirs of Hendrick de Raet, seemleertouwer (chamois leather tanner) on 14 June 1628 (WK 5073/9113). It is not clear whether the winckelhuis built on the Keisersgracht for the harpplayer Jan Matthijs, near the Hartestraet, by Hendrick de Raet refers to Hendrick de Raet de oude (the late owner of the goods in the present inventory) or to his son Hendrick de Raet de jonge (E. van Houten, Grachten, p. 47). Jan Matthijs was probably the father of Mathis Jansz., living in the Hartestraet, who, like Otto Burchersz. of R 38080 of Montias2, bought leather at the sale of the leather goods left by Burchert Otten on 15 April 1626. Jan Mathijs was also surety for Willem de Raet, who was probably related to Hendrick de Raet, at the same sale, and for Otto Burchertsz. (WK 5073/972). On 26 July 1632, Lijntgen (Catelijn) Verniers, widow of Hendrick de Raet (I), assisted by her guardian Abraham Anthonisz. (of R 20033 of Montias2); Jan [...], husband of Lysbet Verniers Frans; Catarina Verniers, the daughter of majority age left by Frans Verniers, all children and grandchildren of Maijken Verniers, last widow of Jeremias van Laken, agreed on a division of the latter's estate. Among the debts due to the estate were 450 f. due by the painter David Vinckboons, amounting to 400 f. capital and two years' interest. The children of Hubert Vernier were paid 7,400 f. (one of these children presumably was Machtelt Verniers who married the painter Daniel Thivaert, the son of Jan Thivaert I of R 20955). Abraham Anthonisz. was paid 75 f. for a half year's rent and 60 f. for salaris (NA 843, fol. 215, Not. Hoogeboom). On 8 September 1632, Catelyne Verniers, with her chosen guardian Abraham Anthonisz., brought 1,100 f. to the Orphan Chamber on behalf of her children whose late father was Hendrick de Raet (WK 5073/789). | |
