CommentaryCornelis Danckertsz. (a buyer at Orphan Chamber auction in R 34616 of Montias2) was a well-known engraver. He was the son of Dancker Cornelis Danckerts, youngest brother of the architect and surveyor Cornelis Danckerts de Rij. He was born about 1603 and married Elisabeth van der Heyden. Lucas van der Heyde, cited in the INTRO, may have been Elisabeth's brother. Cornelis is probably identical with Cornelis Danckert van Sevenhove who published various editions of Architectura Moderna by Salomon de Bray in 1631 and various other books related to architecture. He was a witness to Pieter Lastman's purchase of a house on 21 February 1631. He died some time before 6 October 1656 when the present inventory was taken. Cornelis Danckertsz. may also have been an art dealer. His son Dancker Danckerts, born c. 1633, likewise engraver, was buried in Amsterdam on 8 December 1666 (Thieme Becker). Cornelis Danckertsz., son of Dancker Cornelis Danckerts, should not be confused with Cornelis Danckertsz. de jonge, the son by a first marriage of Cornelis Danckertsz., city mason, who, on 15 May 1636, after the death of his father, was indemnified by Odilia Dircx, his stepmother, from a guarantee he had given to a loan obtained from Claes Jansz. Calckoen (NA 597, fol. 392/3, Not. Lamberti). Elisabeth Danckerts, the younger sister of Cornelis Danckerts II of the present inventory, married the surgeon and physician Dirck van der Noen (Haarlem 1608-Amsterdam 1642). Rembrandt painted portraits of Dirck van der Noen and of his wife Elisabeth Danckerts. After his death, Elisabeth remarried with Lucas van der Heyden (1617-1681) cited in the INTRO. He was the brother of Elisabeth van der Heyden, the wife of Cornelis Danckertsz. II. He was portrayed by Ferdinand Bol. The portraits by Rembrandt and Bol were kept by Elisabeth Danckerts until her death. They were then inherited by Cornelis de Keyser who had married Maria van der Heyden, the daughter of Lucas van der Heyden. It is not clear which branch of the extended De Keyser family Cornelis de Keyser belonged (see the NOTES to R 30861) but it may be conjectured that he was the grandson of Cornelis Dircksz. de Keyser, the father of the architect and sculptor Hendrick Cornelisz. de Keyser. It is doubtful whether he was identical with Cornelis Aertsz. de Keyser, cited in those NOTES, because the latter, born in or about 1600, would have been too old to be the chief heir of Elisabeth Danckerts (J. van der Veen, Onbekende opdrachtgevers van Rembrandt, Kroniek van het Rembrandthuis, 99/1-2, pp. 26-29).
