Martin du Gardin, gepasseert heeft een obligatie voor 1029 ponden vier grooten vlaems, te betaelen vande eersten januaris 1625 in ses maanden ... met speciale verbintenisse van juwelen, schilderijen, ende andere dingen begrepen in de specificatie te desen annex, bij den selven Hans le Thoor als sijn eijgene goederen sijnde, aenden voorn. Du Gardin als pondt, metter minne in handen gestelt, ende also sij te weder sijde genegen waeren alle questien ende differente daeruijt te ontstaen te schuwen, en die saecke int minnelijck ... te doen, soo sijn sij Comparanten met malcanderen verdragen ... dat de voorn. Martin du Gardin voor de voors. somme van een duijsent negenentwintich ponden vier schellingen vier grooten mitsgaders verlopen interest vandien, ende in volle betaelinge van alle 't selve sal behouden alle de voors. gespecificeert Juwelen, Schilderijen ende andere dingen ... Commentary | The paintings and the drawing in this inventory were pledged against reimbursement of a loan owed to Martin du Gardin by Hans le Thoor. There may be some question as to whether this was Hans le Thoor de oude who acquired the citizenship of Amsterdam in 1596 or his son Hans (or Jan) le Thoor, who bought pearls at the Hans van Maerle sale of 1637 (INVNO 270). But the contents of the inventory make clear that it was the older Le Thoor. For one of the paintings, a vase of flowers, was said to have been bought directly from Ambrosius Bosschaert in Middelburg, thus before 1615, when he removed to Bergen-op-Zoom. Since the younger Jan le Thoor was born in 1601 (see below), he could not have been old enough to have purchased the painting before 1615. Hans le Thoor I, alias Johan Letoir, born in Antwerp, living on the Gertruedenstraet, was betrothed to Adriaenken Broens, living in The Hague, on 1 February 1597 (DTB 762A/87). He was a jeweler who acquired the poorterschap of Amsterdam in 1596. He was also an art dealer who was associated with Guillaume van Rensselaer van Hasselt (Briels, Zuidnederlandse immigratie, p. 111). In 1618, he bought from Louis Finson (who was then lodging in the house of the painter Abraham Vinck) two paintings, one of the Massacre of the Innocents and the other of the Four Elements. In the same year he heard that there were eight fine paintings available for sale in Brussels that came from the Cabinet of Rudolph II, five by Spranger and three by Hans van Aachen. He had sent a description of these paintings to the King of Denmark. On 25 November 1624, Johan Letoir, art dealer in Amsterdam (who is probably identical with Hans le Thoor I) issued a complaint against the painter Pieter Isaacx, who had taken on consignment from Letoir two paintings by Ludovicus Finsonius, one representing the Massacre of the Innocents and the other the Four Elements, to be sold in Denmark, where Isaacksz. was court painter (Briels, op.cit. p. 111). Soon afterwards, Letoir/Lethoor had sent Isaacksz. a third painting that he thought might please the King of Denmark. When the paintings that he had consigned were not sold by 16 August 1619, he wrote Isaacksz. that they should be returned to Amsterdam. When Lethoor was in England, Isaacksz. had come to Amsterdam and had sought out Lethoor's children. He gave them the third picture that had been sent to Denmark but spoke only fine words (schoone worden) about the paintings by Finsonius without delivering or paying for either (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 130n of Nachträge). On 28 August 1625, Susanna and Adriana le Thor, daughter of Johan le Thor de oude (Hans le Thoor I), who was on a trip to Vienna, gave their consent to the marriage of their brother Johan le Thoor de jonge with Marguerite Toels, daughter of Toel du Quesnoy living in Leeuwarden. The wedding could not be postponed (NA 1303, fol. 213vo Hans (or Johannes) le Thoor II was born in 1601. He was a jeweler and merchant on the Keizersgracht who became one of the directors of the W.I.C. He married Margaretha Itoelsdr. (or Ismaelsdr.) Pluvier in September 1625. After Margaretha's death, he married Susanna Thiellens, the daughter of the silk cloth merchant Jan Thiellens, on 15 March 1650 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 560). It was presumably he, and not his father, who bought pearls at the auction sale of Hans van Maerle (INVNO 270) in September 1637. He was then said to be living on the Singel bij Jan Jansz. Uijl schilder. His sureties were Gerrit van Rijssel and Hans van Solt de jonge (WK 5073/962). The death inventory of Johannes le Thoor was taken on 25 July 1653 (NA 422, fol. 213 and fol., Notary H. Schaeff). On 13 July 1688, Daniel Schellincks (the painter), from Amsterdam, for himself and as guardian over the children of his brother Willem (Schellincks, likewise painter) gave a procuration to his brother Jacobus Schellincks. The latter was charged with requesting from the widow and heirs of Tielman Vleck, notary in Nieuw York, who had received a procuration from Johan le Thoor (II), the amount he had received of an obligation belonging to Le Thoor, which had been passed by Daniel and Willem Schellincks on 25 April 1652 (NA 4893, fol. 584). Marten du Gardijn, boratwercker (wool and linen cloth maker), was the father of Jan du Gardijn of R 25516. He was born in Lille. He was married to Police le Tor (or le Thoor) with whom he passed his testament in 1593. She was a close relative of Hans le Thoor I (probably his sister). Martijn du Gardijn was buried on 9 June 1645 (DTB 1130/108). On 13 July 1650, Dr. Franciscus Silvius, doctor in medicine, insinuated Elias Tael (of INVNO 127) and Jan le Thor as guardians over the estate of Martin du Gardin and of his widow Police le Thor. He claimed that alterations had not been made [as promised] in the house that he had rented on 15 February 1650 for two years at 650 f. per year (NA 1694, fol. 129). On 30 December 1650, an inventory was taken of the goods of Paulina (or Police) Letoir (le Thoor), widow of Marten du Gardijn (INVNO 366, R 283 of Montias1). |
