Commentary | On 10 June 1623, Haije Esdra, from Embden, betielbacker (platielbacker, faiencier), widower of Lysbeth Joosten, living on the Lindengracht, was betrothed to Aeltje Hendricx, 22, living on the Oude Cingel (DTB 428/55). On 25 December 1629, Heije Esdra and Aeltje Hendricx had their son Hendrick baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Hendrick Woutersz. and Femmetje Jans (DTB 6/260). Hendrick Woutersz. was (or became) an important stone or brick dealer who bought large quantities of baked hearth stones (bricks) from the brick cartel operating in Leiden and Rijnlant in 1659-1660 (Economisch-Historisch Jaarboek 2(1916), pp.229-260). In 1623, Esdra owned a house evaluated (by taxatie) at 3,000 f. He had debts amounting to 808 f. including 100 f. owed to Mary Symonsdr. On 30 January 1646, Haye Esdras, stone dealer, 50, declared at the request of a master carpenter that he had brought all sorts of steentjes to the house of David Rutgers (of R 37186). The steentjes were probably glazed tiles (NA 1079, fol. 192, Not. J. van de Ven). On 3 October 1650, Haye Esdre, 56, a master in 't plateel- ende schotelbacken for 25 years, Jan Ides, 52, 38 years in the trade and for 17 years a master, and Hendrick Matthijsz., 26, 15 years in the trade and 2 years a master, declared at the request of Willem Jansz. Verstraten, faiencier in Haarlem, that had seen two platters with a kop on each, with a coat-of-arms. They asserted that the platters could not be considered as a porcelain painting and that they had never painted or caused to be painted such a decoration, which must be considered a new invention. Verstraten, originally named de la Rue, was an important faien ier in Delft before he removed to Haarlem (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P., 144(1974), pp. 563-4). | |
