Commentary | On 6 May 1623, Anthonis Mattijssoon, leather tanner (huijvetter), 26, assisted by his father Steven Matthijsz., living in the Beulingstraet, was betrothed to Claartie Vermeulen, 19, assisted by her father Francois Vermeulen, living in the Elantstraet (DTB 428/45). Many leather workers and tanners lived in the Elantstraat. Anthonis Mattijsz. apparently became a broker at a later point in his life (as the INTRO indicates). The presence of predicants bortgens, including portraits of Wittwrongel, Junius and Carrentius, suggests that the owner was of the Calvinist persuasion. |
