CommentaryJacques Verbeeck I was a rich merchant who invested 6000 f. in V.O.C. shares. On 10 September 1605, Jacques Verbeeck, born in Antwerp, 30 years old, living in the Molenstraet, assisted by his brother Abraham Verbeeck, was betrothed to Catharina van Geel Jansdr., born in Antwerp, 21, living on the the O.Z. Voorburgwal, assisted by Daniel van Gheel (I), her grandfather, and Sara van Geel and Margriete Verbruggen, widow of Tibout van Pickere, her aunts (moeykens) (DTB 411/288). On 20 February 1610, Jaques Verbeeck I had notary Bruyningh notify Isaac le Maire, Jacques Damman and Steven Gerritsen that he, Jaques Verbeeck, had bought from them certain shares in the V.O.C. and that he wanted them to deliver the pepper dividend which the company had promised its shareholders (NA 119, fol. 10vo). Jacques Verbeeck I had an account of 3 folios at the Wisselbank in 1611 and 1612 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 229.) From the above INTRO, it appears that he had died in Italy some months before this inventory was taken. On Daniel van Geel I, see the notes to R 31393 of Montias2, on Adam Bessel(s), R 35042. For the auction sale of his movable goods, which took place in 1613, see INVNO 928 (R 830 of Montias1). Cornelis de Meyer de jonge was the husband of Jacques's sister Margerite. He received the net proceeds of the auction of the goods of Isaack Verbeeck (I), which took place on 27 February 1608 (INVNO 760). Another sister of Jacques Verbeeck, named Susanna, was married to David Joosten, still another, named Anne (or Tanneken), to Adam Bessel(s) de oude (the father of Adam Bessel de jonge of R 35041.) David Joosten and Adam Bessel(s) (I) are both cited in the INTRO to the present inventory. Abraham Verbeeck (another brother of Jacques Verbeeck) cited in the INTRO and in the betrothal document above, was presumably the merchant of R 36982 of Montias2. He was first married to Francina van Solt (I), who died on 27 March 1612, and then with Sara Clermont (De Navorscher 84(1935), p. 37). Jacques Verbeeck II, who died on 7 July 1625 and was said to be a cousin of Hans van Solt II (of R 21567 of Montias2), may have been his son or nephew.
