CommentaryOn (?) August 1637, Hendrick Broen (of R 7618 of Montias2) declared at the request of Mathys van Everbeeck that he had taken sides with Everbeeck in a dispute with Abraham Macare (NA 890, Not. van Zwieten). Many documents concerning the bookkeeping of Jan Macaree, the brother of Abraham, who was in business with Abraham, appeared in the protocols of Notary van Zwieten. The disputed accounts went back to 1626 (15 August and 18 August 1637 and so forth). According to a declaration of 5 June 1642, made at the request of Moscow dealers, Daniel Lescaillet had bought from Jan Macaree about 40,000 pounds of Moscow talcum, with which he had done good business, especially with candle makers who used it in their manufacture. But he had given so much trouble by the headmen of the candle makers guild that he had been forced to leave off the business (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p. 343). Daniel Lescaillet, of South Netherlandish origin, exported fats from Moscovy to the West around 1627. But the Russians made life so difficult for him, through bureaucratic chicanery and otherwise, that he had withdrawn from the business by 1642 (Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden, 1560-1640, pp. 345-6). On 19 August 1637, Isaack Hochepied and Jan Andries Meerbeck (Moerbeeck), cited in the TEXT of R 102 of Montias1 and in the NOTES to R 20033 and R 36738 of Montias2, declared that Abraham Macare was in the hides business, of which he owned one third and Mathijs Overbeeck (with whom he was in dispute) 2/3 (NA 866, film 580). On 20 September 1637, Abraham Macare was called merchant in Haarlem while his brother Jan was said to be merchant in Amsterdam (ibid,) On Nicolaes Duysendaalder, to whom the rent money cited in the INTRO was due, see the TEXT of R 78 of Montias1. On 17 June 1619, Emanuel van Baserode of INVNO 458 sold to Jan Macare, wool dealer, a warehouse on the Heeregracht, next to his house d'Appelboom. Macare sold it to Jan Gansneb Tengnagel, substitute sheriff (of R 19457) on 1 March 1629 (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 21(1924), pp. 143-4). By 4 July 1634, Jan Macare, merchant, was said to be impotent in body when he drew up a procuration (NA 728, film 5159, fol. 297).
