Commentary | On 14 February 1616, Sebastien Pittavin and Beatris Burremans had their son Eduart baptized in the F.K. in the presence of Eduart van Surc and Isabella Steccanus (DTB 130/22). Eduart van Surc (or Surck or Zurich) was a merchant born in Antwerp and first noted in Amsterdam in 1609 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 315). At the time of the above-cited baptism, Eduart van Surck was married to Susanna Hellemans. In a deposition of 13 March 1619, he was said to be 32 years old (NA 200, film 111, No. J.F. Bruyning). It is not known what family relation he bore, if any, to Antony van Surck of INVNO 541. After the death of Eduard van Surck, Susanna Hellemans remarried with Nicolaes Sohier of R 27451. Eduard Pittavin, who was baptized on this occasion, was the owner of the goods in INVNO 323 (R 241 of Montias1). On 11 December 1619, Sebastien Pittavin and Beatris Buremans had their son Abraham baptized in the same church in the presence of Emanuel van Surc, Madeleine Gemaert, femme de Herman Heester, and Marie Marten, femme de Guysbrecht Buremans (DTB 130/95). Emanuel van Surc, the presumed brother of Eduart van Surc, was a merchant of South Netherlandish origin who spent some time in Hamburg before settling in Amsterdam, where he was first noted at the time of the last-cited baptism (Gelderblom, loc. cit.) In a deposition of 18 June 1636, Sebastien Pittavin, sworn broker, 59 years old, declared at the request of the merchant Pieter van der Trille, that he had been present on 16 March 1635, when Van der Trille had sold a share in the W.I.C. at 115 percent (of the base price) to Johannes de Renialme (of INVNO 180), who still owed him (Van der Trille) 50 Flemish pounds (NA 695A, film 4821, Not. J. Warnaerts). In another act, dated 30 November 1635, Cornelis Wilmerdoncx and Sebastian Pittavin, sworn brokers, were said to be specialists in trading shares (NA 412B, fol. 383, Not. Jacob and Nicolas Jacobsz.) In a declaration of 1637 (exact date unknown, due to fire damage), Jan de Raet, 42, merchant (of R 25452), and Sebastien Pittavin, 60 (?), declared at the request of Nicholaes Sohier, also merchant, that Susanna Hellemans, the late wife of the petitioner (Sohier) was the legitimate daughter of Arnout Hellemans, the brother of the late Pedro Hellemans, and that Constantia Hellemans, 12, was her legitimate daughter (NA 948, film 1171, Notary Benedict Baddel). Sebastiaen Pitavin died on 2 May 1649 (INTRO above). The house de Bonte Mantel was located on no. 270 Heeregracht. |
