Commentary | It seems clear that Paracelsis is identical with Porcellis, if only because many of the lots offered for sale were of drawings of ships. Jan Porcellis was born in Gent, the son of the sculptor Pieter Varnewyck who settled in Rotterdam about 1584. He married in Rotterdam in 1604. He then lived in Mideelburg where he had a daughter baptized in 1606. He joined the St. Luke's guild in Antwep where he lived between 1615 and 1620. He moved to Haarlem in 1621 where he remarried in 1622. In 1624, as the present sale testifies, he was in Amsterdam where he acquired citizenship. He then spent some time near Leiden where, in 1629, he bought a house from Jan van Goyen. He died on 29 January 1632 (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 369). | |
