IntroductionOp den 27 april sestien hondert seventhien zyn dese naervolgende goederen vercoft naergelaten by Andries de Graeuw.
CommentaryAndries Martensz. de Graeuw (or de Grau), originally from Antwerp, was a merchant in silk cloth residing in 't gulden Laken in the Warmoesstraet. On 2 August 1586, Andries de Grauwe, widower of Hendrickje Moorinne, merchant, was betrothed to Maaike Delijs, widow of Michiel de Winge (DTB 662/45). On 1 april 1588, the couple had a child baptized. The witness was Anna Heijckens (DTB 1/ 355). After Maaike Delijs's death, on 15 April 1600, he was living on the Warmoesstraet when he was betrothed to Clarken van Dalen (signs Clara van Dalen), from Antwerp, 22 years old, assisted by her father Floris van Dalen (DTB 409/151). De Graeuw became a citizen of Amsterdam in 1589. He invested 1800 f. in the first subscription to V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 137.) Van Dillen thought he was identical with Andries de Grauw who paid a tax of 400 f. in 1631, living on the Singel (Kohier fol. 11vo., p.4), but in view of the above INTRO, the cloth merchant must have died before the date of the auction. The taxpayer was undoubtedly his son (on whom see the TEXT to R 187).
