CommentaryNicolaes Balestel de jonge, at whose request the goods were sold, was a merchant (1577-1650). On 31 October 1608, Nicolas Balestel de jonge, from Utrecht, 31, was betrothed to Christina Wolpherts, from Antwerp, 25, assisted by her parents Gerard Wolphertsz. and Anna Gabri, living on the Rouansche Kaij (DTB 413/311). Her father, Gerard Wolphertsz. van Diemen, was a leather merchant. On 9 December 1614, Jenne, daughter of Nicolas Balestel (de oude), from Atrecht, 29, was betrothed to Jean Gilles. She was assisted by her parents Nicolas Balestel (de oude) and Isabeau Paien (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 227.) In 1631, Isack Bevelot was taxed 66 f. 13 st. for the heirs of Nicolas Balestel, living on or near the Warmoesstraet (Kohier, fol. 10, p. 4). This may have been Nicolas Balestel de oude (assuming the death year of Nicolas Balestel de jonge, given in Elias, Vroedschap, p. 329, is correct.) A brother of Jean Gilles, named Samuel, married Elisabeth van Peenen, 26, assisted by her mother Margriete de Latfeur, in 1616. The daughter of another brother of Jean Gilles, named Brisse, married Samuel Chavatte (or Savaet) in 1616. (On Samuel Savaet, see R 26634 of Montias 2). (Van Dillen, op.cit. p. 227). Nicolaes Balestel de jonge was a buyer of art at Orphan Chamber auction (R 36475).
