| Commentary | The late Joost Pietersz. may be the silk dyer of that name, living in de Witte Roos on the Vlooienburch, born in Antwerp, who invested 2000 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares. He was one of the outstanding members of the Lutheran community (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 245). An individual named Joost Pietersen freighted one ship between 1590 and 1602 (IJzerman, Economisch Historisch Jaarboek 17 (1931), p. 270). An entry in the baptismal books of the Lutheran Community shows that Joost Pieterssen was the father of a child named Susanna, baptized on May 14, 1593, in the presence of the witnesses Augustijn Pijn and Volcker van Surck (DTB 138/12). Another child, named Joost, was baptized on 7 September 1592, in the presence of Jacques Abelijn and Jacomijntje Helemont (DTB 138/15) and one named Cornelis on 27 May 1598 in the presence of Hans Pieters and Maria de Copers (DTB 138/20). As usual in the baptismal records of the Lutheran church, the mother's name was not recorded. Hans Pietersz. of R 29891, who was a witness at the baptism of Cornelis, the son of Joost Pietersz., and Pieter Pietersz. of R 29293, were probably brothers of Joost Pietersz. It is possible that the Remonstrant Pieter Joosten, who attended a meeting of a conventicle of Remonstrants in February 1618 together with Pieter Pietersz. (his uncle ?), was the son of Joost Pietersz. |
