CommentaryOn 18 March 1607, Willem Arentsz. (Aertsz.), wine dealer, passed his testament. He named as his universal heir Arent Willemsz., his son from his first marriage, and his children by his present wife Giert Jans (Anna, Jan, and Hessel). He named as executors Jasper Caltschuyr and Pieter Dircxsz. Breevelt, wine dealers (NA 5B, fol. 144vo, Not. Pilorius, Extracten). On Breevelt or Brevliet, see below. On 15 May 1607, the inventory of Griet Jans, widow of Willem Arentsz., was taken, several of the art works in which could be matched with art works in the present sale. However, neither the portrait of Willem Arentsz., nor the two portraits of Arent Willemsz., his son by his first marriage, in the probate inventory, appear to have been sold in the present sale. Ian van Noort, living in Utrecht, owed 45 f. to the estate (NA 36, film 50, Not. Lamberti). The late Willem Aertsz. may also be the individual of that name who invested 900 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares in 1602 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 164). On 9 June 1615, Pieter Dircksz. Brevliet was appointed by the masters of the Orphan Chamber in place of Caspar Calschuer, vermits sijn impotentie, as guardian over the children of Willem Arentsz., wine merchant, together with Mr. Adriaen Muller, advocaet (WK 5073/513, fol. 152). Pieter Dircksz. Brevliet, wine dealer, was the brother-in-law of the printmaker Jan Hermansz. Muller, who in turn was the brother of the attorney Adriaen Muller. (On Pieter Brevliet, see INVNO 818 (R 722 of Montias1)). Part of the proceeds of the present sale were paid to Dirck Jacobsz. Heijn, who was also a wine dealer. He was the guardian of the children of the wine dealer Marten Spil (see the NOTES to R 31708 of Montias2). On 29 April 1625, the Orphan Chamber named Cornelis Dirxsz. Cool as guardian over the children of Willem Aertsz. wine merchant (WK 5073/513, fol. 33). On Cornelis Dirxsz. Cool, see the NOTES to R 32237 of Montias2. The son Arent Willemsz., who was a buyer at auction (R 31315 of Montias2), was also a wine dealer. He was embroiled in a dispute with the wine dealer Isaack van Gherven on 25 May 1612 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 8).
