Commentary | Jan Poppen, who indeed lived in de Gulden Steur in the Warmoesstraet in 1601, was born in the Land of Steur (in Holstein) c. 1545. He was buried in Amsterdam on 7 August 1616. In 1579, he was said to be a merchant. In 1594, he was one of the founders of the Compagnie van Verre (which sent ships to India). In 1602, he was one of the first directors of the V.O.C. He laid the basis of the fortune of Jacob Poppen (INVNO 292). He married 1) Baert Jansdr. and 2) Lijsbeth Pieters, born in 1544, a diaconesse of the Nederlandse Hervoormde Gemeente (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 286). He invested 12,000 f. in the first subscription for shares in the V.O.C. (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 108). He freighted 3 ships between 1591 and 1602 (IJzerman, Economisch-historisch Jaarboek 17(1931), p. 271). He was the uncle of Michiel Poppe(n) of R 7674. | |
