Commentary | On 31 December 1639, Hendrick Vertangen, from Amsterdam, 27, no living parents, assisted by his acquaintance Hendrick Colijn (of R 26959), was betrothed to Maria Jacobs, 28 (illiterate) (DTB 453/108). On 15 January 1640, Henrick Vertangen and Marie Jacobs had their son Joannes baptized in the presence of Ester Vertangen (DTB 42/175). Hester Vertangen was 28 years old (thus born about 1598) when she was betrothed, on 29 January 1626, to Jan Wybrantsz. from Elsen. On this occasion, she was assisted by her sister Claer Michiels (DTB 431/34). Both Hendrick and Gillis were cited in Jaarboek CBG 14(1960) as sons of Gillis Vertangen I and Hester Colijn de Thovion. However, neither the present Hendrick Vertangen nor Gillis Vertangen of INVNO 241 can be the son of Gillis Vertangen I since the first was born about 1612 and the second about 1602 whereas Hester Colijn was said to be the widow of Gillis Vertangen I in a document dated 27 February 1597. Then again, the mention of Hendrick Colijn in the betrothal act of Hendrick Vertangen and the presence of Ester Vertangen at the baptism of 1640 suggest that Hendrick Vertangen of the present inventory was indeed a descendant of Gillis Vertangen I and of Hester Colijn de Thovion. Ester Vertangen, just cited, cannot be the woman named Hester Vertangh, said to be the mother of Pieter Vertangen, on whose behalf Pieter invested money in the first subscription to V.O.C. shares in 1602 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 139). If Hester Vertangen II was indeed the full sister of Claer Michiels, who assisted her on her betrothal, there would have to have been a Michiel Vertangen, who was perhaps the son of Gillis Vertangen I (in that case, he was omitted from the partial genealogy of the Jaarboek C.B.G. cited above). Hester, Gillis (III), and Hendrick (II) Vertangen may all have been children of this Michiel Vertangen and grandchildren of Gillis Vertangen I. Hendrick Vertangen II, according to the INTRO, was a nestelmacker (a sort of lacemaker). |
