Commentary	Vincent Jacobsz. Coster, alias Sente Peylder, born about 1553, was an official wine gauger, for collecting excise on wine, and a servant of the Stadexcijshuis. He was perhaps also a wine merchant ( Oud Holland 6(1888), p. 105). He was the nephew of the burgomaster Dr. Marten Jansz. Coster. He lived in the Niesel in the Witte Calckoen. He owned a lunatic asylum (doolhof) outside the city. He was known as a friend of the arts. His portrait was painted by Jacques de Geyn in 1591 and by Jacob Matham in 1602. His testament was witnessed by the painter Cornelis Ketel in 1608, the year of his death. He was married to Grietge Stoffelsdr., who was buried on 24 July 1624. She apparently kept her late husband's household goods until her death. On 18 April 1619, a distribution by lots (caveling) took place of the possessions of Vincent Jacobsz. Coster. Jan Gasmae(?). horticulturist, on one side; Jan Centen (probably of INVNO 280); Daniel van Genegen (of R 20520 of Montias2) as husband and guardian of Aeltgen Centen; and Gerrit Adriaensz. Merm as husband and guardian of Susanna Centen, all children and heirs of Vincent Jacobsz. Coster for themselves and in the place of Grietgen Stoffels, widow of the late Vincent Jacobus Coster, drew lots for the division of the estate. Claes Hendricksz. and Willem Jansz. horticulturist were arbiters in this division. Various sums were exchanged to make the lots equitable. Claes Hendricksz. (probably of INVNO 1195) and Willem Jansz. horticulturist acted as arbiters. Various compensatory sums were paid to make the lots equitable (NA 200, film 111). It is not clear whether this division did not go through or whether the goods in the present sale consisted of what remained after the division. In any case, Cent Jacobsz.'s goods were sold at the request of his heirs, including Jacob Jansz. Koster, one of the buyers at the sale, who may have one of the children of Jan Vincentsz. Koster of INVNO 280 and INVNO 2800, thus a grandchild of Cent Jacobsz. On 15 June 1633, the honorable Gerrit Adriaensz. Merm named his wife Susanna Cent Jacobs Costers to indemnify Bartolt Philipsz. (of R 27378), Adriaen Cornelisz. Brederode (the father of Bredero of R 28859), Claes Hendricx Stopper (of R 20012, all of Montias2), and Hendrick Brughmans for the guarantee they had given him when he had purchased the farm on the tax on wine (NA 991, fol. 31, Not. J. Bosch).
