Commentary | The brothers Samuel and Daniel Godijn were both of South Netherlandich origin. Samuel was born in Antwerp. Their parents are tentatively identified as Jean Godin and Barbe Vivien (see also the TEXT of R 1018). They were both first noted in Amsterdam in 1602 when they invested 3000 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 96). In 1623 and 1624, Samuel Godijn, who was primarily a wool merchant, was one of the directors of the W.I.C. (Johannes de Laet, History of the W.I.C.) He paid a tax of 400 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the East side of the Keysersgracht (Kohier, fol. 187, p. 43). Johanna Godin, daughter of Samuel Godijn and Anna Anselmo Anthonijsdr., was married to Jacob Trip, a member of the famous Dordrecht family of cannon and ammunition dealers, on 14 February 1634 (Elias. Vroedschap, pp. 548-9.) Another daughter named Cecilia married Hendrick Trip (Jacob's brother) on 31 March 1633. After her death, he remarried with Ann Anselmo (R 24909 of Montias2). Samuel Godijn's inventory was taken after his death on 29 November 1633 (NA 694B, cited by W. Fock in Oud Holland, 112(1998), note 179.) On 31 October 1633, the honorable Joris van Hengel (cited in the NOTES to R 25443 of Montias2) and Jan Leschevin (probably of R 29988 of Montias2), merchants, declared that they had seen the notice written by Gonsalvo Romitti (of INVNO 302), who, besides themselves, had arbitrated the differences between the honorable Samuel and Daniel Godin, on one side, and the honorable Jacques Schot (or Scott) (cited in the NOTES to R 29995 of Montias2), who married the widow of Charles Godin (Rachel le Carlier) on 17 August 1615, on the other. The arbiters confirmed that Samuel and Daniel Godin, according to a testament (?) of 1607, were to give to each of the heirs of Charles Godin 200 pounds Vl. (NA 694B, film 4980, Not. J. Warnaerts). Rachel Godin (married to David van Baerle of INVNO 118) was the daughter of Charles Godin and of Rachel le Carlier. Charles Godin seems to have been the brother of Jean Godin, the putative father of Samuel and Daniel Godin. Charles Godin was a merchant based in Frankfort (for details, see Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, pp. 562 and 579). On 14 September 1627, Daniel Godijn notified Abraham Luls that he had sold him 50 bolts of cotton lijnwaet at the price of 10 f. 10 st. per bolt, which had not been paid for. Luls wished to avail himself of Godijn's promise that he would take the merchandise back if desired (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.P.G. 78(1933), p. 633). For further details on the Godijn family, see the TEXT of R 1018. One of the items sold in the present sale, not included in INVNO 902, was a Bible in 8 parts (no doubt illuminated), which was bought for 150 f. by Hans Walschart. | |
