Commentary | Jacob Pietersen, the father of the painter Pieter Codde (of R 32514), was paalknecht, a small municipal office which involved the collection of an excise tax levied on ships that docked near the Nieuwe Brugge. The address of the deceased (and his known date of death) clearly establish the identification. He was born about 1567 and was buried on 25 November 1624. He married Marij Jans (born about 1568) on 26 July 1592. She survived him. Their son Pieter Codde was baptized in 1599. Some of the goods that were appraised and sold at the prices set by sworn appraisers (schatsers) were bought by the son Jan Jacobsz. Kod (baptized in 1597), some by the painter Pieter Codde, and some by his daughter Claer Jacobs (baptized in 1593, married to Claes Hectors, koekebakker on the Nieuwen Dijck in de drie duijven). The painter Pieter Codde should be distinguished from Pieter Claesz. Kod, rope-maker, of INVNO 646, who was related to the poet Pieter Codde. For all these family relations, see Ch. Dozy, Pieter Codde de schilder en de dichter, Oud Holland 2(1884), pp. 44, 55, and 67. |
