Buyersolvit [crossed out: Claes Korver]
Buyer FamilyKorver (or Corver), Claes
Buyer NotesNicolaes Corver, merchant on the Heeregracht, owner of the Hofstede Beeckesteyn, was baptized on 16 July 1589, the son of Jan Jansz. Corver de jonge (1555-1632) and Nelletgen Jacobs Bas (who died in 1637). He was the brother of Dirck Corver of R 23516 and of Tietgen Corver, who married Goris de Waert (of R 7605) in 1619 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 471). He was living in the house of his father in the Calverstraet when he bought lots for 5 f. 8 st. in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (GAA 63/13 F 16). He died without issue on 8 September 1654. He was married, first, on 1 August 1622, to Claesgen Hooft (1597-1624) and, after her death, to Margrieta Bas, daughter of Oud Burgermeester Dirck Bas, and sister of alderman Elbert Bas (who signed the Remonstrant petiton of 1628) (DTB 443/390). He dealt in imported wines (and was at one time pachter of the excise tax on wine) but did not belong to the wine dealers' guild, at least as of 29 August 1624 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P.78(1933), p.506 and 544, concerning the dispute between the wine importers and the pachter of the tax on wine. See a summary of the deposition in the NOTES to R 27378). Nicolaes Corver signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. On 10 March 1636, Claes Corver and Margrita Bas ten overstaen van de Heer Schepen Albert Bas ende Elisabeth Bas had their daughter Margrietge baptized in the Remonstrant Church (DTB 301). Elisabeth Bas was the sister of Margrieta Bas (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 247.) Claes Corver became burgomaster in 1650. He paid a tax of 130 f. in 1631, at which time he was living on the Heeregracht (Kohier, fol. 85, p. 20). In 1636, he inherited money from Jan Jansz. Corver de jonge and Nelletje Bas (WK 5073/789, 8 June 1636).

BuyerJacob Codde op de Achterburgwal bij de Molsteech
Buyer FamilyCodde, Jacob (Pietersz.)
Buyer NotesThe buyer paid a tax of 72 f. in 1631, at which time he was indeed living on the N.Z. Ooster Achterburchwal, near the Molsteegh (Kohier, fol. 289 vo., p. 66.) Jacob Pietersz. Codde was born in 1589/90 and was buried on 7 May 1666 (Oud Holland 2(1884), p. 44). He was the brother of Roeloff Codde of R 7591 and of Marten Codde of R 21399. On 2 June 1616, Jacob Pietersz. Codde, 26 years old, living in the Calverstraet, assisted by his mother Marie Roelofs, was betrothed to Lysbeth Claes Hollesloot, 24, assisted by her schwagerinne Maria Jacobs (DTB 668/29). Marie Roelofs, the wife of Pieter Codden (1553-1618), was buried, coming from de drie Codden, on 3 October 1618 (Oud Holland, loc. cit.). Her daughter Anna Codde, who married Adriaen Andriess (not identical with the individual of that name of R 29031), lived in de twee Kodden in the Calverstraet. Jacob Codde, as was his brother Roeloff, was an insurer of ships (see, for example, the contract of March 1636 cited in the NOTES to R 24906). On 4 September 1646, the faillit inventory of Jacob Codden was taken (DBK 5072/353, INVNO 1022). Jacob Codde, like his brothers, was Roman Catholic (see in particular the portrait of the Marquis van Spinola in his inventory).

BuyerGabriel Marselis op de Heregracht bij 't Eijland van de Schellingh
Buyer FamilyMarsellis (Marcelis), Gabriel (II)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was Gabriel Marcelis de jonge, merchant, who bought cannon from Laurens de Geer by a contract signed on 29 October 1641 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P.144(1974), p. 322.) He was the son of Gabriel Marcellis(I), who first settled in Middelburg, then was noted in Rotterdam in 1597 and then went back and forth between Hamburg and Middelburg. He was, among things, a spiegelmaker (maker of mirrors), who imported glass from Venice toward the end of the 16th century (M. de Roever in Exh. Cat. Amsterdam: Venetien van het Noorden, 1992, p. 168.) Gabriel Marselis I was married to Anna l'Hermite, shortly before 1600. The couple had two sons: Pieter, Gabriel II, and Celis. Gabriel and Celis married two daughters of Jan Frans van der Straten (of R 27080) and Sara Meunicx (Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden 1560-1640, pp. 265-6). On 11 June 1635, Gabriel Marcelus (de jonge), from Hamburg, 27 years old, assisted by his brother Celis Marceles, living in Hamburg, was betrothed to Isabella van der Straten, from Amsterdam, 18, assisted by her mother Sara Munnicx, living in the Beemster (DTB 443/375). Straten is the spelling for various members of the family related to Sara Munnicx in the TEXT of INVNO 299. Yet, according to the following document, Sara Munnicx seems to be related to the painter Anthoni van der Stralen, who was perhaps the brother of Isabella van Stralen (or Straten). On 8 December 1637, Catelyntje van Noosten, wife of Anthoni van Stralen, painter, brought 62 f. to the Orphan Chamber on behalf of the children of Dirck Munnicx (WK 5073/789). Celis (or Celio) Marselis was a merchant in Amsterdam who purchased the brewery Het Lam in 1661 from the Flemish Wederdopers community (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 144(1974), p. 688). On 11 May 1638, Gabriel Marselis and his wife had their daughter Isabella baptized in the Remonstrant Church (DTB 301/15). Their son Gabriel was baptized in huys (by a Remonstrant domine) on 1 November 1639 (DTB 301/19). On 10 March 1636, Johan de Ruijter, assisted by Celio and Gabriel Marcellis, merchants, signed a pre-nuptial contract with Anne Marie le Comte, assisted by the honorable David le Comte, her father, Paolo (Paul) le Comte, her brother (of R 35364), and her cousin Pieter Rosseau (Rousseau) (NA 413A). In 1640, the King of Denmark Christiaen IV gave the brothers Gabriel and Celio Marselis a commission to go to Norway (which belonged at the time to Denmark) and to explore the possibilities of expanding and modernizing metal mining. This came to fruition, and the mining of copper and iron, together with the manufacture of cannons, was rapidly developed (Van Dillen, Van rijkdom en regenten, p. 318). Pieter Marselis, the brother of Gabriel and Celio, conducted trade with Russia, also in metal products (Van Dillen, op.cit. p. 319 and Wijnroks, op.cit., pp. 266 and 352).

Buyeridem [Reijnier Paeuw in 't Blaeu Huys]
Buyer FamilyPaeuw, Reynier
Buyer NotesThere are several individuals with the name of Reijnier Paeuw who were alive in 1637. But the most likely is Reynier Adriaensz. Pauw, knight (ridder), 1612-1652, heer van Nieuwekerck and of Vijfhuisen. He was the son of Adriaen Pauw , ridder, heer van Heemstede, Bennebroeck etc.. (1585-1653). He married Adriana Jonckheijn on 3 August 1632 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 193). She was the daughter of Elbert Symonsz. Jonckheijn and of Adriana Coolen who, on 22 September 1620, had remarried with Hans Rombouts, the owner of the Blaeuw Huys on the Warmoesgracht (ibid., p. 308). It is presumed that Reynier Paeuw had acquired the house via his marriage to Adriana Jonckheijn in 1632. Reijnier Paeuw was a very wealthy investor in Amsterdam businesses. His turnover at the Wisselbank in 1645 amounted to 145,000 f. (Elias, ibid.) He is not listed in the 1631 tax kohier, probably because he was still too young and had not established a separate household.
