Buyer Notes | The buyer, Gerrit van Rijssen, was a jeweler. On 4 May 1621, Gerard van Rijssen, from Utrecht, 30 years old, no living parents, living in Utrecht, was betrothed to Christine van Meerlen, 20, assisted by her father Hans van Meerlen and her mother Maria Gysbrechs van Ghils, living in Amsterdam, in the Nieuwe Hoochstraet (DTB 26/65). On 29 June 1634, the couple had their son Theodorus baptized in the Remonstrant Church (DTB 301). In a deposition with the jewelers David ter Haer (of R 18944) and Jan van Mansdalen of 21 November 1635, Gerrit van Rijssen testified about the quality of diamonds and other jewels that had been shown to them by the widow of Jean le Roux. They opined that the jewels should not be sold at auction or otherwise if the highest prices were to be obtained. The mountings of the diamonds were so old and shabby that the perfection of the diamonds was no longer apparent (NA 412B, Not. Jacob and Nicolas Jacobsz., cited in Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P.144(1974), p. 98). (Van Dillen wrote the name Gevaert van Rijssen, an error for Gerart in the original). Eight years later, on 30 October 1643, Jan van Mansdaele, silversmith, declared at the request of Bertranne Boursse, widow of Jean le Roux, that he had inspected some jewels at her house, being diamond and gold mounted in the old fashion, and that he had taken out the stones and the gold. After melting the gold, 20 ounces were left, which he had bought for 32 f. (ibid, p.388). On Bertranne Boursse, see the NOTES to R 20074. Jan van Mansdalen was probably a close relative of David van Mansdalen who was betrothed to Christina van Maerle's sister Constantia on 20 April 1638 DTB 448/271). Gerrit van Rijssen appeared on this occasion as her swager. He signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. He and his wife Christina baptized their son Theodorus in the Remonstrant Church on 19 June 1636 and their son Geraert on 21 March 1637 (DTB 301). David van Mansdalen (or Mansdael) I, who was perhaps the father of David van Mansdael II who married Constantia van Maerlen of R 8149, bought lots in the lottery of 1606 (123 F 902). Gerrit van Rijssen died on 25 November 1659, at the age of 70 (68 according to the betrothal act above). Christina van Maerle died on 20 February 1659 and was buried six days later (De Navorscher 84(1935), p. 39 and DTB 1047/168). |

Buyer Notes | On 20 November 1636, Adriaen ter Haer, goldsmith, from Amsterdam, 23 years old, assisted by his father Cornelis ter Haer, living in the Brestraet, was betrothed to Agniet Collet, assisted by her neve Saerte Nooms (DTB 445/288). He was living inthe Calverstraet when he remarried with Sara de Barri, 36 years old, on 6 January 1639. She was assisted by Pieter de Bary, who was married to Sara de Marees (II), the daughter of Abraham de Marees I of INVNO 300 (DTB 450/34). On 3 September 1646, Aderiaen ter Haer and Sara de Brae (Barr, Bary) had their son Aderiaen baptized in the Wa.K. in the presence of Matadis Hals and Severyn ter Haer (DTB 65/24) Adriaen ter Haer was apparently the nephew of David ter Haer of R 18944 and of Abraham ter Haer of R 21046. The sister of Sara de Bary, named Maria, assisted by her father Pieter de Bary, was betrothed to Mathys Cornelissen Hals, vergulder, assisted by Eleaser Swalmius, on 25 October 1635 (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 147). Later, Mathijs Hals became an art dealer. Mathijs Hals is presumed to be identical with Matadis Hals, who witnessed the baptism of Aderiaen ter Haert II in 1646. On the death inventory of Mathijs Hals, see INVNO 411. In 1640, Adriaen ter Haer, goldsmith, acquired the soft-boiling works De Twee Croonen (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 83(1991), p.65). His death date is not known. Neither is it known whether Sara de Bary, married to the printmaker Rombout van der (den) Hoeye II, whose inventory was taken on 12 December 1662, and which contained many maps and prints, is the same person who was earlier married to Adriaen ter Haer (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, pp. 536-540). The printmaker may be the son of the spices merchant Rombout van der Hoeye (II), cited in a document dated 1614 in the NOTES to R 29628. Pieter de Bary may have been a jeweler. In a sale of 27 January 1607 (INVNO 725), the painter Pouwels de Vrie bought a diamond and turquoise ring for 30 f. His guarantor (borg) was Pieter de Bari in the Warmoesstraet next to Jan van Dijck. |

Buyer Notes | The buyer was a goldsmith, silversmith, and diamond merchant. On 23 January 1616, David ter Haer, from Ypses (Ipswich ? Ypres ?) goldsmith, 30 years old, living in the Gravestraet, was betrothed to Catalijntje Francen (signs Frans), from Haarlem, assisted by her father Franchoijs Willemsz. (DTB 668/2). Franchoijs Willemsz. seems to be identical with the individual of that name who was a printer on linen (deposition of 19 December 1612 transcribed in Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 20). David ter Haer, the brother of Abraham ter Haer of R 21046 and the uncle of Adriaen ter Haer of R 18943, may be identical with Daniel ter Haer (through an error in transcription) who was said to have bought for 2156 f. of blood-red coral on 26 September 1639 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p.240). David ter Haer died before 6 March 1643, when his widow remarried with Dirck Jansz. Emrick (DTB 677/86). In 1628, David ter Haer bought an agathe stone with four diamonds from Andries Oliva (Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 646.) He paid a tax of 25 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the O.Z. Voorburgwal (Kohier, p. 56, fol. 244vo). On 30 June 1634, he signed, as David Cornelisz. ter Haer, an agreement that his brother Abraham ter Haer had come to with a silversmith named Pieter Adriaensz. (cited in the NOTES to R 21046). On 21 November 1635, David ter Haer and Jan van Mansdalen, and Gerard van Rijssen (of R 18924) testified that the jewels that had been shown to them by the widow of Jean le Roux (a rose with diamonds etc..) were old-fashioned and should not be sold at auction if the highest prices were to be obtained. It would be better to sell the stones separately as well as the gold on the stock market (op de boursse) (NA 412B, Not. Jacob and Nicolas Jacobsz.) On 15 September 1636, David ter Haer, jeweler, 51, declared at the request of Agnetjen Hessels that some time ago she, Agnetjen, had come to his house to sell a pair of gold bracelets. The price agreed on was 35 f. an ounce. The bracelets weighed about three ounces, and he paid her f. 111: 2: 8 (NA 991, fol. 189, Not. J. Bosch). On 16 November 1640, he declared that some stones that had been sold to a merchant were granats and not rubies (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 144(1974), p. 281). |

Buyer Notes | Joachim Wicquefort, the son of Jasper Wicquevoort de oude and the brother of Jasper van Wicquevoort de jonge of R 8194, was born about 1600. He came to Amsterdam with his father Jasper Jansz. when he was still young. His younger brother Abraham wrote the Histoire des Provinces Unies des Pays-Bas. Joachem van Wicquefort was a banker, a merchant and a diplomatic agent for Bernard von Saxen-Weimar. He was married to Anne Bosschaert (1601-1649), who should not be confused with Anne Boschert of R 27688, the wife of Jacques Boon. Joachim Vickevoort's wife, Anne Boschert or Bosschaert, was the daughter of Arent (alias Arnout) van Erp and Gertruyd Willems. Arnout van Erp (1553-1618) was a merchant and copper dealer, born in 's Hertogenbosch, who lived in Antwerp before migrating to Haarlem and Amsterdam, where he is first noted in 1583 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base and Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 300). Anne Bosschaert was related to Constantijn Huygens, with whom Joachem corresponded. Joachem was a lover of the arts, a collector of naturalia, shells, and paintings (J. van der Veen in Wereld binnen handbereik, p. 331). He was a friend of the poet Caspar van Baerle with whom he carried on an intensive correspondence in Latin in the 1630's (Oud Holland, 5(1887), pp. 103, 113, 118). He was also on friendly relations with Michel le Blon (of R 21700), the poet and historian P.C. Hooft, and Joost Back (the son of Louris Joosten Baeck of R 28932), the husband of Magdalena van Erp and thus his brother-in-law (Van de Veen, ibid.). Finally, he was on very friendly terms with Joost van den Vondel, who, in 1640, dedicated his play, Jozef in Dothan, to Joachim van Wickevoort, Ridder, Raat en Resident van haar Hoogheid van Hessen. Vondel had apparently become acquainted with Vickevoort in the house of P.C. Hooft, perhaps in his famous Muiden castle (A. M. Verstraten, Studien over Vondel en zijn Jozef in Dothan, Gent, 1886, p. 97). In a letter to W. Geleijnsz., commanding a fleet of V.O.C. ships, dated 4 December 1634, Joachim van Wickevoort appended an aide-memoire in which he listed the East Indian goods that it would be most desirable to import to Holland. These included schoone curieuse schilderijkens (beautiful, curious little paintings) (Oud Holland 33(1915), p. 33). In 1631, Jochum van Vickevoort, living on the corner of the Papenbruchsteech, paid a tax of 180 f. (Kohier, fol. 139, p. 32). He died in 1670. |

Buyer Notes | On 8 November 1636, Annetge Jeuriaens Spoor, living in Utrecht, who was probably the daughter of Jeuriaen Pietersz. Spoor, a possible buyer for the lot of R 30469, made a declaration concerning jewels that had been deposited and apparently consigned for sale with Tomas de Kemel (NA 595B, film 4981). Three days later, on November 11, Hendrick de Goyer, rentmaster of the Heer van Heemstede (Adriaen Pauw), and Willem van Hemert stated that they had gone to the house of Sr. de Kemel, jeweler, living on the Breestraet near the St. Anthonispoort, on the East side, and there had shown Kemel a brooch with 9 large and 6 small diamonds, which had been made on the order of Anne van Lockhorst, lady of Benne Broeck. The stones were set in an old brooch. Kemel was given the order to reset the stones in a new brooch which would have to be ready for the wedding of Elisabeth van Alteren, daughter of the lord of Jaersvelt. Kemel had reset the brooch in time for the wedding of Juffr. van Alteren, who had delivered it in the hands of Cornelia Pau, daughter of the lord of Achtienhoven in order to be handed over to Mevrouw Beenbroeck (NA 843, fol. 1381, Not. Hoogeboom). Anna van Lockhorst (b. 1614) was the wife of Claes Seys de jonge, otherwise known as Nicolaes Seys Pauw, knight, lord of Bennebroeck and Oosterwijck (1607-1640), the son of Adriaen Pauw (1585-1653) and of Anna Seys (1583-1607). Elisabeth van Alteren (1613-1639), daughter of Lodewijck van Alteren, lord of Jaarsveld (1608-1657), married Cornelis van der Nisse, lord of Heinkenszand, etc.. on 2 October 1635 (this was presumably the wedding referred to in the document). The inventory of the painter Pieter Quast was drawn up on 17 December 1632 at the request of Simon Lodewijcksz. van Alteren, the father of Lodewick van Alteren (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 18). The lord of Achttienhoven was Michiel Pauw (1590-1640) (of R 34143). His daughter Cornelia Pauw (1617-1641) married Adam van Lockhorst, lord of de Lier, on 8 December 1616 (Elias, Vroedschap, pp. 193, 432 and 196, resp.) On 15 April 1637, Anna van Hagen, widow of Henrick Swart declared that her house on the Breestraet near St. Anthonispoort, rented for 270 f. a year in 1628 as can be shown by the rental schedule (huijrcedulle) signed by Thomas de Kemel for 1628 to 1630. Anna van Hagen had presumably acquired the house from de Kemel (NA 991, fol. 130, Not. J. Bosch). On 5 September 1637. Thomas de Kemel, jeweler in Amsterdam, declared that he had wrongly suspected the brothers Pieter and Jan Coenen of the theft of a diamond ring worth 500 to 600 f., which he had found again in his papers (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p. 169). On 20 March 1640, Kemel was said to be 40 years old, when he made a deposition, together with Diego Ferdinandus de Paes, diamond cutter, at the request of sr. Lopes Ramires concerning a diamond which De Paes had entrusted to him 8 years previously for cutting and polishing (ibid. p. 262). On 14 August 1643, Thomas de Kemel, jeweler, from Amsterdam, 43 years old, assisted by his sister Annetje de Kegel (sic), living on the Coninxgracht, was betrothed to Catharijne Breijel, from Antwerp, widow of Pieter Voet, living on the Breestraet (DTB 459/365). Pieter Voet, born in 1583/4 had been a diamond cutter (NA 694B, Not. J. Warnaerts, deposition of Pieter Voet at request of Joan Rulants, dated 7 June 1634 and Van Dillen, ibid., p. 78, act dated 12 January 1635). Annetje de Kegel (alias Kemel) may possibly be identical with Jannetje de Kemel, who married Andries Pitte(n) in 1636 (R 21344). Catharijne Breijel is likely to be related to Jacques de Breijel, from Antwerp, who sold marble statues at auction in Amsterdam on 13 September 1646. Thomas de Kemel bought for 51 f. at the sale (Denuce, Na Pieter Paul Rubens, p. 56). On 25 August 1648, Tomaso de Kemel, merchant-jeweler, named a merchant in Hamburg to represent him to obtain payment for jewels and diamonds that were delivered to him (Van Dillen, op.cit. 144(1974), p. 515). On 26 November 1660, Joan Wils from Haarlem and living there, merchant, 30, assisted by Niclaes Berchem, his brother-in-law, was betrothed to Maria Vingboons, from Amsterdam, widow of Thomas de Kemel (Bredius, Künstler-inventare p. 293 of Nachträge). Joan Wils, baptized on 4 May 1629, was the son of the painter Jan Wils. The family relation between Maria Vingboons and the painter David Vinckeboons has not been ascertained. |

Buyer Notes | The buyer, Maria van Maerlen, was the daughter of Jan van Maerlen. She was baptized on 30 September 1604, in the presence of IJsack Cornelis, Abraham de Petteijn, and Maijken Bulsinck van der Pettein (DTB 4/102). On 9 December 1637, Otto van Lange, accompanied by Jan Danckwert, his brother-in-law, signed a pre-nuptial contract with Maria van Merle, assisted by Gerrit van Rijssen (of R 18924) and his wife Christina van Merle, Hans van Solt (II) (of R 21567), and Agatha van Merle, her brothers-in-law and sisters respectively. Maria agreed to convert to the Reformed Religion (from Lutheranism) and to bring up any children she might have with Otto van Lange in the Reformed religion. He set up a dowry of 3,000 f. for her and she a dowry of 1,500 f. for him (NA 988, act 10, Not. J. Bosch). On 30 May 1638, Gerrit van Rijssen, Christina van Maerlen, Hans van Soldt and Agatha van Maerlen signed a deposition in which they asserted that, on the evening of Maria van Maerlen's marriage to Otto van (de) Lange, the brother-in-law of De Lange, named Jan Danckwaert, from Hamburg, appeared in the house where Jan van Maerlen (Maria's father) had died, and declared that he was ready to donate 2,000 rijcksdaelders (5,000 f.) to the marriage, which was the sum his (Danckwaert's ?) sister had received when she got married. Asked what guarantee he could give for this donation, he answered, Our money will be our guarantee. He had apparently made this promise on behalf of his mother, who was absent because she had a bad leg. On 28 July 1638, Maria van Maerlen, armed with a power-of-attorney from her husband, named Abraham Anthonisz. Recht (of R 20033), to represent her in court to obtain the 2,000 rijksdaelders that had been promised verbally by Danckwaert's parents (NA 991, fol. 3 and foll., Not. J. Steyn). |

Buyer Notes | The buyer may have been the grandson of Balthasar van de Perre I who already had a daughter named Magdalena when the inventory of the late Maria van de Perre was drawn up in Antwerp on 14 May 1603 (Duverger, Antwerpse kunstinventarissen 1(1984) p. 94). This individual, who was said to be a bookkeeper, also witnessed the inventory, drawn up in Antwerp on 6 February 1606, of Jaspar van der Gouwe, widower of Jacomina van de Perre (ibid. p.124). Balthasar van de Perre II was the son of Roelandt van de Perre and of Anna Lamberti, who settled in Amsterdam about 1615. He was the brother of Melchior van de Perre (II) and of Margrita van de Perre who married, first, Hans Karreman, and, second the notary Nicolaes Jacobsz. of R 8189. On 2 August 1619, Melchior van de Perre, merchant's employee (coopgesel), working for his own account, and his sister Margriete van de Perre, widow of Hans Carreman (or Caerman), named their father Roelandt van de Perre, to collect their inheritance from the late Melchior van de Perre (I) and Margriete Jacobs, their grandfather and grandmother (NA 382, fol. 42). Some time before 22 December 1633 when the couple passed their first testament. Balthasar van de Perre, from IJsselstein, was married to Barbara Mirou. The bride was the daughter of the goldsmith Hendrick Mirou, who was apparently the brother of the Flemish painter Anton Mirou of Frankenthal. Her mother was Hester van Berck. He was a bookkeeper of the V.O.C., whose headquarters (the Ost Indienhuys) were located very near his house on the Hoogestraet (I. van Eeghen, De familiestukken van Metsu van 1657 en van de Witte van 1678 ... Jaarboek Amstelodamum 68(1976), p. 96.) On 24 June 1638, Balthes van de Parre and Barbera Mirous had their child Machtelina baptized in the church. The witnesses were Juffr. Hester van Berck (the grandmother), Juffr. Catharina Thijs, and Monsieur Daniel van Beeringh (Beringen) (cited in the NOTES to R 20584 (DTB 7/173). Catharina Thijs, who was married to Samuel van Swol (of R 8150), was the sister of Christoffel Thijsz. mentioned below. Daniel van Beringh (or Beringen) was married to Machtelina Mirou in 1631. He was born about 1606 (NA 694B, Not. J. Warnaerts). Machtelina Mirou was presumably the sister of Barbara Mirou. Hester Mirou, another sister of Barbara Mirou, lived in IJselstyn. On 6 August 1636, Sr. Balthasar van de Perre and his wife Barbara Mirou, together with Hester Mirou, living in Ysselstyn agreed to sell a house in IJselstyn belonging to Hendrick Mirou their father (NA 991, fol. 51, Not. J. Bosch). According to Isabella van Eeghen, Balthes van de Perre lived in no. 2 of the Nieuwe Hoogstraet, which was indeed next door to no. 4 where the house of Jan van Maerlen was situated. On 19 October 1640, Balthasar van de Perre and Barbara Mirou passed their third testament. They named Hendrick Mirou (Barbara's father) and Daniel van Beringen as guardians over their children in case of their death. If the children were themselves to die, Daniel van Beringen would inherit. Born about 1606, he was said to be a drogist in 1634 (NA 694B, Not. J. Warnaerts, 23 February 1634). Philips de Bacher was the brother of Samuel de Bacher and of Hedwige de Bacher, the wife of Francoijs Thijsz., who in turn was the brother of Hans Thijsz. de oude of INVNO 690. He was a partner with Cornelis and Nicolaes van Bambeeck (II) (whose sister Maria van Bambeeck he married in 1617) in their wool business (Elias, Vroedschap, p, 649). About 1604, he was apprenticed to Pieter van Geel (of R 31692) to learn the cloth-dealing business when he was 21 years old. On 20 August 1633, Trijntge Hendricx, widow of Hendrick Lemssen van Tongeren, had notary Baddel insinuate Sr. Philips de Bacher, merchant, and, in his absence, spoke to the maid. concerning two large paintings and the twelve sybils that he had bought from the widow, had received, and had kept a month and, now, under a frivolous pretext, no longer wished to keep (NA 947, Not. B. Baddel). Trijntge Hendricx later married Captain Robol of R 27015. Christoffel Thijsz., baptized on 30 September 1603, was the son of the afore-named Francois Thijs (I) and of Hedwige de Bacher. He was co-owner of the house on the Breestraat sold to Rembrandt in 1639 and played an important role in the artist's life (in 1653, for example, he dunned Rembrandt for the latter's debt on his house) (for details, see I. van Eeghen, op.cit. sup., pp. 97-8)). The following pre-marital contract cites the children and children-in-law of Balthasar van de Perre. On 23 February 1639, Bonaventuer Broen, cited in the NOTES to R 21230, assisted by his nephew Henrick Broen (of R 7618), Jean le Thoor de jonge (the son of Hans le Thoor I of R 20997), and his good acquaintance Marcus van Valckenburch (of INVN0 1238) signed a pre-nuptial contract with the intended bride Susanna van de Perre, assisted by her brothers Dirck and Johan van de Perre (all children of Balthasar van de Perre) and her (future) brother-in-law Daniel de Vogelaer (married to Susanna van de Perre, likewise a daughter of Balthasar van de Perre) (NA 419A, fol. 243, Notaries Jacob and Nicholaes Jacobsz.) Johannes van de Perre was said to be 30 years old in a deposition dated 15 January 1639 (cited in the NOTES to R 20311). On 9 March 1640, Bonaventura Broen was said to be doing business in Brazil with Marcus van Valckenburg and Symon van der Does (of R 28462) (NA 421, film 6438). |

Buyer Notes | On 6 April 1639, Outgert Claesz. and Pieter Outgert, merchants, insinuated Maerten van Heuvel concerning the protracted delivery of gilded leather (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 144(1974), p.225). On 11 November 1639, Pieter Outgert signed a contract with Jean Barbe to exploit mineral alum in Denmark (Van Dillen, op.cit. pp. 247-9). Outgert Claesz. seems to have been the brother of Pieter Outgert (Niclaessoon). Pieter Outgert signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628, as did Marten van Heuvel. Together with Outgert Claesz., he represented Jan de Wouwer (of R 23231), living in Hamburg in 1640 (procuration dated 2 April 1640, NA 421). Outgert Claesz. sold a house by procuration in Campen on 24 December 1636 (NA 414A, fol. 563). On 19 June 1638, Outger Claesz., merchant, as husband of Helena van Buren, acknoledged for him and his heirs that the honorable Anna Floris van de Nieupoort, his stepmother, had transferred to him, to his full satisfaction, all the goods accruing to his wife from the inheritance from his father of Hendrick van Buren and as a result of the death of their brothers and sisters. He thanked his stepmother for the transfer (NA 1498). On 10 September 1647, Outgert Claesz., married to Helena van Buijren, and Helena van Buijren named Adriaen van Tol, notary in The Hague, to sell 12 morgen 5 hond and 10 roe of land in Monster ambacht, which they had inherited from Hester van Buijren, widow and custodian of the estate of Pieter Outgers to Anna van Nieupoort, widow of Hendrick van Buijren, silk cloth dealer, and Hendrick van Buijren, advocate before the Court of Holland, their mother and brother respectively (ONA 6037 # 1050, as kindly communicated by Gerard Eendenburg, as were the following documents). On 3 April 1648, Outgert Claesz. and Helena van Buijren sold a little more than 4 morgen of pasture land to the guardians of Joncker Aelbert Snouckaert, son of Martin Snoekaert (RA Monster 25 # 5240 fol. 220v). On 9 May 1648, Outgert Claesz., merchant in Amsterdam, for himself and his wife, sold various pieces of land which they had inherited from Hendrick van Buijren, father of Helena van Buijren, to Cornelis Musch, ridder, etc. for f. 1980: 6:-- (RA Monster 25 # 5243). Buyer Notes | Arent Dircksz. Bosch was a successful ironmonger. On 18 March 1603, Arent Dircksz. Bos (signs Bosch), from Gouda, 22 years old, living in Gouda, was betrothed to Lysbeth Jansdr. de Vogel, assisted by her uncle Cornelis Albertsz. (DTB 665/262). Lysbeth Jans, born in Amsterdam about 1583, was the daughter of Jan de Vogel of R 26637. She was buried in her native city on 11 October 1647 (Nederlandsche Leeuw 81(1964), col. 336). Arent Bos was still living in Gouda on 3 June 1603 when he freighted a ship to Riga with Adriaen Jacobsen van Leeuwarden (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel, R.G.P. 184(1983), p. 138). He later lived in Munster. He freighted 19 ships between 1617 and 1619 (Winkelman, Bronnen ... 186(1983), p. 775). As a grain merchant, he signed a petition to the city magistrates on November 2, 1621 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 420). In 1627, he was one of 27 aalmoezeniers (provisioners for the poor) who signed a petition concerning the collection of a levy on grain to benefit the poor (Maandblad Amstelodamum 74(1987), p. 87). By the testament of Clementia van den Vondel (the sister of the poet Joost van den Vondel), dated 11 April 1628, Arent Dircksz. Bos was named co-guardian (with Gilbert de Flines IV and Frans Wolphertsz. van den Berch) of her children (J.F.M. Sterk, Oorkonden over Vondel en zijn kring, Bussum, 1918, p. 321). Gilbert de Flines IV was the husband of Clementia's daughter Rebecca de Wolf. In 1631, Arent Dircksz. was taxed 150 f, at which time he lived on the Hoeck op de Waal (Kohier, fol. 117). In February 1645, he signed a petition to the Vroedschap calling for the enforcement of currency regulations issued in 1622 (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken 59(1925), p. 90). On 16 January 1649, he bought a lot on the Brouwersgracht (no. 240) on which he built a warehouse in 1656 (he was then 75 years old) (Maandblad Amstelodamum 65(1978), p, 138). On 7 September 1649, Arent Dirckse Bos signed a petition, along with seven soap boilers and nine dealers in ashes (importers of potash), calling for stricter restrictions on the weight of containers of imported ash from Riga (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p. 537). He was buried in the O.K. in 1658 (Maandblad Amstelodamum 74(1987), p. 87). His son, Dirck Arentsz. Bosch, born in 1615 in Amsterdam, engaged as still a young man (22 years old) in the tulip trade (see the NOTES to R 23594). He married Lysbeth Anslo, the daughter of Joost Claesz. Anslo and of Niesje Lamberts (the sister of Heyltje Lamberts Schouten, the wife of Gilbert de Flines of INVNO 446) on 11 January 1637. He was buried in Amsterdam on 16 September 1664 (Dudok van Heel in Jaarboek C.B.G. 35(1981), p. 100). His daughter Elisabeth Bosch married Philips Rutgers (1631-1701), the son of David Rutgers and Susanna de Flines (1607-1677) (I. van Eeghen in Jaarboek Amstelodamum 67(1975), p. 175). Another daughter, named Marretje Arents (1613-1662), married Joris Sijen Pietersz. (1614-1666) in 1636. Joris Sijen and Marretje Arents Bosch may have owned portraits of their parents Pieter Sijen (c. 1592-1652) and Marretje Cornelis Grotewael (1593-1666) by Rembrandt, painted, respectively, in 1633 and 1634 (J. van der Veen, Onbekende opdrachtgevers van Rembrandt (3) in Kroniek Het Rembrandthuis 1-2(2003), p.49). Elisabeth Sijen, the daughter of Joris Sijen and Marretje Arents Bosch, married Lodewijck van Erpecum, cited in the NOTES to R 20021. The name of Adriaen Jansz. also appears next to that of Claes Jansz. in the list of lumber dealers who contracted with the municipality of Amsterdam regarding the setting up of the sawing mills (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 717). On 5 May 1637, Ariaen Sybrantsz., auction master (vendue meester), 69, Wynant Gerritsz., sawyer, 30, and Poulus Helmer, book keeper of the company of sawing mills (compagnie van de sagmolens) made a declaration about lumber at the request of Claes Jansz., lumber dealer in't gulden cantoor (the same address he gave as buyer of the present lot) (NA 597, fol. 201, Not. Buyer Notes | The buyer was the daughter of Hans or Jan van Maerle, the jeweler whose goods were sold at auction. Jan van Maerle paid a tax of 135 f. at which time he was living on the Nieuwe Hoochstraet (Kohier, p. 50, fol 220). Constantia was baptized in Amsterdam on 8 April 1607 (DTB 4/198). On 3 September 1637, she declared, along with her sisters Christina, and Lucretia (of R 8195), that even though their sister Agatha, married to Hans van Solt II of R 21567, had repudiated her share of the inheritance (from their father), they were willing to cede Agatha's portion to her children (NA 991, fol. 65, Not. J. Bosch). On 16 March 1638, David van Mansdale, accompanied by the honorable Mathijs Denijs, his uncle, and Jan van Mansdale, his nephew, signed a pre-nuptial contract with Constantia van Merle, assisted by Gerard van Rijssen (of R 18924) and Hans van Solt, her brother-in-law and by her sisters Christina and Agatha van Merle (NA 988, act 17, Not. J. Bosch). Constantia was betrothed to the jeweler Davidt Mansdael (27 years old) on 20 April 1638 (DTB 448/271). He may have been the son of David van Mansdael I who bought lots in the 1606 lottery (123 F 902). Constantia was buried on 31 November 1663 (DTB 1047/106.) She was apparently the goddaughter of Constantia van Merlen, the daughter of Jonas van Maerle (of R 30517) and Catharina van Conincxloo, who died in Antwerp, unmarried (perhaps a Roman Catholic lay sister), in 1651. In her testament Constantia van Merlen left her goddaughter illuminated images from her atelier valued at 50 f. (Duverger, Antwerpse kunstinventarissen 7(1993), p. 119). It is not clear whether the retail merchant David Mansdael who made an agreement with Everwijn Santfoort, plumassier, regarding the renting of a house on the Vijgendam on 30 January 1636, is identical with the jeweler. He may have been a cousin (NA 848, film 572, Not. J. Steyns). |

Buyer Notes | On 22 January 1622, Jan, Catharina, and Samuel van Swol were invited to the wedding of Bernard de Moor and Clara van Capelle. They all lived on the Achterburchwal in de Keyser (Nederlandse Leeuw 44(1926), col.9). Jan van Swol, the father of Samuel van Swol, was a fiery Counter-Remonstrant, who, in the early 1620s, reproached the Church Council for its excessive leniency against the Remonstrants (Evenhuis, Ook dat was Amsterdam, vol.1, p.259). He is probably identical with Hans van Swol, living on the West side of the O.Z. Voorburchwal, who paid a tax of 45 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 34, p. 9). On 21 October 1632, Samuel van Swol, from Amsterdam, bookkeeper (boeckhouder), 27 years old, assisted by his father Jan van Swoll, living in the Spinsteech, was betrothed to Catherina Thijs, 25 (DTB 439/474). This Catherina Thijs should be distinguished from the woman of the same name who married Constantinus l'Empereur d'Oppick on 19 June 1628. The wife of l'Empereur, who was born in Dantzig in 1589, was the daughter of Hans Thijsz. de oude of INVNO 690. Catherina Thijs, the wife of Samuel van Swol, who was born about about 1607, was the daughter of Hans Thijsz.'s brother Francoijs Thijsz. (I). She was the sister of Christoffel Thijsz. On 28 July 1633, Samuel van Swol and Catherijna Thijs had their son Joannis baptized in the presence of Samuel Bacher and Magdalena Thijsdr. in the O.K. (DTB 6/374). By 2 August 1639, when their daughter Catrina was baptized in the same church, the father was said to be deceased (DTB 7/218). He had been buried on 21 February 1639 in the Wester Kerk (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 398). For his death inventory of April 1639, see INVNO 408 and the TEXT of R 308 of Montias1. Magdalena Thijsdr. was the niece of Hans Thijsz. de oude. Samuel de Bacher was the son of Andries de Bacher and the brother of Philips de Bacher (on whom, see the NOTES to R 8218). Samuel de Bacher was also a witness to the baptism of a child of Christoffel Thijsz. and Magdalena Beltens on 25 October 1637 (DTB 42/49). Christoffel Thijsz. and his brother-in-law Pieter Belten (de jonge) sold Rembrandt the house on the St. Anthoniebreestraet in which the artist was to live for many years (Strauss, Rembrandt Documents, p. 159). After the death of Samuel van Swol, Catharina Thijs remarried with Dr. Allard Cloeck (1588-1645) on 2 December 1642. Nanning Cloeck (1643-1702), who became schout of Amsterdam in 1672, was the son of Dr. Allard Cloeck, commissaris van de Monstering in Amsterdam in 1631, overman of the Voetboogdoelen, and of Catharina Thijs (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 578). On 10 December 1654, Christoffel Thijsz. transferred a debt that Rembrandt owed him to his nephew Nanning Cloeck (Strauss, Rembrandt Documents, p. 327). |

Buyer Notes | Cornelis Bicker was baptized in the O.K. in Amsterdam on 25 October 1592 and died on 15 September 1654. He was lord of Swieten. As a merchant, he was associated with Jacob Romboutsz. and Jan de Marez (de jonge) (of R 27426), and was a director of the West Indische Compagnie since 1622. He was fairly wealthy (paying 250 f. tax in 1631). He also invested in trading partnerships with his brothers Jan and Andries Bicker and with Geurt Dircksz. van Beuningen (of R 23334) (Van Dillen, Van rijkdom en regenten, 1970, p.324). He became schout in 1622, master of the Orphan Chamber in 1636 and burgomaster in 1646 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 175 and Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 380). On 31 July 1617, Cornelis Bicker was betrothed to Aertge Witsen, the daughter of burgomaster Gerrit Jacob Witsen and Grietge Appelman (DTB 432/274). She was baptized in the O.K. on 23 June 1599 and buried on 9 November 1652 (Elias, ibid.) In 1654, the year of his death, Cornelis Bicker was portrayed by Govaert Flinck in a portrait preserved in Amsterdam's Historisch Museum (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, p. 120-1). Maria Bicker van Swieten, the daughter of Cornelis Bicker and of Aertge Witsen, was betrothed to Gerbrand Ornea, a rich iron dealer on the Heerengracht, on 8 June 1651. Maria Bicker was buried on 11 February 1653 (Elias, op.cit. p.160). (Jacques) Specx, whose name as a buyer was crossed out (and occurs nowhere else as a buyer of works of art), was a very rich merchant and director of the V.O.C. He lived from 1589 to 1652. He married Maria Odilia Buys in 1628 and remarried after her death (after 1651). His death inventory of 13 January 1653 included several paintings by Rembrandt (Strauss, Rembrandt Documents, p. 297). It appears from a document dated 31 August 1615, that Jacques Specx named Joannes Specx and a daughter Maria Specx who married Bartolomeus Jacobsz. de Gruyter (NA 1114, fol. 269-275). |

Buyer Notes | On 27 January 1644, Abraham Velters, from Calis in France, merchant, 41, assisted by his uncle Pieter Guatuijts (?), was betrothed to Helena de Hase (signs Haes), assisted by her father Jeronimus de Haes, living on the Heregracht (DTB 460/218). Helena de Haze, born 27 August 1621, was the daughter of Jeronimus de Haze (de oude) (of R 29604) and of Helena van Juchteren (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 669). Abraham Velters, who was said to be an outstanding merchant with dealings in France and Spain, was very wealthy. His collection, in his house in the Keysersgracht, included one painting by Rembrandt and 5 by Rubens (Elias, Vroedschap, loc. cit.) On 11 April 1636, Abraham Velters, together with 30 other merchants, testified to the credit-worthiness of the merchant Adriaen van Ackerlaeck (NA 695A, film 4821). On 25 February 1638, Ceser de Hase, 25, declared at the request of Abraham Velters, merchant, that he had bought an insurance policy from his father and had shown it to [the insurers] Cornelis and Balthasar Hermansz., Hans Schepel, Roeloff Codde (of R 7591), and Mathijs Coenen, whereby Marten Nuyts wished to insure goods worth 1,400 f. shipped from Vlissinge to Calais, but that the above-named insurers had refused to honor the policy (NA 696A, film 4982). On 25 March 1638, Marten Nuijts, merchant, insinuated Abraham Velters, merchant, who had insured some goods that had been transported from Vlissing to Calais. The goods had been lost in the two ships, and Nuijts now demanded payment for his losses (Not. J. Jacobs, NA 413, film 6434). Marten Nuyts, on 15 December 1637, had bought a house on the East side of the Coningsgracht near the Apple Market from the painter Jan Jansz. Uyl, where the latter had been living, for 3,750 f. The house of Otto de Hart (of R 36384) bordered the house of Den Uyl to the North (NA 695B, film 4982, Not. J. Warnaerts). Abraham Velters died in Amsterdam on 30 September 1690 (Elias, loc. cit.) In the post-mortem inventory of Jan Lievens, a portrait of Velters was recorded, probably by Lievens, which was probably that of Abraham Velters. It was only evaluated at 4 f. (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 188). |

On 28 October 1626, Nicolas Jacobsz., notary public, declared before the Orphan Chamber that his two sons Joost, 20, and Jan, 16, were entitled to 2000 f. from the inheritance of their mother Margriet van Blyenburch (WK 5073/789). Nicolaes Jacobsz. notaris paid a tax of 20 f. in 1631, at which time he lived, as he still did in 1637, in the Pijlsteech (Kohier, fol. 214, p. 49). Nicolaes Jacobsz. was already a widower when he married Margarita van de Perre, widow of Hans Karreman, in 1626. He died in 1632 (I. van Eegen, De familiestukken van Metsu van 1657 en van de Witte van 1678 ... Jaarboek Amstelodamum 68(1976), p. 96.) Through his marriage with Margarita van de Perre, Nicolaes Jacobsz. had become the brother-in-law of Balthasar van de Perre of R 8218. |

Jasper van Wickevoort II, who was baptized in 1598, was only 24 in 1622 when he contributed to the upkeep of the poet Jan Jansz. Starter, under the proviso that all the contributors would have full access to all his poems and songs and would provide them for a reasonable price. The contributors gave two Flemish pounds each for this privilege (A. Bredius, Iets over Jan Jansz. Starter, Oud Holland, vol. 3, 1885, p.54). On 8 March 1637, Jasper van Vickevoort (II) advanced 3,700 f. to Abraham de Ligne II (the son of Abraham de Ligne I of R 21482) (NA 951, film 1174). On 3 May 1636, Casper van Wickevoort II signed an agreement with a bankrupt caffa worker, of whom he was a creditor (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, R.G.P.144(1974), p. 112). On 13 December 1639, Jasper van Wickevoort (II), from Amsterdam, 40 years old, no living parents, assisted by his brother Jochem van Wickvoort (II), living on the Coninxgracht, was betrothed to Elisabeth Rovers, 25, assisted by her swagerinne Catharina van Vickevoort (the sister of Jasper and Jochem) (DTB 675/206). Catharina van Vickevoort was married to Valerius Roever de oude, the father of the famous collector (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 917.) Jasper van Vickevoort was buried on 30 August 1661 (DTB 1068/84). |

She was baptized in Amsterdam on 13 March 1616, in the presence of Anneken Kornelis van Giels, David Hooft, and Constancija van Merlen (DTB 5/180). On 3 September 1637, Christina, Constantia (of R 8149), and Lucretia van Maerle declared that the portion of the inheritance (presumably of their father) to which their sister Agatha van Maerle (the wife of Hans van Solt II of R 21567) was entitled had lapsed due to her repudiation of her share. Nevertheless, they were willing to cede her portion to Agatha's children (NA 991, fol.65, Not. J. Bosch). On 14 January 1638, Gerrit van Rijssen (of R 18924) and Hans van Solt (de jonge, of R 21567) brought to the Orphan Chamber a number of obligations (in excess of 6,000 f.) on behalf of Lucretia, 22, their sister-in-law (vrouwensuster) and the daughter of the late Jan van Maerle, jeweler, and of Maria van Gils, on account of her inheritance (WK 50973/789). She died, unmarried on 14 February 1638 and was buried three days later (De Navorscher 84(1935), p. 39 and DTB 1045/103vo.) On 2 March 1638, Gerrit Ryssen and Hans van Solt (de jonge) appeared before the Orphan Chamber and declared that Lucretia was deceased and that the two children of Agatha van Maerle, whose father is Hans van Solt (de jonge), were entitled to 6000 f. from the inheritance. On 30 August 1640, Hans van Solt (de jonge) brought in an obligation for 12,000 f. on behalf of the afore-said children (WK 5073/789). |

He printed the poem by L. van den Bos on the Art Cabinet of Marten Kretzer (of R 24697, one of the buyers at the Gommer Spranger auction) in 1650. On 3 March 1635, Nicolaes Ravesteijn, from Amsterdam, 22 years, assisted by his father Paulus van Ravesteijn, lving on the Ooster Marckt, was betrothed to Anna Rotgans, with no living parents, assisted by her sister Lysbeth Rotgans, living in the Boomsloot (DTB 443/243). Ann Rotgans II who married Paulus van Ravesteijn, should be distinguished from Ann Heijnricks Rotgans I who married Pieter Meeusz. (NOTES to R 20516). On 6 July 1638, Nicolaes van Ravesteijn signed a contract with Coenraet Boonaert, letter setter, whereby the latter bound himself as master knecht (overseeing of a plant or a shop) for three years, to work 13 hours a day, supervise the printers' devils etc.. (NA 1376, Not. P. Barcman). Nicolas Raversteijn was buried in the Z.K. on 6 August 1678 (DTB 1092/17). Lysbeth (or Elisabeth) Rotgans and Anna Rotgans were nieces of Lucas Jacobsz. Rotgans de jonge of R 24924. The book seller Paulus Aertsz. van Ravesteyn was married to Elisabeth Manuels Sweerts, whose father Manuel Sweerts and brother, the painter Jeronimus Sweerts, were also buyers at auction (R 32807 and R 29288). In 1635, he was living in Leyden when he gave a procuration to David van Hogenhuijsen, book seller in Amsterdam, to act on his behalf regarding books and letter founts (NA 597, fol. 193, Not. Lamberti). |

He spent some time in Middelburg before settling in Amsterdam where he was first noted in 1629 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden p. 312). He was first married to Margrieta Bartolotti van den Heuvel (who died in 1630). Margrieta Bartolotti was a witness to the baptism of Salomon, son of the painter Adriaen van Nieulandt, in 1620 (R 20925). After the death of his first wife, he married Maria de Cocquel, the daughter of Jacques de Cocquel. On 25 June 1635, he transferred and sold to Pieter Cruytpenninck (Cruypenning) a great tannery and shoe mill (schoomolen) located in Sixmilebridge in the County of Thou in the Kingdom of Ireland, and leather for making soles valued at 2,000 f., the whole transfer amounting to 11,000 f. (NA 612, fol. 12, Not. Sybrant Cornelisz.) On 6 May 1637, Charles de Cocquel, the brother of Maria, declared that he owed his brother-in-law 1,600 (?) f. for the latter's share of the inheritance from Charles's father Jacques de Cocquel. Charles de Cocquel, on 9 February 1632, had approved an accounting of various goods in Jacques de Cocquel's estate, which were now (in 1637) turned over to Johannes de Renialme, to do as he saw fit. These included diamonds, wax statues, ivory wind instruments, seven viola da gambas (!), an iron press, some portraits, books, 67 maps, precious stones in a drawer, and so forth, proceeding from this inheritance (NA 642, film 4954, fol. 374). Cruypenning was married to Lucretia Coymans, the daughter of Jasper Coymans of R 31693. He remarried with Maria Weinrig from Delft in 1639 with whom he lived on the Keizersgracht. On 12 August 1640, Joannes de Renialme and Maria Wijnrig had their son Joannes baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Marcus de la Palma (DTB 42/211). The witness to the baptism is likely to be Marcus de la Palma II since the first of the name was already doing business before the Alteration of 1574. Marcus de la Palma I and his brother Salvador de la Palma were prominent Middelburg merchants, doing business together, dealing in goods captured by freebooters. (De Renialme spent some time in Middelburg before moving to Amsterdam and Delft). After the Alteration of 1574, Marcus I and Salvador both became burgomaster of Middelburg (V. Enthoven, Een symbiose tussen koopman en regent in Ondernemers & bestuurders (Lesger and Noordegraaf ed), pp. 209-210). Finally, on 1 January 1643, Johannes de Renialme married Catharina d'Overdage with whom he lived in de Salamander in Amsterdam (on the marriage, see Nederlandsche Leeuw 79(1962), col. 35). The Salamander may have been the house where Joannes Wtenbogaert (the Remonstrant preacher) had lived in 1631, on the Kloveniersburgwal. De Renialme, at the time of his death in 1657, was living on the Fluwele Burchwal. He was buried on 20 April 1657 (Strauss, Rembrandt Documents, p. 187.) On 12 March 1636, Willem van Tongeren (silk cloth dealer, cited in R 36435) and Pieter Cruypenninck reached an agreement concerning an obligation, incurred and signed on 30 November 1634, which Van Tongeren had guaranteed. Van Tongeren agreed to pay Cruypenninck 3,740 f. as part of the settlement (NA 413, fol. 216 and foll.) After Cruypenninck's death (he was buried on 17 April 1639), Lucretia had the paintings in an attic belonging to Lambert Massa (of R 32152), which were said to belong to Johannes de Renialme, inventorized. One of these paintings was a priest by Rembrandt (INVNO 1040). It would appear that Cruypenninck was in some sort of business association with De Renialme, probably as a financing partner of De Renialme's art trading business. This emerges from an agreement dated 18 March 1650 where De Renialme and Lucretia Coeymans, assisted by the Notary Eggericx, agreed to settle their differences and to liquidate all their joint accounts (alle reckeningen tot diesen dage). Lucretia Coymans had apparently sued De Renialme. The latter agreed to pay her 3,000 f. to settle all her claims, in three 1,000 f. installments over the next two and a half years. The debts seem to have arisen, at least in part, during Pieter Cruypenninck's life time (NA 1818, film 2083, Not. Eggericx). On De Renialme's art sales to the Grand Elector Friederich Wilhelm, see the TEXT to R 100 of Montias1. For the 1640 inventory of paintings belonging to De Renialme, see INVNO 1040; for the 1657 inventory of the paintings left after his death, see INVNO 180. De Renialme's widow had the inventory made after receiving from a high court a letter of mandament which gave her the benefit of inventory. This suggests that De Renialme was more or less insolvent at the time of his death. |

Buyer Notes | On 3 September 1624, the eersame Isaack Rogge, kistemaecker (boxmaker, joiner), and the honorable Martyntge van den Broeck passed their testament, naming each other universal heirs (NA 389, fol. 82). In 1631, Isaack Rogge paid a tax of 10 f., at which time he was living in the Barndesteech as he still was when he bought the present lot (Kohier, fol. 150, p. 35). On 14 November 1631, Sandrina Roggen, widow of Govert op Heijde, appeared for herself and also as guardian of her minor-age children, Jan, Pieter, and Maiken op Heijde regarding the estate of her late husband. She appeared before Notary Hoogeboom with Isaack Rogge, her brother and guardian (Not. 842, Not. Hoogeboom). On 16 November 1633, Sandrina Roggens, assisted by her guardian Isaack Roggen, together with her brother-in-law Pieter Jansz. Singel, presented her three children, whose late father was Govert op Heyde, to the Orphan Chamber (WK 073/789). On 30 November 1638, Ysaac Rogge, widower of Martijntje Jans van den Broeck, presented the son of Jacob Jansz. van den Broeck, balance-maker, to the Orphan Chamber, pursuant to the division of goods left by Martijntje Jans van den Broeck (WK 5073/789). On 25 March 1639, Ysaack Roggen, from Antwerp, widower of Martijntje Jans, schrijnwercker (joiner), living in the Barndesteech, was betrothed to Maijke Jans Becx, from Haarlem, 38. Both were literate. (DTB 675/115). Andries van den Broeck of R 28792 was not a close relative of Jacob Jansz. van den Broeck cited above. |

The future bride was illiterate (DTB 430/340). Neeltgen Claes was almost certainly the sister of Harman Claesz. Spaerooch of INVNO 131. On 21 December 1628, the couple had their son Claes baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Marija Jans van Beuningen (the sister of Daniel Jansz. and the wife of Daniel Mostaert, of INVNO 1194) and of Harmen Claesz. Spaerooch (of INVNO 131, the father of Neeltgen Claes) (DTB 6/225). On 17 September 1636, Daniel van Beuningen appeared before the Orphan Chamber and declared that his three children, Claes, 8, Maritgen, 8, and Jan 1, whose mother was the late Neltgen Claes Spaeroogh, were entitled to 7,500 f. for their mother's inheritance (WK 5073/789.) On 6 May 1639, Daniel Jansz., widower of Neeltje Claes [Spaeroogh], was betrothed to Annetje Isaacks (DTB 451/42). He was bode of the Orphan Chamber, a function he took over from his father Jan Dircksz. in 1627 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 343 and I.E. van Eeghen, Jaarboek Amstelodamum 61 (1969), p.79). One of his children, named Daniel, born in 1628, became a paper dealer (Elias, ibid.) On 16 May 1637, Daniel Jansz. van Beuningen, bode of the orphan chamber, 33, declared at the request of Gerrit Jacobs. Haringh of R 27290, likewise bode of the WK, that Elbrechge Thomas, wife of Arent Cornelisz., had gone to the house of the witness, with a specification (a sum in cash) of 3,000 f. Elbrechge had claimed that he, the witness, had received 1,000 f. more than he had signed for (NA 1276, Not. Pieter Barcman and an earlier deposition, cited in the TEXT of R 247 of Montias1) |
