BuyerWitmer Albertsz.
Buyer FamilyAlbertsz., Witmer
Buyer NotesWitmer Albertsz. was the son of the late Albert Martsz., whose goods were auctioned on this occasion. On April 6, 1617, Witmer Albertsz., 27 years of age, wine dealer, assisted by Albert Martsz., his father, was betrothed to Elisabeth Lodewijx van Rotterdam, 19, assisted by Franchoijs Lodewyx, her father (DTB 668/ 87). Franchoijs Lodewyx was the business partner of Emanuel Pelt of R 34656. He was perhaps Lutheran. He must have died shortly before 4 September 1625 when Henrick de Graeff, wine dealer, was named guardian over the child left by Witmer Albertsz. (WK 5073/513, fol. 37vo.) On the same day, Marten Albertsz., old burgomaster of Campen (perhaps Albert Martsz.'s father) and Cornelis Lucasz., executor of the testament of Albert Martsz., declared that Marten, 6 years old, the son of Witmer Albertsz., wine dealer, whose mother was Lysbeth Lodewycx, was entitled to a rente brief (a personal obligation) for 44 f. per year. The next day, Cornelis Lucasz. and Pauwels Ras brought 300 f. to the Orphan Chamber for the benefit of Lysbeth, 19, the daughter left by Witmer Witmersz. (presumbably the son of Witmer Albertsz.), wine dealer, whose mother (still living) is Tryn Jans. The money had been inherited from her niece Geertge Christiaens (WK 5073/789). Pauwels Ras was a cloth dealer (WK 5073/513, 26 March 1625). Cornelis Lucasz., the executor of Witmer's testament, is likely to be identical with the individual of that name who was taxed 80 f. in 1631 and lived on the Ooster Voorburgwal (Kohier, fol. 134, p. 31). Cornelis Lucasz. invested 2,200 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 206).

BuyerPierre Le Pont
Buyer FamilyPont, Pierre le (du)
Buyer NotesThe buyer may be identical with Pierre du Pont I, from Doornik, who became a poorter of Amsterdam in 1586 or his son Pierre du Pont II,born about 1593 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base). It was probably his father, koopman in Amsterdam, who sold linseed in 1616 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 164.). In 1618, Pierre du Pont I was a director of the old compagnie for woolen cloth. His account at the Wisselbank numbered 3 folios in 1611 and 1612 and 5 folios in 1615. Pierre du Pont I invested 18,000 f in V.O.C. shares in 1602 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 183-4). On 10 October 1614, Pierre du Pont I and his wife Marie Cologne, assisted their daughter Rebecca upon her betrothal to Thomas Maurois (or Morois) (of R 21918), of Canterbury, the pastor of the French church in Amsterdam, living for the last 18 months on the Oost-Indiese Kay. She was 28 years old (DTB 418/213). Maurois was also a buyer at Orphan Chamber auction (R 21918). In 1625, Pierre de Pont I (?) built (or had himself built) a house on the Keisersgracht (no. 259) (E. van Houten, Grachten, p. 45). Either Pierre du Pont I or II may be identical with Pieter Pont, living on the hoeck van de Wal, who paid a tax of 50 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 121vo, p. 29). Pierre du Pont (I ?) was either the nephew or the cousin of the painter Jacques de Ville (Oud Holland, vol. 7 (1899), p.87).

BuyerMatthijs Valckenburch
Buyer FamilyValckenburch, Matthijs
Buyer NotesThere are at least two Matthijs or Mattheus van Valckenburch. One was the brother of Lucas, Marcus, Maria, Susanna, and Margrita van Valckenburg, children of Jan van Valckenburgh (of R 31706) and of Elisabeth Michiels van Varlaer. In view of the fact that his father and his brother Lucas had both bought at auction, it is probable that it was he who was our buyer and not the other Matthijs Valckenburch who, with his wife Haasje Hectors, had their child Liertje (?) baptized in the presence of Rebecca Valckenburch, Cornelis Hoffe, and Gerrit Feijt on 30 August 1633 (DTB 41/269). This Matheus van Valckenburg was born in 1601 and would only have been 20 in 1621. He died on 23 October 1636. The goldsmith Gerrit Feijt was married to Susanna van Valckenburch, the daughter of Hans van Valckenburg, merchant in Amsterdam, born c. 1573, married to Gertruyd Hermans (1598-1643). Susanna was the sister of Matheus and Rebecca, the other witness to the baptism just cited (De Nederlandsche Leeuw 6(1944), On the children of Jan (or Hans) van Valckenburgh, see R 31706. Mattheus, the son of Jan van Valckenburgh, born in Antwerp in 1568, was a merchant doing business with his brother Lucas. He was first mentioned in Amsterdam in 1596 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 316). Mattheus lived a long time in England where he had business in the draining of marshes (Oud Holland 7(1889), p. 177). He was buried in Hatfield, England, on 4 April 1644 (Nederlandsche Leeuw, op.cit.) In 1606, Mathys Valckenburch, living in the Nieustraet in de Woltfries bought lots in the Haarlem lottery (GAA, 110/54 F 813). It is not clear which of the two Matheus this was. The inventory of Marcus van Valckenburch, living on the corner of the Onckelboersteechien, was taken on 30 December 1643 (INVNO 1238). It contained many paintings, some of which were quite valuable (i.e. a large painting of lions assessed at 200 f.), all without attribution (NA 1414, film 1381, Not. F. Bruyning).

BuyerPieter Roo Claes
Buyer FamilyRoo Claes (Rooclaes), Pieter
Buyer NotesOn January 18, 1592, Pieter Rooclaes, varentgeselle (sailor on a barge), 20, living on the corner of the Minnebroerssteech, was betrothed to Aeltgen Pieters, 20, who may have been a sister of Giertje Pieters. Both were barely literate (DTB 406/123). In 1606, Pieter Rooclaes, living in het Roopaert in the Kreupelsteech, bought lots in the Haarlem lottery for 1 f. 16 st. (GAA, 66/106 F 554). On 11 December 1606, Pieter Rooclaes and Jacob Engelsz., married to Lijsbeth Claesdr., divided an inheritance, which included two houses on the Lastage near the Hooftbrug (NA 5, fol. 120, Not. Pilorius, Extracten). Jacob Engelsz. may be the individual with the family name Spithoff who signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628 and was named as guardian of the children of the sculptor Gerrit Thomasz. of R 23802. Pieter Rooclaes may have remarried after the death of his first wife with a woman named Josijna Jacobs (the daughter of Jacob Engelsz. ?) On 22 March 1616, Pieter Rooclaes and Josijna Jacobs had their son Jan baptized in the N.K. (DTB 39/417). On 19 May 1617, Pieter Roclaes and Josyna Roclaes had their daughter Josijna baptized in the N.K. (DTB 39/459). In the present sale, Pieter Roo Claes also bought some silver.

BuyerFrederick Leecker
Buyer FamilyLeecker (Lecker), Frederick
Buyer NotesOn 26 April 1600, Frederick Lecker, wine dealer, and Machtelt Leckers had their child Pieter baptized in the O.K. The witness was Heyndrickgen Cremers (DTB 3/230). Machtelt Leckers is probably identical with Machtelt Kamerlingx, wife of Vrerick Leeker, who was buried on 19 July 1614 (DTB 1043/152) (R 36047). Pieter Leecker was indeed said to be 25 years old when he was betrothed to Elsken van Tongerloo, from Amsterdam, 23, assisted by her father Jan van Tongerloo, on 15 August 1625 (DTB 670/83). Jan van Tongerloo was a merchant of South Netherlandish origin, first noted in Amsterdam in 1590 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 315). Frederick Leecker signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. As early as 20 September 1599, Frederick Leecker sought to obtain money for a letter of exchange in his name from Hendrick Cornelissen, insolvent (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 178(1981). p. 205). On 23 January 1609, Frederick Lecker freighted a ship to La Rochelle and various ports in England (Winkelman, op.cit. 185(1983), p. 17.) He died before the end of March 1638, when a dispute arose between Pieter and Gerrit Leecker, brothers (sons of Frederick Lecker), concerning their inheritance from his estate. They had reached an agreement onder benefitie van inventarisse (NA 696A, film 4982).

BuyerRogier Meuwels tot Casper Honckelboer
ProvenanceThis may be the painting een strijt van Hercules gedaen by Francken in INVNO 273, LOT 0006. However, LOT 0013 of the present inventory may also be identical with LOT 0006 of INVNO 273.
Buyer FamilyMeuwels, Rogier
Buyer NotesOn 6 November 1625, some goods belonging to Rogier Meuwels were sold after his death (INVNO 738). He was living at the time of his death on the Oude Heeregracht near the Heijsteegh. The day after, on November 7, Hans, Claes, and Oste (?) Meuwels, the heirs of Rogier Meuwels, named Warnaer Albertsz. and Pieter Segersz., silversmith, to handle the succession (GAA, NA 351B, film 6406). At the time the present lot was bought, Rogier Meuwels was living in the house of Casper (or Jasper) Onckelboers (or Honckelboer), a cloth finisher and cloth merchant. Jasper Onckelboers, from Antwerp, 26, assisted by his father Melchior Honckelboers, was betrothed to Sara de Vett, also from Antwerp, on 8 October 1605 (DTB 411/596). He died before 25 January 1635 when Abraham Anthonisz. brought to the Orphan Chamber the accounts for his three children (WK 5073/1193). Dirck Honckelboer de oude was the brother of Melchior Honckelboer cited above. On various members of the Honckelboer family who traded in Russia, including Melchior Honckelboer, see Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden 1560-1640, p.268). Warnaer Albertsz., cited above, is probably the individual of that name who married the widow of Jacob Calaber (of R 30263) in 1633 (NA 991, fol. 111, Not. J. Bosch). Melchior Onckelboer was also a cloth merchant. On 25 June 1638, Abraham Anthonisz., the famous Remonstrant, turned over to the Orphan Chamber the accounts for the assets inherited by the children of Jasper Honckelboers (WK 5073/1193). Hans Meuwels, the son of Rogier Meuwels, was a silk spinner (zydereder). His death inventory was taken on 2 April 1637 (NA 714, Not. P. Carels).

BuyerHendrick Cromhout
Provenanceprobably identical with lot 0004 (een geboorte van Badens) in INVNO 273.
Buyer FamilyCromhout, Hendrick
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Hendrick Bartelsz. Cromhout, was betrothed to Aagje Govers Wuytiers on 30 September 1604 (DTB 411/319). He was the eldest son of Barthold Adriaensz. Cromhout, koopman op den Oudezijds Achterburgwal, 1550-1624. Aagje Govers was the sister of Dirck Govertsz. Wuytiers of R 7663. Barthold Adriaensz. dealt in lumber, indigo, cotton. Aefken Goverts Wittjeers, wife of Hendrick Kromhout, was buried on 13 March 1640 in the W.K. (DTB 1046/9). She left assets valued at 435,000 f. (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 269). In, 1608, H. Cromhout, who is probably identical with the buyer, was said to be the heir of Jan van Baerle (I), who had died circa 1603. He signed a petition to the burgomasters of Amsterdam requesting the revocation of a prohibition agains the use of cashiers in effecting money transactions (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 16). Hendrick Cromhout paid a tax of 600 f. in 1631, at which time he was living on the dwarstraet van 't Spinhuis (Kohier, fol. 244vo, p. 56). Hendrick Cromhout bought flower bulbs at the sale of the late Pieter Pietersz. tuynman on 25 September 1626 (WK 5073/952). The failure of Hendrick Cromhout to accede to any position in the Vroedschap may be due to his conversion to Roman Catholicism. On Hendrick Cromhout, see also Maandblad Amstelodamum 49(1962), p. 215.

Buyer FamilySchellinger, (Hillebrand)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be Hillebrand Schellinger (1580-1632), schepen in 1616, director of the V.O.C. from 1614 until his death, captain of the civil militia in 1616. He married Grietge Willemsdr. Pauw (1582-1667) on 4 December 1605 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 300). In 1606, he was living in de Pauw in the Warmoessraet, when he bought lots for 1 f. 16 st. in the Haarlem lottery (GAA, 148/29 F 1062). In 1612, Hillebrand and his father Cornelis Schellinger I (distinct from his nephew Cornelis Gerritsz. Schellinger of R 20235 who was only 17 years old in 1612) invested 18,000 f. in the second subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 259. Hillebrand Schellinger was a weesmeester for several years beginning in 1630 (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 383). He was an ardent Counter-Remonstrant (ibid., vol. 1, p. 492), In 1631 outschepen Hillebrant Schellinger paid a tax of 350 f. (Kohier, fol. 4vo., p. 2.)

BuyerAnthony de Lange wijncooper
Buyer FamilyLange, Anthony de
Buyer NotesOn 19 April 1618, Anthoni de Lange, from Utrecht, 29 years old, living on the Coningsgracht, was betrothed to Trijntje Harmansdr. van der Pol, living in the Teertuynen, assisted by Harmen Ghysbertsz. van der Pol, schepen, her father, and her mother Reymbrich Dirxdr. (DTB 422/231). Trijntje van der Pol died in 1623. After her death, Anthony remarried with Ida Hendricks van Bronckhorst in April 1626 (DTB 431/123). Hendrick van Bronckhorst I, born in Weesp, married Maritge Hendricks Haeck on 28 August 1581. He was said to be 38 in a deposition concerning the shipping of rye grain dated 19 August 1595 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 178(1981), p. 51.) He invested 6,000 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares. Vincent Hendricksz. van Bronckhorst, Maritge Hendricks's brother, who died before 1602, also dealt in grain (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 179). (The individual who signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628 H. van Bronckhorst was probably Hendrick van Bronckhorst II who was said to be 31 years old in a deposition of 31 July 1619 (NA 200, film 111, Not. J.F. Bruyning). On 15 April 1630, Sara Willemsdr., widow of Hans Leendertssoon de jonge, hatmaker, assisted by Cornelis Lennertsen, her uncle by marriage, Jan Lucassen, lumber dealer, and Claes Claessen Lichting, her brothers-in-law, sold a house on the Keysersgracht (no. 103) to Anthony de Lange, wine dealer, and Dr. Jan van Hertoochsvelt. Jan van Hertochvelt (or Hartochvelt) was, like Anthony de Lange, a signatory of the Remonstrant petition of 1628. The house they bought was one of those on which the Remonstrant Church was founded (E. Lievense-Pelser, De Remonstranen en hun kerk, Jaarboek Amstelodamum 67(1975), p. 130.) Anthony de Lange and his wife Ida or Itjen baptized their daughter Maritje in the Remonstrant Church on 26 June 1633 (DTB 301). He was a wine dealer who lived in 't Wapen van Utrecht. He was a director of the V.O.C. In 1631, he paid a tax of 40 f., at which time he lived on the O.Z. Voorburgwal (Kohier, fol. 133 vo., p. 31.) In 1645, he was a lieutenant of a company of schutters under Captain Jacob de Rogh and was painted with other members of the company by Nicolaes Elias (Rijksmuseum, All the Paintings of the Rijksmuseum, p. 219). He died in 1652. Anthony de Lange's first father-in-law, Harmen Ghysbertsz. van de Pol(l), was a member of the Amsterdam Raad from 1595 to 1618 when he was removed (for his Remonstrant sympathies?) by stadhouder Maurits. He was reinstated in 1629 (shortly after the Remonstrant petition of 1628, which he did not sign). He was an alderman of Amsterdam, with interruptions, from 1598 to 1614 and from 1628 to 1632 (president of the board of aldermen in 1629 and 1632). He was Weesmeester from 1608 to 1610, 1616-1619, 1625-1627, and 1634-1638 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 220 and p. 1331.) He may have exerted a pro-Remonstrant influence on the policies of the Orphan Chamber.

BuyerJan van Wely (III)
ProvenanceIdentical with lot 0010 of INVNO 273 (een Bacchus gedaen mette pen van Goltzius)
Buyer FamilyWely, Jan (or Hans) van, III
Buyer NotesJan van Wely III was the son of Jan van Wely II (of R 21219), who was assassinated in The Hague in 1616 and of Leonora Hawkins. Like his father and grandfather, Jan van Wely I, he was a jeweler and trader in precious stones. On 21 February 1625, he was named guardian over the son left by Jan de Hooges (bookkeeper) and Mayken Tirons, along with Abraham Walpergen and the painter Pieter Stalpaert of R 26682 (WK 5073/513, fol. 29). Abraham de Walpergen was the uncle of Maaike de Walpergen who married Pieter Stalpaert in 1611 (R 26682). On 13 May 1626, he brought to the Orphan Chamber an interest-bearing obligation yielding 42 f. a year on behalf Anthoni, 4, the son of Jan de Hooges, bookkeeper, whose mother was Mayken Tyron (WK 5073/789). On 16 November 1640, Hans van Wely de jonge, son of Hans van Wely de oude, was cited as having sold granates for 12 gulden a pound to Charles van Dreyssen, a ruby cutter (robijnsnijder). David ter Haer (of R 18944) supported Van Dreyssen's contention that the stones sold by an Italian named Claes Pietersz. to a merchant were granates and not rubies (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P.144(1974), p. 281). He died in 1652 (Maandblad Amstelodamum 67(1980), p. 14).

BuyerJan Gerritsz. Kieft
ProvenanceProbably identical with een stuck van Jupiter van Dirck Barendsz., lot 0002 of INVNO 273.
Buyer FamilyKieft, Jan Gerritsz.
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Jan Gerritsz. Kieft, was the son of Gerrit Willemsz. Kieft, 1571-1622, merchant on the O.Z. Voorburgwal, and of Machteld Jansdr. Huydecooper (who married Gerrit Kieft in 1595) (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 187). He was also the brother of Ryngkert Gerritsz. Kieft whose goods were sold after his death in 1623 (INVNO 652, R 551 of Montias1). Jan Gerritsz. was 26 and living on the Fluwele Burchwal when he was betrothed to Jannetien Elberts van Loens, 18, on 10 June 1623. He was assisted by his mother Machteld Jans (DTB 428/90). He was one of the 21 lyeffhebbers van de Nederduytsche Poesy who signed a contract to support the poet Jan Jansz. Starter in 1625 (Oud Holland 3(1885), p.54), Jan Gerritsz. Kieft must have died about 1628, since his widow Jannetje Elbers had been a widow for five years when, on 11 August 1633, she remarried with the wine dealer and painter Gysbert van Schendel (who was assisted by his uncle Gerrit Gerritsz. Parijs, the father of Jan Gerritsz. Parijs of R 20584) (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 2000.) She was a widow of Jan Gerritsz. Kieft on the Zeedijck when she was insinuated along with many other wine dealers on 30 November 1630 (NA 910, Not. Pieter Eyloff). On 29 May 1646, Gerrit Gerritsz. Parys transferred to his daughter Jannetje, among others, two paintings by Gysbert van Schendel (Bredius, loc. cit.)

BuyerWillem Mourisz. Smit
ProvenanceProbably identical with een stuck schilderij zijnde een bancket gedaen [left blank], LOT 0021 of INVNO 273.
Buyer FamilySmit, Willem Mourisz. (Mauritsz.)
Buyer NotesOn 18 August 1614, Willem Mauritsz., 19, declared at the request of Judith Dircksdr., wife of Jasper Cornelisz. Pijl, that he had delivered a sum of money to Judith Dircksdr. (NA 377, fol. 312). The age of Willem Mauritsz. given in this deposition, is consistent with that of Willem Mourisz. Smit, given in the following betrothal record. On 18 March 1622, Willem Mourisz. Smit, 26 years old, living on the Heeregracht, assisted by his mother Grietje Pieters, was betrothed to Anna Muijlgens, 26, assisted by haer niece Marytge Meuyltgens (DTB 669/74). Anna Muijlgens was almost certainly the daughter of Hans Muylkens of INVNO 1138. This is supported by the indication in the right-hand margin of several works of art in Muylkens's inventory that the item was identified (?) by Willem Smith and by a declaration of Willem Smidt, merchant in Amsterdam, dated 6 October 1639, wherein Smidt claimed that his brother-in-law, the painter Adriaen Muyltges, owed him 1500 f., which he had borrowed in 1630 (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1516 and the TEXT of R 1033 of Montias1). Anna Muijlgens was thus the sister of Geertie Muilkens, the wife of the painter Barent Noorman of R 30045. She assisted Anna Wijntjes upon her betrothal to Lodowijck Borremans of R 20504 on 15 July 1641 (R 35477 and INVNO 1165). In 1631, Willem Mourisz. Smith paid a tax of 20 f., at which time he was living on the West side of the Nieuwendijck (Kohier, fol. 284, p. 64). At an unknown date, Willem Smit remarried with Lysbeth Jacobs, the daughter of Wybrich Jans of R 19480. His new wife was the sister of Ermtje Jacobs, the wife of Gysbert Michielsz. Hoppesack of R 32342. Willem Smit and Wybrich Jansz. both lived on the West side of the Nieuwendijck. Willem Smit was the testamentary executor of the will of Wybrich Jans (NA 1413, film 1381, Not. F. Bruyning). On 6 November 1632, the honorable Hendrick Barentsz. Bontemantel, 60 (of R 31983), and Willem Smith, 37, both merchants, made a deposition at the request of the honorable Jeroen de Hase (of R 29604) about the authenticity of a letter written by the late Cornelis Matelyoff (NA 694B, Not. J. Warnaerts). On 1 September 1634, a young woman accused Adriaen Muylties of having had fleshly conversation with her (NA 751, film 5178, fol. 397). On 29 September 1636, Sr. Adriaen Muyltjes, merchant, declared that he had a procuration from Claes Thomasz., merchant in Helscheneur (Elsinore in Denmark) (NA 372). On 30 September 1636, Adriaen Muijltjes, presently living in Denmark, gave his brother-in-law Willem Smit, a procuration to act on his behalf (NA 597, fol. 552/3, Not. Lamberti). Some time before 21 April 1648, Cornelia Spijckers, widow of the painter Adriaen Muylties, and Willem Smith, uncle and blood relative of the children of Muylties's first marriage (with Janneken van Diggelen), who were still of minor age, requested Beneficium inventaris from the court in The Hague for the estate of Adriaen Muylties, which was heavily laden with debts. This was granted on 21 April (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1520).

ProvenanceIdentical with St. Johannes doopsel van Badens , lot 0005 in INVNO 273.
Buyer FamilyLennip (Lennep), Wouter van
Buyer NotesOn April 3, 1611, Wouter van Lennip (he signs Lennep), wijnverlater, 23 years of age, living on the Warmoesstraet, was betrothed to Agneetien Barents, 21, assisted by her sister Jannetje Jans (DTB 415/68). In 1641, Wouter van Lennep, wine dealer, put up a number of paintings as collateral for a debt (see INVNO 214). The present lot was not among those paintings. The daughter of Wouter van Lennip, named Geertruyt, was 16 years old and living on the O.Z. Achterburchwal, when, on 16 November 1630, she was betrothed to Henri Tivaert, from Amsterdam, 29 years old, assisted by Jean Tivaert de oude, suijckerbacker (DTB 436/209). On 27 June 1637, Herri Tyvaert, sugar refiner, 36, and Grietge Pieters, widow of Harmen Harmensz., declared at the request of Agnietge Barents, wife of Wouter van Lennep. and of Grietge Barents, wife of Jacob Martensz., that they had well known Elsge Jans, wife of Pieter Hendricksz. She was the aunt of the petitioners on their father's side (NA 598, fol. 253, Not. Lamberti). It is not clear whether Jacob Martens was the painter who, in 1606, had been married to Susanna van de Velde (see the NOTES to R 30502). On Henri and Jan Tivaert, see R 20955. It is a curious coincidence that there was a painter named Wouter de Lennep who died before 27 October 1626 when his wife Tryntgen Huybrechts brought 1200 f. for the children's inheritance to the Orphan Chamber (WK 5073/789).

Buyer FamilyTock, Abraham
Buyer NotesThe buyer Abraham Tock paid a tax of 7 f. 10 st. in 1631, at which time he lived on the Achterburchwal (Kohier, fol. 47). On June 20, 1617, Abraham Tock, from Embden, 27 years of age, assisted by his mother Clara de Wolff, living in the Haarlemmersluijs, was betrothed to Catalyna van der Hoeven, from Dordrecht, 23 (DTB 421/240). The couple made a codicil to their testament on 13 May 1618 (NA 200, film 111, Not. J. F. Bruyning). In 1619, a dispute arose between the merchant Niclaes Cocques and Abraham Tock regarding a procuration issued by Clara Elicarts. Clara Elecaert was the wife of the jeweler Hans Ruttens (see NOTES of R 31208). Abraham Tock was buried in the N.K. on 20 September 1639 (DTB 1054/126).
