Buyer | Gerrit Luls [crossed out: Trintje de dochter] |
Buyer Family | Luls (Lus), Gerrit (Geraerdt) (de oude, I) |
Buyer Notes | Gerrit Luls (I), who is probably the buyer of this lot, was first married to Catharina Luijts, with whom he was betrothed on 21 March 1598. He was assisted by his brother-in-law David Luls, who seems to have been a son of the cloth dealer Lenart Luls, cited below (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 231.) Catharina Luijts, at the time of her betrothal, from Aachen, was 25 years old. She was assisted by her neve Jan Commelin (of INVNO 649) and her aunt Franse Minneken (?) (DTB 408/311). Lenaert, Abram, and David Luls, as well presumably as Gerrit Luls, were of South Netherlandish origin (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 307). David Luls was 44 and Abraham Luls, 40, according to a deposition they made on 4 May 1618, concerning the good character of Pieter Cruijpenning (the late husband of Lucretia Coymans of INVNO 1040) (NA 200, film 111, Not. J.F. Bruyning). On 29 May 1637, Pieter (de) Haen (I or II), and Pieter Cruypenninck, as joint executors of the estate of Abraham Luls, named Isaack van Hembach, merchant in Hamburg, to collect money from the late Pieter Luls, in his life merchant in Hamburg (NA 951, Not. B. Baddel). David's son, Matheus Davidsz. Luls, merchant, later became co- executor of the testament of the late Abraham Luls according to an act of 11 February 1639. He was named in replacement of the recently deceased Pieter Cruijpenning (of INVNO 1192) (NA 419A, Not. Jacob and Nicolaes Jacobsz.) For his bankrupt inventory of 1655, see INVNO 1276. However, the buyer may also be Geraerdt Luls II, baptized on 12 January 1603, son of Lenert Luls and Magdalena van Gansepoel and brother of David Luls already cited. The witness was Niclaes Coninck (DTB 39/1). He would then have been 18 years old at the time of the sale, which is not impossible. Gerard Luls II died before 10 November 1662 when his (fairly poor) death inventory was taken (NA 1857, Not. N. Kruijs). Several members of the Luls family were involved in mont-de-piete lending. On the family relation between Magdalena van Gansepoel and the collector Jan Gansepoel of INVNO 616 of 1625, see R 516 of Montias1. Gerrit Luls paid a tax of 100 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the Keysersgracht (Kohier, fol. 92). On 15 November 1625, Gerrit Luls, Hendrick van den Bogaert, and Marcus Westhoff lodged an insinuation concerning the payment for the delivery of wine by (or to) Harmen Hendricksz. (NA 351B, film 6406, Not. W. Cluyt). Marcus Westhoff was one of the lyeffhebbers van de Nederduytsche Poesy who patronized the poet Jan Jansz. Starter (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 54). He was the brother-in-law of Lambert Helmichsz. Tweenhuysen, whom he assisted when the latter signed a pre-nuptial contract with Cornelia van Breen, born in Dantzig, on 4 September 1623. He was also assisted by his uncle, the well-known merchant Lambert van Tweenhuysen (cited in the NOTES to R 20751, R 25311, and R 29906). She was assisted by her brother Daniel van Breen (the calligrapher), by her uncle Anthony van Breen, cited in the NOTES to R 20074, and by her neven (probably cousins) Philips Metsu (perhaps of R 27367) and Andries Rijckerts, cited in the TEXT of R 1116 of Montias1 (Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden 1560-1640, p. 278). On 2 May 1632, Hendrick van den Bogaert, together with Abraham le Fevre (I), was named to represent Claes Melchiorsz., commandeur of the Noorth Compagnie, to appear before the aldermen to sell the latter's house on the Keisersgracht, named Eylant van Groenlant (NA 991, fol. 23, Not. J. Bosch). Hendrick van den Bogaert was the uncle of Barent de Beven who signed a pre-nuptial agreement with Sara Spruyt, daughter of Govert Spruyt and Cathelyne de Clerq on 4 December 1649 (NA 1497, Not. W. Hasen). |
