BuyerPieter Meusen wijncoper op de Zeedijck in't calff
Buyer FamilyMeusen (Meusz.), Pieter (Calff?)
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Pieter Meusen, was a wine merchant (as was probably the defunct owner of the auctioned goods, Jan Vincentsz. Koster). The house name Calff was situated on the Zeedijck. It was already owned by the Calff family in the 16th century (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 134). Pieter Meeusz. Calff, born in 1592, was buried in the O.Z.K. on 17 May 1627. On 14 August 1614, Pieter Meeusz. (signs Mieusz.) 22, assisted by his stepfather Egbert Gerritsz. and his mother Anna Claes, living on the Zeedijck, was betrothed to Annetje Rotgans, 24, assisted by her father Heynrick Meuusz. Rotgans, living op 't Water (DTB 481/161). Annetje Rotgans I, who married Pieter Meusz. in 1614, should be distinguished from Ann Rotgans II who married Paulus van Ravesteyn on 3 March 1635 (R 8196). Egbert Gerritsz. was the second husband of his mother Annetge Claes Calff (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p. 264). On 20 June 1635, Annetge Hendricx, the widow of the late Pieter Meusz. Calf, was said to have been left with three children (WK 5073/789). If Calf, who was buried in 1627, was the buyer he cannot be identical with Pieter Meus, cited in the following document. On 2 March 1639, Pieter Meus, merchant, insinuated Arent de Cruijs regarding an unpaid letter of exchange (NA 419A, notaries Jacob and Nicolaes Jacobsz.)

BuyerDaniel van Genega de oom van de kinderen
Buyer FamilyGenega (Genegen), Daniel van
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Daniel van Genega (or van Genegen), was born in Dordrecht in 1582. In August or September 1606, Daniel van Genegen, living in the Banammerstraet, in de Lywatpars, bought lots in the Haarlem lottery for 1 f. 16 st. (GAA, 96/31 F 721). On 28 December 1606, Daniel van Genegen, from Dordrecht, 24 years old, assisted by his mother Maria van der Oort (?), was betrothed to Aeltjen Vincent Kosters, 26, living in the Niesdel, assisted by her father Vincent Jacobsz. Koster and her mother Giertgen Christoffels (DTB 412/127). Aeltjen Vincent Kosters, the daughter of Vincent Jacobsz. Koster, alias Sent Peylder, was the sister of Jan Vincent Coster, whose goods were sold at this auction (see also INVNO 887 and R 35950). He was thus de oom van de kinderen. On 11 January 1609, Daniel van Genegen and Aeltjen Senten (Vincent) had their son Pieter baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Jan Vinsenten (the mother's brother) (DTB 4/268). On 14 August 1630, Daniel van Genegen, wine dealer, appeared before the Orphan Chamber and declared that his three children, Pieter, 22, Maria, 16, and Vincent, 9, whose late mother was Aeltgen Vincenten, were entitled to 12,000 f. for their mother's inheritance (WK 5073/789). After the death of his first wife, Daniel van Genegen married Gertruyt Duckers (or Duijckers), born in Cologne, widow of Hendrick Voet I, retail merchant (on whom see the NOTES to R 20357) on 27 August 1630. He lived in the Bantamstraet, thus in the house of the deceased, where he also carried on a wine-dealing business (Elias, Vroedschap, pp. 21-2). On 17 June 1637, Daniel van Genegen, as husband and guardian of Geertruyt Duijckers and as co-heir of her father Nicolaes Duijkers, insinuated Daniel Roelants, claiming that the latter had made malignant remarks about the estate (NA 919, film 1150). On Daniel Roelants, the brother-in-law of Johannes van Vickevoort, see the TEXT of R 1170 (INVNO 1249) of Montias1 and the NOTES to R 24559 of Montias2. Daniel van Genegen was cited in connection with a house that he had leased in the Doelenstraet on 10 May 1642 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 144(1974), p. 340). Daniel van Genegen, merchant in Amsterdam, freighted one ship in 1607, one in 1608, and two in 1610 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 184(1983), p. 600 and 185(1983), p. 628). He paid a tax of 45 f in 1631, at which time he lived on the Oostervoorburchwal (Kohier, fol. 132, p.31). His daughter Maria van Genegen married the rich merchant (and buyer at auction) Jan van Baerle II (of R 20427). His son Vincent van Genegen, born in 1621, was also a wine dealer. He was involved in a sensational attempt by Nicolaas Heinsius, the son of the famous philologue, to try to break his betrothal vows with Margaretha van Wullen. Heinsius found a witness who claimed that he had seen Van Genegen sleeping and committing coitus interruptus with Van Wullen (Roodenburg, Onder censuur, p. 269). He finally married Sara de Wilhem. the sister of Paolo de Wilhem (Willem) of INVNO 197. On 7 September 1634, Pieter van Genegen, baptized in 1609, gave a procuration to Egbert Roeloffs to collect various debts in Christina in Norway, including one for 17 rycxdaelders from the painter [Adam ?] van Breen (NA 910, Not. Eyloff).

BuyerJasper Segers coorncoper
Buyer FamilySegers, Jasper
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Jasper Segers, was a grain merchant, born in Antwerp, who became a poorter of Amsterdam on 12 July 1594 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base and Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 313). His daughter Christina Segers was the first wife of Jan de Marees Danielsz. (Jaarboek C.B.G. 44(1990), p. 181). He was taxed, along with his wife and children, 200 f. in 1631 on the O.Z. Burchwal, near the St. Pieters Kerckhoff (Kohier, fol. 242, p. 55). from 1620 to 1640, he was a regent of the O.Z. Huiszittenhuis (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 266 and Jaarboek C.B.G. 44(1990) cited above).

BuyerJacques van der Laen in de Beijenhoeck
ProvenanceThis is almost certainly the painting of Nebucadnesar in Jan Vincent Coster's earlier inventory (R 7201). It may also be identical with the painting with the same title as above in Willem Calschuyr's inventory (R 16221).
