BuyerWillem Taet
Buyer FamilyTaet, Willem
Buyer NotesWillem Taet was a fairly frequent buyer at auction. He bought three small paintings for f. 1: 7:-- ath the sale of Mary Dircx Schoonemans on 16 April 1619 (INVNO 597). He also bought satin armosijn at the auction of Anthony Deijgremont (INVNO 1008). He may have been a retail cloth dealer. He was probably related to Jan Taet who, with his wife Mary Hendricx, had his daughter Ytse baptized in the O.K. on 1 November 1609 (DTB 4/198).

BuyerClaes Fonteijn op de hoeck van de Nieuwestraet
Buyer FamilyFonteijn, Claes (Nicolaes)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is probably identical with Claes Jansz. Fonteijn who paid a tax of 35 f in 1631, at which time he lived on the Nieuwen Dijck (Kohier, fol. 29, p. 6). He was the son of Dr. Johan Fonteyn (of R 7647), the brother of the apothecary Rem Thonisz. Fonteyn (of R 27380) and the greatgrandson of Dr. Claes Plemp, all members of a prominent R.C. family (see the genealogy in Dudok van Heel in Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, Amsterdam, 1998, p. 58). On 7 January 1621, Niclaes Fonteijn, 19 years of age, assisted by his father Dr. Jan Fonteijn (of R 7647), living on the Coningsgraft was betrothed to Maritge Jans (Loen), 18, assisted by (Dr.) Jan Henricksz. (Loen) (1562-1634), her father, and Maartje Jans, her mother, living on the Nieuwendijck (DTB 425/188). On 25 November 1631, Joan Heyndricksz. Loen, former apothecary, bequeathed to his daughters, each half of his goods. He left to Maritgen Jans, married to Dr. Nicolaes Fonteyn his house de Notemuscaet on the Nieuwen Dijck and to the children of his late daughter Aefgen, who married to the cloth merchant Jan Pietersz. van Dijck, a house on the Blauwburgwal (NA 445, fol. 271, Not. P. Mathijsz., Extracten). Claes Fonteyn graduated in medicine in Reims and was noted as an apothecary in Amsterdam in 1637. In 1640 and 1643, he was inspector of the Collegium Medicum in Amsterdam. In 1644, he became personal physician to the Archbishop of Cologne. Jan, Claes and Barent Fonteijn (married to Pietertge Meijnerts) were all lovers of poetry but, according to Mattheus Tengnagel, none was gifted as a poet (Oud Holland 1(1883), p. 216). Claes Fonteijn died before 22 September 1645 when his widow had an inventory drawn up of some of her household goods (INVNO 523, R 429 of Montias1). It was probably through his wife, Maria Loen, who was apparently the niece of Barent Adriaensz. Hartochvelt (R 30608), that Claes Fonteyn was related to the latter.

BuyerClaes Barentsz. de oom
Buyer FamilyBarentsz., Claes
Buyer NotesClaes Barentsz., dyer, was a regent of the Aalmoezeniersweeshuis in 1618 (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 299-300). On 8 August 1623, the honorable Egbert Gerritsz. van der Hal and Gerrit Wittes Soutburch, both living in Leyden, appeared before Notary Westfrisius in their capacity as uncles, and Claes Barentsz., dyer, and Willem Barentsz., brothers, merchants in Amsterdam, as granduncles, of the children left by Goswinus van der Hal, and declared that they were the closest blood relatives of the children but, because of certain impediments [to their guardianship], the masters of the Orphan Chamber had named Mr. Jan Engels, attorney (of R 7620) as administrator of the goods coming to the children (WK 5073/513, fol. 13). Willem Barentsz. is probably the buyer of R 29385. Claes Barentsz., laeckenstopper, lived near Warmoesstraet 171 in 1599. On 24 March 1622, he appeared as rendant for the estate of Baertge, the daughter of Bartholomeus Floris, at which time he was said to be a dyer (WK 5073/1191). He was the brother of Jan Barentsz., likewise dyer, of R 32357. He is probably not identical with the grain dealer mentioned in 1612 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 16). It would seem that it was the cloth merchant and dyer named Claes Barentsz. who paid a tax of 250 f in 1631, at which time he lived in the St. Anthonyspoort (Kohier, fol. 114, p. 27). It is not clear whether Claes Barentsen who freighted three ships between 1601 and 1608 (one of them with Barent Jansz. Noorman of R 30045) was the cloth merchant or the grain dealer or possibly both (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 184(1983), pp. 326 and 599).

BuyerVolckert Dircksen [Coornhert]
Buyer FamilyCoornhert [or Coorenhardt], Volckert Dircksen
Buyer NotesVolckert Dircksen Coornhert (1583-1636), lived at first in the Regulierspoort then in the Hartenstraet. He married Anneke Brams in 1606 (in the Stadhuis). He was the son of Dirck Clementsz. Coornhert, agent in Oostlandt (who died before 1611). Anneke Brams was the daughter of Pieter Braems, wine dealer in the Warmoesstraet in Ceulen (of R 31430) and of Lijsbeth Jacobs (Elias, Vroedschap, p.31.) In 1606, the year of his marriage, Coornhert bought lots for 7 f. 16 st. in the Haarlem lottery (GAA, 51/50 F 357). Coornhert was involved in the tulip trade from about 1610 until his death in July or early August 1636 (Goldgar, Tulipmani, typescript, pp. 185-6). On 19 July 1611, Jacob Albertsz. (Smeersmouter) had a notary insinuate Volckert Coornhart because he had bought certain flowers and tulips on a certain list. He had failed to pay because the tulips, when they came to flower, were less beautiful than they appeared (or were expected to appear) at the time of the sale in accordance with the list that was shown to Albertsz. He estimated that the value of the flowers and tulips delivered to be half or at least some lesser value compared to the full-valued product. Coornhert had refused arbitration. Albertsz. held him responsible for any loss or damage (NA 357B, fol. 203, Not. W. Cluyt, Extracten). On 26 September 1611, at the request of Volckert Dircksz. Coornhart, Abraham Casteleyn (of R 35076) demanded payment from Jacob Elbertsz. (Albertsz.), who claimed that, two years ealier, he had bought a bulb from Volckert's father, which did not turn out what it was supposed to be. In the mean time, the father had died, and Elbertsz. argued that the payment should be made in full (NA 341, fol. 155, Not. W. Sluyter, Extracten). Coornhert paid a tax of 100 f. in 1631, living on the Singel (Kohier, fol. 14v., p. 5). On 4 October 1634, the notary (Verhey), on the order of Volckerd Dircksz. Coornhart, Reynier van Neck and on behalf of Outger Pietersz. Spiegel (of R 27584) went to the house of the widow of Barent van Someren (of INVNO 634) in the inn Schilt van Vranckrijck and insinuated the widow regarding the consolidation of walls, doors, and posts in the back of the inn, which opened up on the Jonge Roelofsteech (NA 771, Not. Verhey). On 16 April 1627, Volckert Dircx Coornhart and his wife Annetge Braems drew up their testament, naming two children as their heirs. Other heirs were his uncle the dyer Claes Barents (of R 7625) and Dirck van Starren, her nephew. In case the testator were to die first, the testatrix would be obligated to give the children the portraits of their grandfather and grandmother, together with the portrait of her father and half the paitings that their father (presumably Volckert Dircx) will by then have painted. After all the descendants shall have died, the rest of the property would go to the poor. Other heirs on the testator's side were to be Outgert Pietersz. Spiegel (of R 27584) or his descendants, on one hand, and Reynier van Neck and Claertgen van Neck, together, on the other, and on the testatrix's side, her sister Marritgen Braemsdr. and her brother Jan Braemsz. or the descendants of her sister Grietge Braems. The testament was passed in their house on the Keizersgracht in the presence of Claes Wandelman (of R 30408) and Claes Reegers (?) Pontus (NA 857, fol. 1-6, Not. Pieter Rodenburgh). On 19 August 1639, Volckert de Vlamingh and Jan Braems (of R 23694), who was also said to be an heir of Thymen Braems, declared before the Orphan Chamber that, pursuant to an agreement made on 30 July 1639, Dirck, 22, and Jacob, 20, the two (minor) children left by Volckert Dircksz. Corenhart, procreated by Anneken Braems, were entitled to various assets left by Tymen Braem, including an obligation for 743 f. 19 st. Among the heirs were also cited the children of Gertruyd Brams and Cornelis Willemsz. Ouwelandt of Leyden (WK 5073/789). The codicil of the will of Anneken Braems, widow of Volckert Coornhart, dated 1 August 1636, living in the Hartenstraet, stated that she left the retail business (winckel) with the sugar and spices to her son Clement (NA 1045, fol. 104, Not. J. van de Ven). There was also another son of Volckert, named Pieter Volckertsz. Coornhart, born about 1608. He was assisted by his father Volckart Dircksz. Coornhart when he married Grietje Grols, assisted by her mother Grietje Canter, on 3 June 1632 (De Navorscher (1858), p. 316). The son of Pieter Coornhart, named Otto Coornhart, married Margerite Branthout, the daughter of Garbrant Warnaerts Branthout of INVNO 1348. On 8 October 1632, Lenaert Pietersz. Goutappel had notary Hoogebom notify Volckert Dircksz. Coornhert and Pieter Coornhert that they he had failed to pay 960 f. for 14 bolts of Limborg cloth (600 ells, at 32 st. the ell). Pieter Coornhert declared that the money was ready (NA 843, fol. 339, Not. Hoogeboom). On 26 January 1638, Dirck van Wisselt, merchant, 44 (of R 20620), made a deposition at the request of Maria Wouters, widow of Lenart Pietersz. Goutappel, broker during his lifetime (NA 521, Not. Westfrisius).

BuyerDaniel Bisschop
Buyer FamilyBisschop, Daniel
Buyer NotesDaniel Bisschop paid a tax of 18 gulden 15 stuivers in 1631 for his father. At the time he lived on the Nieuwesijts Westervoorburchwal (Kohier, fol. 288, p. 66). In 1625, he lived in de Nes (R 22677). On 26 October 1630, Daniel Bisschop, from Amsterdam, merchant, 32 years of age, assisted by his brother Jacob, was betrothed to Jannetje Schonevels, from Amsterdam, 19, assisted by her godmother Judith Heyndrix and her uncle Norbert Monnicx (?) Schyta (?) (DTB 436/193). Jacob Bisschop and his wife Josina Verbruggen had their daughter Anna baptized in the O.K. on 21 August 1631 in the presence of Daniel Bisschop and Anna Backlan (DTB 6/313). Anna Backlan was the second wife of Abraham Bartholomeusz. Bisschop. On 6 April 1642, Daniel Bisschop and Joanna Schonevelt had their son Abraham baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Marten van Ayton (DTB 42/303). On 10 May 1645, along with Assuerus Sweers (of INVNO 111), Marten van Ayta (Ayton) and Jan Cornelisz. Hasekamp, he collected his share of a house on the Dam valued at 10000 f. (Amstelodamum maandblad 6 (1908), p. 75.) It was probably the sister of Jan Cornelisz. Hasekamp, named Lysbeth Cornelis, who was betrothed to the engraver Willem van der Laegh, 26, on 18 October 1640. He was living on the Rockin and was assisted by his guardian Trojanis de Magistris. She was 25, living on the Keizersgracht and was assisted by Tryntje Claes op de Doelen (Obreen, Obreen 2(1879-1880), p. 163). In his account book for the Begijnhof, Trojanis de Magistris frequently mentions expenditures made on behalf of Jan Conelisz. Hasekamp. Daniel Bisschop must have had some expertise in art matters and he may have been a member of the guild of St. Luke, seeing that he was called upon to appraise the paintings of Jacques van Hoorn and Sophia van den Branden on 20 July 1642 (see the TEXT of R 10, INVNO 110, of Montias1). On 20 January 1654, Daniel Bisschop, coming from the Heregracht, was buried. The sum of 8 f. was paid to the church (DTB 1046/133). For his death inventory, see INVNO 381. His brother Jacob was buried on 27 December 1658 (DTB 1047/26). The inventory of Joanna Schonevelts, widow of Daniel de Bisschop, was taken on 3 December 1654 (INVNO 381).

BuyerSouburch van de vrunden
Buyer FamilySouburch (Gerrit Govertsz. ?)
Buyer NotesOn 16 July 1594, Gerrit Govertsz. Souburch, oud schepen van der Goude, was betrothed to Agneta Jacobs Rawarts, 38 years old, living on the Warmoesstraet (DTB 762A/50). Agneta Rawarts was the daughter of the famous collector and friend of Van Mander, Jacob Rauwaert. She died before 11 November 1622. Gerrit Govertsz. bought lots in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 for 30 f. (144/29 F 1047). On 3 April 1612, the masters of the Orphan Chamber appointed Gerrit Govertsz. Schouburch as guardian over the goods belonging to the son of Claes Rauwaert (his brother-in-law, the son of Jacob Rauwaert) (WK 5073/513). On 16 April 1621, Maria Rauwerts was authorized by the Orphan Chamber to collect such rents as the heirs of Agnieta Rauwerts was entitled to (WK 5073/513, fol. 184vo.) On 12 April 1614, two lots owned by the city (in connection with the expansion of Amsterdam), located in present-day Jordan, were assigned to Gerrit Govertsz. Souburch. On 11 April 1620, Souburch appeared before the aldermen with two masons and declared that they had sold a school teacher in Overschie two plots with opstallen, which were probably those he had acquired in 1614 (Maandblad Amstelodamum 48(1961), p.161). On 22 January 1620, Cornelia van Duyvenlant was betrothed to Jan Buytewegh van Leiden, 29, lord of Nieuwkoop, living in Gouda. She was assisted by her uncle Gerrit Govertsz. Souburch and her aunt Maria Rauwarts. Jan Buytewech was a good acquaintance of Maria Thins, the mother-in-law of Johannes Vermeer (Montias, Vermeer and His Milieu, 1989, p. xx). Gerrit Govertsz. Souburch died on 17 August 1621. On 20 May 1623, Gerrit Govertsz. Souburch passed his testament, in which he named Goswinus van Hal as his testamenteur. Goswinus must have died soon thereafter. Gerrit Govertsz. apparently died on 17 August 1623 (shortly after this auction), leaving as his heirs Jacob Govertsz. and Rutgert Govertsz. Souburch, his brothers, together with the children of Jan Govertsz., Witte Govertsz., Gysbert Govertsz., and Jannetge Goverts, his brothers and sisters (WK 5073/889, fol. 158vo. and foll.) Note that Gerrit Govertsz. Souburch, like Goswynus van der Hal, was Roman Catholic (as was of course Maria Thins).

BuyerFytge Jans van Haerlem, een van de vrunden
Buyer FamilyJans, Fytge (van Haarlem)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a relative of Goswinus van der Hal. On 29 July 1622, Dr. Pieter Michielsz. Ley and the painter David Vinckeboons as testamentary guardians of Griet Jans, brought some assets for Fytgen Jans, the sister of Griet Jans. She may have been the buyer of this lot (WK 5073/789, fol. 280vo). On 20 October 1636, the inventory was taken of the possessions of the late Fytge Jans, midwife, at the request of Hendrick Barentsz. and Jan Jansz. coorendrager (NA 840, Not. Hogheboom). She may also be identical with Fytgen Jans, wife of Jan Jansz. bookbinder, who was named in a procuration by Jan Gerritsz. Verhouttert (of INVNO 1208), married to Helena Kemp, on 2 April 1636 (NA 597, fol. 159, Not. Lamberti).

Buyer FamilyKemp, Hendrick (on the Keisersgracht)
Buyer NotesThe widow of Hendrick Kemp, living on the Keisersgracht, paid a tax of 125 f. It is not known what the patronymic of this Hendrick Kemp was. He is not identical with either Hendrick Barentsz. or Hendrick Aertsz. Kemp who both lived beyond 1631 (see R 25363). Hendrick Kemp may be the individual named Hendrick Kampen who, on 10 March 1627, together with his partner Jacques Sicx (cited in the NOTES to R 27639), came to an agreement with Jean Quesnoy regarding a shipment of opium weighing 204 pounds, which Quesnoy intended to sell in Barbary (NA 661, fol. 112, Not. J. Warnaerts). In 1625, Jan de Quesnoy appeared before the consistory of the Reformed Church. He was apparently suspect of bankruptcy, but he refused to acknowledge it, asseverating that it was only one of his relatives who had threatened him (Roodenburg, Onder het censuur, p. 378).

BuyerJan Basse
Buyer FamilyBasse, Jan (van) (I, de oude)
Buyer NotesThis must be the painter Jan Basse de oude who died in 1636 rather than his son, likewise painter, of the same name, who was born ca. 1611, as emerges from the latter's betrothal record of 4 December 1632, with Jannetje Andries Holloch from Amsterdam, 18 years old (DTB 440/42). Jan Basse I was born in or about 1571, the son of a dyer (a trade that was carried on by his brother Guilliam of R 31003). He bought a building lot from the city of Amsterdam on 6 January 1595. The first known mention of Jan Bassensz. schilder occurred on 26 May 1601 when he witnessed the pre-nuptial contract of Ghijsbert Jansz. Keyser and IJdtgen Warnaersdr., assisted by her father Warnaer Kistgen (NA 4, fol.50vo, Not. Pilorius, Extracten). IJdtgen Warnaersdr. was the sister of the iron monger and potash dealer Isaack Warnaers Kistgen of R 20063. In 1606, Jan Basse I, living on the N.Z. Voorburgwal in de Melckmeyt, bought lots for 12 st. in the Haarlem lottery (GAA 139/28 F 1011). On 19 May 1611, Jan Basse, from Rijssel, schilder, 40 years old, assisted by his father Willem Basse (I), living on the O.Z. Voorburchwal, was betrothed to Kornelia Kieff, 24, assisted by her mother Anna van Liesveld, living on the Koningstraet (in de kerck) (Oud Holland, 3(1885). p. 69.) Kornelia Kieff was the sister of Catharina Kieff who married Israel Gerbier of R 23616 in 1626. Jan Basse I had two sons, Willem Basse II (probably the painter and etcher of that name of R 31003) and Jan Basse II, who married Jannetje Andries Holloch on 26 December 1632. Jan Basse I was buried on 11 November 1636, coming from the Lindengracht. In March 1637, Pieter Jacobsz. Indische Raven (II), guardian of Willem Basse (II) and of Hendrickge Basse, son and granddaughter of Jan Basse (I), both heirs of the latter, received a formal complaint (insinuatie) from the head of the Goldsmiths' guild stating that the sale of gold, silver, and precious stones that they had planned was forbidden by guild regulations. He answered that he would abide by the regulations (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 147). In 1665, the 75-year old painter Jacques de Ville (of R 36770) declared that Jan Basse, father of Willem Basse, had died of the plague (ibid. p. 148). On 19 February 1637 when two journeymen tailors declared at the request of Jannetje Everts, for and in the name of Pieter Jacobsz. Indische Raven II (who organized the 1637 sale and was guardian over Basse's children) that about ten years previously they had heard that a certain woman named Tryn Jans, coming to the house of Jannetje Everts, located behind the Beurse at the sign of the Nieuwe Braderij, had asked how much she rented it for. She had said for 120 f. per year (NA 991, fol.66, Not. J. Bosch). The house had perhaps belonged to Jan Basse I. On 22 June 1640, an accounting was given to the Orphan Chamber of the goods left by Jan Basse (I) and Cornelia Kieft. The assets included a house on the Princengracht, near the Elantstraet where the Arms of France are hanging, another house on the Lelystraet daer de hovenier uijthangt, and 1284 gulden in cash. The accounting was prepared by Pieter Indische Raven II (who was mentioned in the introduction to the sale.) On 23 November 1640, the net sum amounting to 927 f. 9 st. was remitted to Guillam Basse (probably Willem Basse II), the son of Jan Basse de oude and the uncle of the child Henrickge, left by Jan Basse II. Half of the sum was given to Willem Basse de jonge and half to Janneke Andries, the widow of Glaude Woutersz. Berrevelt (whom she had apparently remarried with after the death of Jan Basse II) (WK 5073/789).

Buyer NotesDr. Johan Fonteyn (1575-1628) was the son of the apothecary Thonis Jansz. and the grandson of Dr. Claes Plemp (1525/30-1597) (see the genealogy in Dudok van Heel in Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, Amsterdam, 1998, p. 58). He was a member of the Rederijkerskamer de Egelantier (In Liefde Bloyende) in 1616 (Oud Holland 22(1904), p. 41). He replaced Dr. Sebastiaen Egbertsz. as praelector of the Surgeons' Guild in 1621 (Oud Holland 2(1884), p. 141). In 1629, he made a deposition whence it appears that he also had an apothecary's shop (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933). pp. 489 and 677.) His sons Dr. Nicolaes Fonteyn (of R 19445) and Dr. Barent Jansz. Fonteijn paid taxes of 35 f. and 50 f. respectively (Kohier, fol. 29, p. 8, and fol. 55vo, p. 14). Dr. Jan Fonteyn was portrayed in De anatomische les van Dr. Johan Fonteyn of 1625, which has been preserved, in damaged condition, in Amsterdam's Historisch Museum (A. Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, 1975/1979, p. 103).
