Buyer NotesVarious individuals named Jan Egbertsz. may have been the buyer of this lot, including an uitdraagster of that name and Jan Egbertsz. Bisschop, the brother of the famous Remonstrant Rem Egbertsz. Bisschop. He may also be Jan Eghbertsz. (see the Koopmanshuis that he built at 226 Keisersgracht in 1620, cited in E. van Houten, Grachten,p. 48). Finally he may be the glass maker Jan Egbertsz. who, together with the lutheran predikant Arnoldus Glaserus, bought a house on the Warmoesstraat on 14 February 1619 (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat? 1968, 36/5).

BuyerFrans van Huffelen schilder
Buyer FamilyHuffelen (Uffelen), Frans (Francois)
Buyer NotesFrans van Huffelen (Uffelen) was a painter. He was apparently born in Antwerp where he was noted in 1609 and 1616-1617. On 14 June 1624, Franchoys van Uffelen, painter, appeared in Amsterdam and declared that a painting representing the History of Uppsigge (Psyche), which, according to the auction masters, was an original painted by Wenceslas Coebergher, was in fact a copy, since he had seen the original in the house of Pieter Bruegel in Antwerp (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, 1997, p. 390). On 1 October 1624, Francisco van Uffelen and Maijke Claes had their son Francisco baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Henrickje Douwes (DTB 40/174). On 6 July 1628, Fransoijs van Huffelen and Marijtje Jacobs (perhaps his second wife) had their daughter Marija baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Abraham Govertsz. Knol of R 24763 and Susanna Ryckening (?) (DTB 6/210). He lived in the Barndesteech in de Robijn in 1625 (R 32650) and on the corner of the Rosestraet near the Schans in 1628 (R 27555). He was buried in the N.K. on 24 November 1634, coming from the Herengracht (Briels, ibid.) It may have been his son of the same name who bought several lots of drawings, prints, and paintings at an Antwerp auction dated 16 April 1657. The son may also have been an art dealer (Duverger, Antwerpse kunstinventarissen 7(1993), pp. 325-325).

BuyerAllert Garbrantsz. provoost
Buyer FamilyGarbrantsz., Allert (provoost, Schilt)
Buyer NotesAllert Garbrantsz. was the son of the merchant Garbrand Allertsz. Schilt who signed a shipping contract in 1594, and of Trijntgen Allerts (Elias, Vroedschap, p.295 and Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 178(1981), p. 18). He was said to be 42 years old (born circa 1592) in a deposition dated 29 December 1629 (NA 991, film 1220, fol.16, Not. Jan Bosch). Allert Garbrantsz., provoost, paid a tax of 10 f. in 1631, at which time he was living on the South side of the Haarlemmersstraet (Kohier, fol. 53, p. 13). In the next year, 1632, he had a house built for him on the Keisersgracht, called de Oyevaer (E. van Houten, Grachten, p. 63). He was married, first?, to to Ael Menderts Huydecooper, later to Jannetje Cornelis, who survived him. He was provoost (a type of sergeant who kept discipline in the company and noted attendance). in the company of Pieter Dircksz. Haaselaer. He was portrayed as provoost of that company in 1623 (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, 1975/1979, p. 354.) He also bought music books in the present sale. On 2 September 1636, Allert Garbrantsz. provoost, and a sailmaker named Rijck Tonissen guaranteed a loan made out to Willem Jansz. Boet (NA 642, film 4953, Notary Sybrant Cornelissen). On 1 April 1637, Tryntje Allerts, widow of Garbrant Elbertsz. Schilt, affirmed that the house on the Nieuwe Capellesteech presently belonging to Albert Gerbrantsz. Schilt (bought by him two years ago), had been leased for many years for 170 f. a year (NA 991, fol. 124, Not. J. Bosch). He died before 1640 when his son Garbrand Ellertsz. Schilt was betrothed and declared that both his parents were dead. Allert Gerbrantsz. had apparently remarried with Jannetje Cornelis, who appeared as his widow in an agreement with Barthout Andriesz. Sael (of R 27228) concerning a house the Golden Herring on the N.D., which was to be kept by Sael. The house seems to have been inherited from Cornelis N.N. (married to Dieuwer Symons), who was perhaps the father of Gierte and Jannetje Cornelis, the respective wives of Barthout Sael and Allert Gerbrantsz. (NA 997, film 1882, Notary Gerrit Coren). On 28 May 1643, Jannetje Cornelis, widow of Albert Gerbrantsz. Schilt, paid Barthout Andriesz. Sael 1,000 f. for various parts of the house the Herring that she owed him (ibid.)

BuyerPieter Adriaensz. Raep
Buyer FamilyRaep, Pieter Adriaensz.
Buyer NotesPieter Adriaensz. Raep (1581-1666) was lieutenant of the militia in 1620, captain in 1640. He died unmarried on 1 March 1666 (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p. 294). He was the son of Adriaen Pietersz. Raep, living in 1590 in the Warmoesstraet in 's Hertogenbosch who died in Amsterdam in 1647. Adriaen Pietersz. married Marij Claes Cloeck on 12 December 1580. He invested 1,500 f. in the first subscription to the V.O.C. and paid a tax of 1,270 f. in 1631 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 127). Pieter Adriaensz. was the brother of Willem Adriaensz. Raep. He was thesaurier extraordinaris of Amsterdam in 1631 when he paid a tax of 60 f. He also paid a tax of 11 f. 10 st. for the heirs of Trijn Claes Cloecken, who was presumably his aunt (Kohier, fol. 4, p. 2 and fol. 303vo., p. 68). Trijn Claes Cloeck was married to Claes Seijs, cited in R 20357. On 15 October 1662, Pieter Adriaensz. Raep bought from the apothecary Abram Francem a house on the Egelantiersgracht for 4,000 f. (Oud Holland 1(1883), p. 252). Abram Francen, portrayed by Rembrandt about 1655, was the guardian of the painter's daughter Cornelia. After Raep's death, an inventory was taken of his possessions on 20 October 1666 (NA 2606, film 2646, Not. Grijp).

BuyerDirck Harmensz. in de St. Annestraet
Buyer FamilyHarmensz. (or Hermansz.), Dirck
Buyer NotesAccording to N. de Roever (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 191), Dirck Harmensz. was an apprentice painter working for Cornelis van der Voort as early as 1612 (when he was 16 years old) (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 191). According again to De Roever (ibid.), Dirck Harmensz. is identical with the lywaet (linnen) packer whose betrothal follows. On 27 January 1623, Dirck Harmensz., lywaet packer, 27 years old, assisted by his mother Anna Harmens, living on the St. Annedwarsstraet, was betrothed to Kornelijn Jacobs Spieringx ,24, assisted by her father Jacob Spieringh and her mother Margarita Heyndricks (DTB 427/400). Kornelijn Jacobs was the sister of Annetge Spieringh who married the painter Gillis d'Hondecoeter in 1628 (R 20898). When Dirck Harmensz. died in August 1640, he had been residing in the St. Annadwarsstraet. He left his widow Lyntje (Cornelia) Spierinck a collection of 411 paintings, including some of his own, and many prints and drawings. He still owned paint, brushes, and other painting instruments (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, pp. 305-6.)

Buyeribid [Arent Meurens] in de Warmoesstraet int huys van C. van Campen
Buyer FamilyMeurs (Meurens), Arent
Buyer NotesArent Meurs paid a tax of 40 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the Warmoesstraet, as he did when he bought this lot (Kohier, fol. 104, p. 25). On 7 October 1631, Dirck Jansz., sworn broker, 43, declared at the request of Hendrick Gerritsz. van Haarlem that at beginning of October 1627 the petitioner (Hendrick Gerritsz.) had bought at the house of Arent Meurs some linen goods (Coelveltse lijwaet). They could not agree on the price, so the delivery did not take place. Meurs had said he did not know the petitioner (Hendrick Gerritsz.) (NA 842, Not. Hoogeboom). On Cornelis van Campen, who indeed lived on the Warmoesstraet, see R 31987. On 13 February 1643, Arent Meurs and 10 other wholesale linen dealers, signed a contract whereby they would only sell Wesphalian linens on condition that they had signed a debt recognition (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 144(1974), pp. 361-2). Arent Meurs may have been the father of the merchant and poet Jan Meures (1604-1672) who was a director of the Amsterdam Schouwburg from 1644/45 to 1647/49 (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 72(1981), p. 42). In a deposition dated 8 November 1637, Arent Meurs, merchant, was said to be 67 years old (NA 1418, Not. C. Touw). On 10 January 1639, Hendrick Barentsz. and Trajanis de Magistris insinuated Arent Meurs for failure pay a letter of exchange with a face value of 6,000 f. His wife explained that he was out of town (NA 1498, Not. Oly).

BuyerCornelis Gerritsz. Schellinger
Buyer FamilySchellinger, Cornelis Gerritsz.
Buyer NotesCornelis Gerritsz. Schellinger was born in Utrecht in 1595, the son of Gerrit Schellinger de oude (1565-aft. 1607) and of his second wife Niesken Cornelis Schouten of Weesp. Cornelis Schellinger de oude was first married to Marij Hillebrants (before 1588). Their daughter Edel Cornelis Schellinger was the second wife of Philips Metsu(e) I (marriage 1604) (on whom, see the NOTES to R 27367) (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p. 301). On 15 April 1616, Cornelis Gerritsz. Schellinger (I) was betrothed to Cornelia Cornelisdr., 21. She was the daughter of Cornelis Jorisz. and Grietge Willems Backer (DTB 420/135). Cornelia Cornelisdr. was the sister of Willem Backer of R 7697. Cornelis Gerritsz. Schellinger later settled in Weesp where he became burgomaster (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p. 301). He was the nephew of Cornelis (Cornelisz.) Schellinger de oude (1555-1635), sugar refiner, and the cousin of Hillebrand Schellinger (the son Cornelis Cornelisz.) who was probably the buyer of R 20494. Cornelis Cornelisz. Schellinger signed the anti-Remonstrant petition of 1628 complaining of the appointment of Jan Claesz. Vlooswijck to head the militia (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 1, p. 501). In 1613, Cornelis Schellinger de jonge, the son of Cornelis Schellinger de oude cited above, was only 18 years old at the time he and Hillebrant Schellinger subscribed for 19,500 f. in the V.O.C. insurance contract (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 81). On 27 July 1638, Cornelis Gerritsz. van der Scheelingh, schipper, drew up a freighting contract (NA 696A, Not. J. Warnaerts). In 1643, Cornelis Gerritsz. Schellinger contracted, with several other businessmen, for the purchase of a large number of heads of cattle imported from Germany (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 144(1974), p. 366). In 1631, Cornelis Gerritsz. Schellinger paid a tax of 350 f., at which time he was living on the North side of the Molenstraet (Kohier, fol. 57, p. 14). It is not known whether the individual named Cornelis Schellinger who was portrayed as a schutter in the Company of Captain Jonas Witsen, by an unknown painter around 1616 (Blankert, Historisch Museum, p. 349) was Cornelis Gerritsz. Schellinger or Cornelis Cornelisz. Schellinger de Oude, cited above, but the former is more probable as the older man would have been a little over 60 years old in 1616, which would in principle have barred him from serving in the militia (Poelwijk, In Dienste vant Suyckerbacken, p. 257). There was also a Cornelis Schellinger who was one of the Regents of the Tuchthuis in 1621 who is likely to have been Cornelis Cornelisz. Schellinger de oude.

BuyerJan Cornelisz. Kick
Buyer FamilyKick, Jan Cornelisz.
Buyer NotesJan Cornelisz. Kick, cloth merchant, was married to Dieuwer Gerrits when he had his son Cornelis, the future painter, baptized in the O.K. on 28 November 1627 in the presence of Willem Kick and Jannetje Jans (DTB 6/191). On 1 December 1630, Jan Cornelisz. Kick and his wife Dieuwertje Gerrits had their daughter Geertruijt baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Willempje Simaus(?), Pieter Jansz. Bartring and Jan Bartringh (DTB 6/290). Jan Bartring is not known to have bought any works of art at Orphan Chamber auctions, but he did buy two copper chandeliers for f. 2:10:-- at the present sale, at which time he lived on the St. Annstraet. On Jan Bartringh, see also the NOTES to R 36237. Jan Cornelisz. Kick was the son of Cornelis Willemsz. Kick and of Jannetje Jans (cited above) who had their son Elbert baptized in the O.K. on 30 January 1605 (DTB 438/15). On 10 January 1598, Cornelis Willemsz. Kick, from Breda, 25, having lived 6 years on the N.Z. Achterburchwal, assisted by his father Willem Anthonisz. Kick, was betrothed to Jannetje Jansdr., 26, living in the Nieustadt by de Heypoort, assisted by her parents Jan Albertsz. and [...] Jans (DTB 408/283). Jan Cornelisz. Kick signed a petition of Counter-Remonstrants complaining against the excessive influence of Remonstrants in the militia (and in particular of the appointment of Jan Claesz. Vlooswijck) in the militia (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 1, p. 501). Cornelis (Willemsz.) Kick was buried on 25 July 1636 and Jannetje Jans, wife of Cornelis Willemson Kick, on 7 June 1640 (DTB 1045/84vo). Jan Cornelisz. Kick was the brother of Willem Cornelisz. Kick (the witness cited above), who made lackered furniture, and the brother of Elbert Kick (see above). He was also the cousin of the painter Simon Kick. Jan Cornelisz. Kick bought music books and a wind instrument at the present sale (see NOTES to R 20194). On 26 February 1633, Henrick van de Sande and Jan Cornelisz. Kick, both merchants, dealing in English goods, declared at the request of Pieter Seullin (probably of INVNO 1206), likewise merchant, that the cloth imported from England is called English serge and is so designated, both coming in and going out, by the Office for Convoys and Licenses (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 144(1974), p.8). Jan Cornelisz. Kick must have remarried after the death of Dieuwer Gerrits since he was said to be widower of Grietge Cornelis van Limburgh on 13 September 1635, on which date he made a declaration with his brother Elbert (NA 597, fol. 86-7, Not. Lamberti). This was only about five months after he had his son Cornelis baptized on 27 March 1635 with his wife Diewertge Gerrits (DTB 41/371). On 27 November 1637, Joannes Georgij, predikant in Soutermeer, named his cousin Simon Kick, painter, to request an amplification of the inventory of his stepmother Tryn Claes, widow of his father Joris Jansz. (NA 598, Not. Lamberti). On 10 July 1643, Symon Kick acknowledged owing his neef Jan Cornelisz. Kick 1050 f. (Bredius, Künstler-inventare p.31 of Nachträge). On Willem Cornelisz. Kick, see also the NOTES to R 29291.

Buyer FamilyLaurensz., Philips
Buyer NotesOn 25 November 1622, Philips Laurensz., apotheker, 21, assisted by his mother Maritgen Philips, living op de oude glashuis, was betrothed to Trijntje Jacobs (Blauenhelm), 20, assisted by Aeltje Jacobs, her mother, living on the Zeedijck (DTB 427/331). Maritgen Philips, married to the book publisher Laurens Jacobsz., who died in 1603, used the family name Boom. Philips Laurensz., the brother of the predikant Jacobus Laurentius (of R 23781) was the brother-in-law of Jacob Jacobsz. Blaeuenhelm of R 20623. In 1631, Jacobus Laurentius and Maritje Philips each paid a tax of 60 f. (they were listed one below the other in the Kohier (fol. 6 and 7 vo., p.3). Aeltje Jacobs Seeu, the mother of Trijntje Jacobs, was the wife of Jacob Willemsz., cloth merchant on the Nieuwendijck. Jacob Willemsz., in turn, was the son of the organist Willem Aertsz. and the brother-in-law of the organist Willem Jansz. (born in Haarlem), who married Jacob's sister Haesge (NA 362, film 6404, 9 November 1618 and Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 299). Trijntje Jacobs was the sister of Jacob Jacobsz. Blaeuhelm, likewise cloth merchant (of R 20623), who was married to Trijntje Claes. Trijntje Jacobs and Hendrick Laurensz., who was probably Philips Laurensz.'s brother, were witnesses at the baptism of Aeltjen, the daughter of Jacob Jacobsz. Blaeuhelm and Trijntge Claes on 18 September 1625 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 408 and DTB 6/122). In 1632, Philips Laurensz. was a regent of the Oude-mannen-en-vrouwenhuis (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 307). In 1640, the year of his death, he was portrayed by Claes Moyaert, together with four other regents and two regentessen of this institution (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, p. 210). Philips Laurensz. was an apothecary until about 1633 when he leased the soap-boiling works (zeeperij) de twee Cronen on the Damrak. In 1637, he was called zeepzieder and merchant and lived in de zon on the Nieuwen Dijck (R 20594). In 1639, he bought de Prophet Jonas from the Deijman family for 10,000 f. After his death in 1640, his widow Trijntje Jacobsdr. Blauwenhaen (1602-1668) continued his soap-boiling business (S.A.C. Dudok van Heel, Jaarboek Amstelodamum, 83(1991), p. 80).
