Buyeridem [Jan Facijn op de Keysersgracht]
Buyer FamilyFacijn (Fassin), Jan (II?)
Buyer NotesMonsieur Jean de Fassin (I) assisted Guillame van de Put upon his betrothal to Jenne Poulle on 1 September 1599 (DTB 409/55). In November 1628, Jan Fassin (I) and his wife Femmetje Wolters had their daughter Anna baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Anna Fassin (DTB 40/478). Jan Fassin I was buried on 7 November 1628, Femmetje Wolters, on 27 February 1647 (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p. 516). Their daughter, Anne Marie Fassin, who lived from 1628 to 1665, married Michiel Pauw, Ridder, in 1652. Jan Fassyn and Femmetje Wolters lived on the Keysersgracht (Elias, Vroedschap, pp. 195, 516). His precise address (see R 23647) was in de Orangien Appel op de Keysersgracht bij de Lelijsluijs. After the death of Femmetje Wolters, Jan Fassin II was married to Anna Lienerts or Lenaerts (perhaps a sister of Hans Lenertsz. of the present inventory). On 15 January 1636, the honorable Anna Lienerts, widow of Johan Fassin, named a correspondent to collect money for her in Cologne (NA 521, film 6505, Not. Westfrisius). On 1 February of the same year, she transferred to her cousin Pieter Lenertsz., the legitimate son of her brother Paulus Lenertsz., preacher in Cologne, a part of a house and of an estate named den Elsbach (ibid.) The post mortem inventory of Juff. Anna Lenaerts, widow of Jan Fassin, was taken on 6, 8, 14, and 17 June 1647. It contained a number of paintings (none of which could be matched with those that Fassin bought at WK auction). Among other works of art: a portrait of Jan Fassin and his two children evaluated at f. 72 (NA 565A, Not. Westfrisius). Maria Fassin, the daughter of Jan Fassin and Anna Lenaerts, married Jan Sandra II, son of Jan Sandra I (of INVNO 281) and of Susanna de Marez I (whose marriage took place in 1608). Given the connection with the Lenaerts family, it is probable that the buyer was Jan Fassin II. Jan Fassin II was the brother of Pieter Fassin, married to Geertruyd Wolters, the sister of Femmetje Wolters, cited in R 1135 of Montias1.

Buyer FamilyHaer, Albert ter
Buyer NotesOn 20 December 1620, Albert ter Haer was a witness to the baptism of Abraham, son of Michiel Mercijn (of R 7659) and of Willempje Jans (DTB 6/160). Albert ter Haer, goldsmith, and Anna Verheijen (Verheijden ?) had their child Pauwels baptized on 2 November 1628 in the presence of Adriaen ter Haer and Heltjen Joosten (DTB 6/221). Anna Verheijden (Verheijden) was probably the sister of Janneken van der Heijden, the wife of Pieter ter Haer of R 21042. Pieter was either the brother of Albert ter Haer or his nephew. If Adriaen ter Haer is identical with the silversmith of R 18942, he was only 15 years old at the time. Adriaen, son of Cornelis ter Haer, was almost certainly a nephew of Albert ter Haer, as well as of David ter Haer (of R 18944) and of Abraham ter Haer. Albert ter Haer, silversmith, paid of a tax of 10 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the West side of the Warmoesstraet (Kohier, fol. 206, p. 47)

BuyerJacques de Clerck op de Oude Biscuytmarct
Buyer FamilyClerck, Jacques de
Buyer NotesThere are at least two candidates for the buyer of this lot (and of five lots bought by Jacques de Clercq on the Old Biscuit Martket on the O.Z. Voorburchwal). The first was Jacques de Clercq II, born in Haarlem in 1598/9, the son of Jacques de Clercq I, born in Gent, and of Passchijntge Grijspeert. He was a merchant of textiles and of potash. He was first married in 1619 with Sara Pieters van Middeldonck. On 30 November 1621, Jacques de Clercq's brother-in-law Jan Jansz. de Witte declared that he had bought two (bolts?) of sanette (a type of cloth) from Jacques de Clercq, likewise merchant in Amsterdam (AVL NA 119.79, cited by Daan de Clerq in his unpublished genealogy of the De Clercq family). On 28 December 1636, Jacques de Clercq, from Haarlem, living in Haarlem, widower of Sara Pieters, was betrothed to Elsje Moens, 34, assisted by her father Anthonij Moens, living on the Heeregracht (DTB 673/153). Anthony Moens was a well-known Amsterdam merchant (cited in the NOTES of R 31920). Her mother was Margaretha Linden (widow of Claes Heerden). Soon after the marriage he opened an account at the Wisselbank in Amsterdam. On 4 January 1639, Jan Jacobsz. Hop, merchant (cited in the NOTES to R 27227) declared that four or five weeks ago Jacques de Clercq had been in his house and that the conversation had turned to the money that he, De Clercq, owed to the heirs of Anthony Moens. He, De Clercq, said he would go for a walk and that one could talk to Elsgen Moens (his wife) about it (NA 419A, fol. 13, Not. Jacob and Nicolaes Jacobsz.) On 15 January 1639, Johannes van de Perre (the son of Balthasar van de Perre of R 8218), 30, temporarily in this city, declared that he had tried to bring Jacques de Clercq to a compromise (concerning the inheritance from Anthony Moens), but De Clercq wouldn't go along. De Clercq did speak with his brother Dirck van de Perre (also cited in the NOTES to R 8218), one of the co-heirs of Moens (NA 419A, fol. 52, Not. Jacob and Nicolaes Jacobsz.) Jacques de Clerck migrated from Haarlem, apparently for the second time, in 1639 (but he of course may have bought lots at Amsterdam auctions before that date). Jacques de Clercq was the executor of the will of his brother Pieter de Clercq of INVNO 404, dated 14 May 1649. He was also (less certainly) the executor of the will of Cornelia Venators (of INVNO 203). He was the brother of Lucas de Clercq, the husband of Feijntje van Steenkiste, the sister of Christina van Steenkiste of INVNO 109. The family of Jacques de Clercq was Mennonite (bio-data kindly supplied by Anne Goldgar, on the basis of genealogical research carried out by Daan de Clercq). On 14 November 1637, a certain Pieter Gerritsz. had a notary notify Jacques de Clercq in Haarlem for failing to deliver bulbs that he (De Clercq) had sold him (Not. E. van Bosvelt, cited in Posthumus, Economisch-Historisch Jaarboek 13(1927), p.80). The second candidate for the purchase of lots at WK sales was the wool cloth worker Jacques de Clercq. On 28 October 1617, Jacques de Clerq, trypwercker (a type of wool cloth worker), assisted by his mother Anna de Clerck, living in the Coningsgracht, was betrothed to Jannetje Roberts, from Breda, 21, living in the Raemsteech (DTB 422/48). He apparently remarried with Trijntge Sijmons with whom he had his son baptized on 3 May 1643 in the presence of Jacob Basson, Sara de Klerck, and Sonneken Hendricx (DTB 93/31). Sara de Klerck, daughter of Anna de Clerck, was Jacques's sister. She was married to Cornelis van Meulenbroeck of R 20311. It is not known which of the two the following documents refer to. Jacques de Clerck signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. (This would be consistent with the religion of the Haarlem candidate who was Mennonite, but it does not exclude the second). A man named Jacques le Clerc buried a child in the Z.K. on 23 April 1630. In February 1645, Jacques de Clerck and company signed a petition, along with numerous other Amsterdam merchants, calling for the enforcement of currency regulations issued in 1622 (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken R.G.P. 59(1925) p.90). Neither the potash merchant nor the wool worker is known to have lived on the Biscuit market on the O.Z. Voorburchwal. Until the address of at least one of the two candidates has been ascertained, it will not be possible to tell for certain which of the two was the buyer of this and other lots bought by the individual living on the Old Biscuit Market. In my view, the more likely candidate is the Haarlem-born merchant.

BuyerHendrick Calaber
Buyer FamilyCalaber, Hendrick
Buyer NotesOn 24 March 1611, Hendrick Calaber, from Antwerp, living in the verwerijen, zydereeder (silk spinner or winder), 24, assisted by his uncle Hans van den Dorpe, was betrothed to Elisabeth de la Vigne, 22, living in de Nes, assisted by her father Mr. de la Vigne, French predikant (DTB 415/20). On 1 November 1620, Heinrick Calaber and Lijsbet Lavigne had their daughter Anneke baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Anneke Calabers, Flips Beuns, Abresiel (?) de la Vigne, and Janneken van den Dorpe (DTB 5/333). Hendrick Calaber was living in the cleijn St. Joris steech in 1631 when he paid a tax of 20 f. (Kohier, fol. 252 vo., p. 58). On 10 July 1636, Andries Pels and Andries ter Welbanck, merchants, declared at the request of the eersame Jan Webster, likewise merchant, that they had gone, at the request of Jan Webster and of Hendrick Calaber, zydereeder, to the house of Calaber where they had inspected a bale of silk (NA 695A, film 4981, Not. J. Warnaerts). On Andries Pels, see the NOTES to R 7591. In 1639 or the beginning of 1640, Francois Finson (of R 25311) and Henrick Calaber rented out a house on the Calverstraet to the painter Jan Miense Molenaer for 450 f. a year (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 13). On 8 August 1641, Henrick Calaber, zydereeder, 54, testified concerning the poor quality of silk that had been delivered to him (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p. 311-2). In 1643, Hendrick Calaber joined a number of merchants in calling for the stabilization of the currency (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P., 59(1925), p. 85). He was buried in the F.K. on 11 July 1648 (DTB 1130/123).

BuyerWolpert Webber
Buyer FamilyWebber, Wolpert (Wolf, Wolphert)
Buyer NotesWolphert Webber (or Weber) was a prominent wine wholesaler in Amsterdam at least since 1613, when he was said to be 50 years old (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P.78(1933), p.70). On 15 June 1608, Wolfert Webber and his wife Agniesjen Kocks had their daughter Angnieta baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Willem Selijns, Apolonia Sprenckhuysen, and Saertjen Kocks (DTB 4/245). Apolonia Sprenckhuysen was the wife of Jan Jansz. Selijns I (1566-1624). Willem Selijns (I), silk cloth dealer, was their son, born on 24 February 1596, who married, first, Anna Rijckaert, in 1621, and, second, in 1626, Susanna van Couwenbergh (INVNO 1197). He was the nephew of Willem Selijns I (of INVNO 956), married to Maria Abrahams, whose son was baptized in the N.K. on 25 October 1598 (DTB 38/681). Agniesjen Kocks was the daughter of Hendrick Jansz. Cocx and of Niesgen Selyns. Hendrick Jansz. Cocx, in turn, was the nephew of Maria Cocx (or Cocqs) of the present inventory. In 1631, Wolpher Webber was living on the Heeregracht when he paid a tax of 400 f. together with his children (Kohier, fol. 305vo, p. 70). He died in 1640 owning more debts than he had assets (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P.144(1974), p. 271). Webber invested 300 f. in V.O.C. shares (he was one of the seven businessmen of German origin who did so) (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 173). For his death inventory, see INVNO 309. The tolleneers he bought at this sale may be identical with twee tollenaers in his death inventory.
