BuyerCornelis Meulenbroeck
Buyer FamilyMeulenbroeck, Cornelis (van)
Buyer NotesOn 3 May 1614, Cornelis Carelsz. van Meulenbroeck, from Antwerp, dyer, 33 years old, living in the Verweryen, assisted by his mother Janneken Cleuter was betrothed to Sara de Clerck (signs Cler), assisted by her mother Anna de Klerck (DTB 418/75). On 14 February 1620, Cornelis Meulenbroek and Sara le Cler had their son Charles baptized in the Wa.K. in the presence of Jan Sandra le jeune (II). husband of Dingnom Bravers (DTB 130/98). Sara de Clerk was the sister of Jacques de Clerck, married to Trijntge Sijmons, who had their son Jacob baptized ion 3 May 1643 (in the presence of Sara de Clerck) (DTB 93/31). This Jacques de Clerck may possibly have been the buyer at R 20311. Jan Sandra II, son of Jan Sandra I, was a rich merchant, probably in silk cloth (see Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 205). By 6 September 1627, he seems to have remarried with Maria Fassin (NA 661, film 354). On 23 November 1627, Nicolas Cocqus (of R 20336), in the name of Maria Faseyn, wife of Jan Sandra, brought money to the Orphan Chamber on behalf of Jan Sandra (presumably III) (WK 5073/789). Jan Sandra I was born in Doornik and was first noted in Amsterdam in 1583. He died in 1624 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 313). On 27 August 1625, Cornelis van Meulenbroeck, dyer, set up a company with Lucas Alleys to create a verwerij to dye grofgreijnen, boratten, damasten and other fabrics (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 580). In 1631 Meulenbroeck paid a tax of 30 f, at which time he was living on the Verwersgracht (as were most other dyers) (Kohier, fol. 225, p. 52). He must have died shortly afterwards, since his widow, who was apparently carrying on his black-dyeing (swartverwerij) business, was mentioned on 15 May 1632 (Van Dillen, op.cit. p.801). On 7 June 1635, Sara de Clerck, assisted by her guardian Frans Brouwer, appeared before the Orphan Chamber on behalf of her two children, Anne, 12, and Jacob, 9, whose late father was [left blank] Meulenbroeck, dyer (WK 5073/789). Sara de Clerck remarried with Pieter Pietersz. Enckels in July 1637 (DTB 443/389, betrothal dated 27 June).

BuyerCoenraet de Wilde chirurgijn
Buyer FamilyWilde, Coenraet de (III ?)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a surgeon. He was probably the son of Coenraet de Wilde de jonge of R 30051. He is probably not identical with Mr. Coenraet who paid a tax of 150 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the South side of the St. Pieters kerckhoff (Kohier, fol. 240vo, p. 55). Mr. Coenraedt, surgeon, had the family name Odendael. He was said to be 38 in a deposition of 10 July 1636 (NA 991, fol. 59, Not. J. Bosch). On 8 January 1625, the goods left by Jannetge Jans, wife of Mr. Coenraat, chirurgijn, living bij de Varckensluijs, were sold at auction by the Orphan Chamber (WK 573/950). On 16 June 1636, the merchant Daniel du Gardin passed his testament in the presence of Coenradt de Wilde, surgeon (NA 642, fol. 182 and 182vo). Catharina Odendael, the daughter of Coenradt Odendael, signed a pre-nuptial contract with Henrick Molshoeck on 3 August 1643 (see the details in the NOTES to R 23406).

BuyerJan Symonsz. de Vries
Buyer FamilyVries, Jan Symonsz. de
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Jan Symonsz. de Vries, was perhaps the brother of Jacob Symonsz. de Vries, a well-known merchant and soap maker (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p.287 etc.) and of Seger Symonsz. de Vries. Jacob, 59, and Seger, 54, appeared in a deposition with Frederick Abbeken, 61, made at the request of Machtelt Jacobs on various members of her family (NA 694B, Not. J. Warnaerts). Jacob Simonsz. de Vries was portrayed by Thomas de Keyser (information kindly provided by Ann Adams).
