BuyerDieuwer Jans
Buyer FamilyJans, Dieuwer
Buyer NotesThe buyer, who bought lots at Orphan Chamber sales from 1617 to 1624, may have been an uitdraagster (as suggested by Hilde van Wijngaarden in the notes to her Scriptie). But she is more likely to be identical with Dieuwertje Jans van Marcken who was also a buyer at auction (R 30394). Note that Dieuwertje Jans, the buyer of R 26664) bought a leeuw van Marcken and is very probably identical with Dieuwertje van Marcken. It will be assumed, rather arbitrarily, that all lots bought by Dieuwer Jans and Dieuwertje Jans were bought by Dieuwertje Jans van Marcken of R 30394.

BuyerNiclaes Cocques [crossed out: Adriaen Hendricksz.]
Buyer FamilyCocques (or Cocque, Cocqu, Cocku), Niclaes (I)
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Niclaes Cocqes (I), born in Middelburg, the son of Lambrecht Cocqu, was 21 when he was betrothed to Anna Gabry, daughter of the late Jean Gabry and of Isabeau Baligan, 18 years old, on 18 August 1607 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p.149). He was a cloth merchant and importer of French silks in Amsterdam at least since 1616. Jean Gabry was a cloth merchant, born in Doornik, who spent some time in Utrecht, before migrating to Amsterdam. (For details on his earlier career, see R 516 of Montias1). Isabeau Balligan became a cloth merchant after her husband's death (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 301). Niclaes Cocqu(es) and the widow of Jean Gabry had a joint account at the Wisselbank in 1609 and 1611 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 149). Nicolas Cocques and Anna Gabry passed their testament on 22 December 1616 (NA 613, film no. 332). In 1617, Nicolaes Cocque (I) witnessed the wedding contract of Anne Leschebon, the sister of Jean Leschebon of R 29988, in his capacity as a deacon of the Waalse Kerck (Gelderblom, op. cit. p. 212). On 9 April 1626, Nicolaes Cocques appeared before the Orphan Chamber on behalf of his four children with the late Anna Gabri (WK 5073/789). He remarried with Gijsbrechtje Wouters. On 26 December 1634, the couple had their daughter Anna Maria baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Cornelis Jansz. Bort (Boot?) (DTB 41/354). On 30 November 1636, they had their daughter Clara baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Willem van Houten, Daniel Jansz. van Beuningen (the auctioneer of the W.K.), Maria van Houten, and Maritgen Pas, widow of Brachten van Hoogendorp (DTB 7/112). On 6 September 1640, they had their son Lambertus baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Pieter Coccus living in Delft, and Grietge Harmens, widow of Pieter Jansz. Coninck (former tax farmer), cited in the NOTES to R 26804 (DTB 7/261). Pieter Jansz. Coninck, from Dordrecht, 24, assisted by his mother Aeltjen Jans, was betrothed to Grietje Hermans on 23 November 1613 (DTB 417/274). Nicolaes Cocques I was frequently named as guardian of orphan children by the Orphan Chamber. One of his children, Nicholaes Cocques de jonge (II), was cited in a document of 29 December 1635 (NA 477, Not. Palm Mathijs). On Adriaen Hendricksz., who may have been underbidder for this lot, see R 36687.
