BuyerJan Reij
Buyer FamilyReij (Raije), Jan
Buyer NotesOn 18 October 1624, Jan Reij, from Antwerp, 39 years old, living behind the Nieuwe Kerk, was betrothed to Barber Schuyl, widow of Willem van Solt (for the last two years), who was assisted by her mother Anna (van) Panhuys. He signed Jan Raije (DTB 429/263). Barber Schuyl's father was named Willem Schuyl. Her brother Wijnant (cited in R 32475) married Maria Bartolotti, the sister of the rich merchant Jan Baptista Bartolotti, on 23 January 1629 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 387). After the death of Willem van Solt, the brother of Hans van Solt de jonge of R 21567, Hans van Solt de oude (of R 29281); Hans van Solt de jonge; Arnout Straet (cited below); Coenraet Coeymans himself (of INVNO 1251), the brother of Casper Coeymans of R 31693; and Daniel de la Bistrate I, all uncles (by marriage) of the children were named guardians of Barbara van Schuyl's daughter, on 14 September 1622 (WK5073/513, fol. 6vo). Barber Schuyl had two sisters named Marie, married to Coenrad Coymans, and Margriet (cited above), married to Daniel de la Bistrate I (see the latter's testament, cited in the TEXT of R 148 of Montias1). After the death of Margriet Schuyl, Coenradt Coymans and Arnold Straet were named guardians of her children on 3 July 1619 (WK 5073/513, fol. 176). On 14 February 1622, Barbara Schuyl, assisted by Arnolt Straet, Coenraet Coymans, and Daniel de la Bistrate, presented her daughter Elisabeth, 2 years old, before the Orphan Chamber, whose father was the late Willem van Solt. She brought 3,800 f. on her daughter's behalf, pursuant to an accord made with her father-in-law Hans van Solt de oude, passed in July of the previous year (WK 5073/789). On August 7 and 28, 1637, Michiel van de Blockry, Cornelis Nuyts (cited in the NOTES to R 25452), Gillis van den Bogaert (cited in the NOTES to R 7693), and Hans van Gistele, all sugar refiners and merchants, together with Pieter de Loo (cited in the NOTES to R 7693), Cornelis Wilmerdoncx (cited in the NOTES to R 7616), Pasqual and Isack Rodriques, all sworn brokers, made a deposition at the request of sr. Jean Raye, likewise merchant, concerning the price courant of mascavado sugar in Amsterdam in 1636 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 144(1974), p.163). In 1631, Jan Reij, living on the Achterburchwal, West side, paid a tax of 100 f. (Kohier, p. 12, fol. 48). On 30 March 1640, two workers at the Amsterdam weighing station (Wagh) declared at the request of Cornelis Bicker (or R 8161) that various individuals had received bales of pepper, including Jan Raij who received 6 bales (NA 992, film 1222, fol. 56). Jan Reij may be the son of Reynier Reij, the owner of the goods sold.

BuyerPelgrum van Hooft in de Nes
Buyer FamilyHooft, Pelgrum van
Buyer NotesOn 4 March 1616, Pelgrem van Hooft, from Wyck ter Duerstede, 32, living on the N.Z. Voorburgwal (6 years), was betrothed to Trijntje Gielis, widow of Pieter Huer, living in the Nes (DTB 420/102). Earlier, in 1606, Pieter Huir had indeed lived in de Cananeesche Bruiloft in the Nes when he bought lots for 1 f. 16 st. in the Haarlem lottery (GAA, 117/51 F 872). On 15 June 1618, the masters of the Orphan Chamber named Pelgrom van Hooft, pasteybbacker (pastrybaker) as guardian over the son left by Pieter de Bluver, pasteybacker (WK 5073/513, fol. 168vo.) Pelgrem van Hooft paid a tax of 30 f, in 1631, at which time he lived on the West side of the Nes (Kohier, fol. 235, p. 54). On 29 April 1631, Pelgrom Hooft, pasteijbacker, 46, Jan Huijr, hat retail merchant, 36, and Hester Verstenen, wife of Pieter Broens, declared at the request of Arnout de Porcq, assistant merchant (coopgesel) that they had very well known Isaacq de Porcq (cited in the NOTES to R 26911, which relates to a deposition made at the request of Passchier Huer, who was probably related to Pieter and Jan Huer, cited above) (NA 910, film 1146, Notary Pieter Eyloff). On 23 May 1639, Pelgrem van Hooft, pasteijbacker, gave a procuration to the procureur in Nieuwcoop to collect debts due to him, including some from the estate of his brother-in-law Pieter Wiggertsz., surgeon (NA 992, film 1222). Pelgrom van Hooft died in 1650 (see INTRO to INVNO 373, his death inventory). At the time of his death, he was still living in de bruyloft van Sara in Galilea in the Nes. Note that his inventory contains no painting of dansers. However, the inventory contains many paintings without titles.

BuyerDaniel van As pasteijbacker in de Nes
Buyer FamilyAs, Daniel van
Buyer NotesOn 3 March 1616, Daniel Gysbrechtsz. van Nas (signs), 24, from Dordrecht, living in Leyden, pastry baker, brought his father's consent to marry Josijntgen Seijs (Sijs, Chijs). She was assisted by her uncle Claes Sijs, living op den Dam (DTB 420/101). Claes Sijs (Chijs, Seijs) (1555-1619), married to Trijn Claes Cloeck, was a merchant from Gent, first noted in Amsterdam in 1580. Anna Seijs, the daughter of Claes Seys (I), married Dr. Adriaen Pauw, the son of the famous burgomaster Reynier Pauw in 1606. Their son Claes Seys II, later named Nicolaes Seys Pauw, knight and lord of Bennebroeck and Oosterwijck, married Anna van Lockhorst (cited in the NOTES to R 18950) (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 193; on the Sijs or Chijs family, see also Elias, op.cit., pp. 157-8). On 1 October 1619, Daniel van As and his wife Josijntje Cijs, baptized their son Claes in the presence of Annetje Cijs (DTB 40/60). Thus the daughter-in-law (Anna Seijs) of the burgomaster of Amsterdam witnessed (perhaps as godmother) the baptism of the son of a pastry baker. In 1620, Daniel van As, pastrybaker, summoned Hendrick Voet, norenburger (retail hardware merchant) for his failure to pay him, van As, a Norenburg crown of 50 f. for services rendered (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 368). In a declaration dated 8 Janauary 1625, Marritge Marechal, living in the house of her father Joost Marechal, made a declaration at the request of Jeremias Hagens (of R 25243). Hagens had told her that his master Daniel van Asch, cake baker, had taken some objects on two occasions out of a locked chest (NA 256, film 127, fol. 76vo., Not. Meerhout). There seem to be two individuals named Hendrick Voet. Hendrick Voet I was a retail merchant, cited above; the other, Hendrick Voet II was was a director of the V.O.C. from 1625 until his death in 1652. It was presumbably the latter, married to Anna van Munster, who was the father of Eva Voets of INVNO 168. If so, Hendrick Voet I was the first husband of Geertruyt Duckers, from Cologne, who remarried with Daniel van Genegen of R 20520. Daniel van As, living in the Nes in de Grauwe Haes, was buried on 9 February 1632 in the Old Church. A sum of 8 f. were paid to the church on his behalf (DTB 1045, fol. 41). On 12 October 1632, Josyntgen Seys, assisted by Daniel van Beuningen, her guardian, appeared before the Orphan Chamber and declared that her four children, Lyntgen, 15, Claes, 13, Josyntgen, 11, and Heyltgen, 9, whose late father was Daniel Gysbrechtsz. van Nas, pasteybacker, were entitled to 600 f. for their father's inheritance (WK 5073/789).

BuyerGraeffin
Buyer FamilyGraeffin (Hendrickgen Gerrits)
Buyer NotesThe real name of Graeffin was Hendrickgen Gerrits. She was born in 1578. She married Cornelis Pietersz., carpenter, in 1598, Reyer Reyersz. varentman in 1603, and finally Andries Pietersz., also carpenter, who survived her, in 1607. (In later years, Andries Pietersz. used the family name Holoogh). In 1620, de Graeffin was named as having paid a fine in her activities as an uitdraagster (first page of the Kohier for that year). On 29 October 1627, the honorable Hendrickje Gerrits de Graeffine, sworn assessor, lying sick in bed, declared at the request of Niclaes Gerrits van Leeuw, notary, that, in the summer of 1626, she had gone with the petitioner (van Leeuw) to assess the goods of Cornelis Wilkes, spices merchant. On this occasion Pietertgen Jans, widow of Cornelis Pietersz. Cat, was present. The deponent had started by appraising the bed and, by the time she had completed her appraisals, including the goods in the store, it was 2 A.M. During this entire time, Pietertgen had vilified her. Pietertgen claimed that she had had much to do with the afore-named Cornelis Wilcques (NA 857, film 576, fol. 111vo and 112, Not. Roodenburg). Hendrickje Gerrits was buried on 16 June 1629. The ringing of the bells on the occasion of her burial indicates that she was Roman Catholic. Her third husband died in 1633. She was illiterate (I. van Eeghen, Uitdraagsters .... Amstelodamum Maandblad 56 (1969), p. 107.) On 11 January 1632, the honorable Cornelis Claesz. Leydecker (the brother of Willem Claesz. Leydecker of R 24922), one side, and Andries Pietersz. Holoogh, house carpenter, on the other, the afore-said Cornelis Claesz. being a headman of the St. Crispijnsgilde (shoemakers and leather dealers) in Amsterdam, having bought on behalf of the guild from Andries Pietersz. a house and court in the Ruslandt [where many uitdraagsters were living], next to the heirs of Pieter Segersz. (of R 31152) on the East side and the widow of Daniel Woutersz. (of R 26574), coffin-maker, now married to the bode to Dordrecht, on the West side for 2,500 f. (NA 991, fol. 2, Not. J. Bosch). Graeffin's daughter Maynsgen Andries (probably identical with the buyer Meynsgen Ariaens of R 23030), from her marriage with Andries Pietersz., married the surgeon Jan Orgel, who was a buyer at auction in 1637 (R 35661). On 15 February 1634, Mr. Jan Orghel and Willem Jansz. Orghel (probably his son) were named as testamentary guardians over the children of Andries Pietersz. Holoogh (NA 910, Notary Pieter Eyloff). On 11 MMay May 1637, Matthijs Jacobsz. de Been, son of Jacob Matthijsz. de Been, living in Delft, 17 years old, was apprenticed to Mr. Jan Orgel for two years. Jacob Matthijsz. would pay Orgel 60 f. a year. Orgel would supply his apprentice with lodging, food and drink. Jacob Matthijsz. was trained as a sculptor with Willem van Tetrode, who testified in 1611, that he had successfully completed his training (Montias, Artists and Artisans in Delft, p. 89).

BuyerJacob Leeuwen een van de bekende in huys
Buyer FamilyLeeuwen, Jacob (van)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is probably identical with the silk cloth merchant of that name. On 20 June 1617, Jacob van Leeuwen, from Utrecht, 26 years of age, living on the O.Z. Achterburchwal, assisted by his father Gysbert van Leeuwen, was betrothed to Anna Jans, assisted by Coenradt de Willem, her uncle (DTB 421/241). He paid a tax of 150 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the O.Z. Voorburchwal (Kohier, fol. 145vo, p. 34). Jacob van Leeuwen is listed as among the wealthiest silk cloth merchants by Van Dillen (Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, R.G.P.78(1933), p. XLIII). However, it should be noted that an individual named Jacob van Leeuwen was portrayed in the Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Johan Fonteyn in 1625, who is unlikely to be identical with the silk merchant of that name (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, p. 103). It is not clear which of these two inviduals, if not a third, the Jacob van Leeuwen was who was buried in the O.K. on 3 November 1635 (DTB 1045/75vo). If we may judge from the address at the time of his marriage, it is likely that this individual was the silk merchant.

BuyerBroeckhuysen [crossed out: Jan Reij]
Buyer FamilyBroeckhuysen (Jan van ?)
Buyer NotesSeveral individuals named Jan van Broeckhuysen are known. One was the father of Roelandt van Broeckhuysen, stone dealer, whom he assisted on his betrothal to Cristina Dunders (DTB 445/12). Another (?) was said to be living on the Cingel in front of the house of the painter Pieter Stalpaert in 1607 (R 30513). If so, he may have been the husband of Aefje Roelofs with whom he had a daughter named Aefje baptized in the O.K. on 28 January 1621 (DTB 5/343) and another daughter, also named Aefje, baptized in the O.K. on 30 April 1628 (DTB 40/449). Another was a tailor's journeyman who was 32 years old on 29 December 1633 when he was betrothed to Elisabeth van Lier. who was assisted by his uncle Goosen Jansz., she, by her father, Dirck van Lier (DTB 442/27). The following entry from the Weeskamer Inbringenregister refers to the tailor. On 10 March 1639, Maria van Lier, assisted by her chosen guardian Jan van Broeckhuysen, presented her son Tymen, whose father was Tymen Cornelisz., house carpenter, to the Orphan Chamber. One of the assets to which the child was entitled was an obligation for 150 f. in the name of Jan Broeckhuysen, tailor, dated 15 April 1644 (WK 5073/789). Neither seems to be identical with the pastry baker Jan van Broeckhuysen, who is the most likely candidate as buyer of the present lot. On 29 July 1632, Jan van Broeckhuysen, 40, Hendrick Huijer (inkeeper), 27, and Jeremias Hagens, 34 (of R 25243) (likewise pastry baker), all neighbors of Jan Cornelisz. van Neck (?) testified about a dispute, curses etc.. (NA 371, fol. 103, Notary Willem Cluyt). On 6 October 1637, Jan Hendricksz. Admirael (of R 35467) transferred to his father Hendrick Jansz. Admirael 90 gulden that were due to Jan van Broeckhuysen, pasteybacker. On the same day Jan Hendricksz. declared Van Broeckhuysen had some claims against him arising from certain wedding goods (a banquet ?) that had been delivered to his father who had refused to pay (NA 919, film 1150). Finally, the buyer may have been Hendrick Cornelisz. van Broeckhuysen, whose widow was said to be 32 on 1 January 1637 (NA 991, fol. 50, Not. J. Bosch) Broeckhuysen, to all intents and purposes, should be considered unidentified. On Jan Reij, who may have been the underbidder for this lot, see R 20339.

Buyer FamilySoutberch, in de
Buyer NotesThe house in den Soutberch, on the Oostindische Kay near 't Ruslandt, belonged to Jan van Lier, born in Dantzig in 1589 and died in Amsterdam in 1644. He was the father of Margaretha van Lier of INVNO 217 and the son-in-law of Constantina de Haze, the widow of Albert Schuyt (of R 28923) (NA 641, fol. 97, not. Sybrant Cornelisz.) It is not known, however, whether the house already belonged to Van Lier at the date of the present sale. It may be another house called de Soutberch, which was used as an inn at the beginning of the 17th century. An entry in the accounts of the late Hans Thijsz. de oude states that 3 f. were given aen den waert in de Soutberch in de vercoping van de actien (Arch. Thys, Library of the University of Leyden, no. 112A). It may also have something to do with Gerrit Soutberch of R 20597. Abraham van Straelen, who was 32 years old in a deposition dated 30 August 1632, was said to be innkeeper in 't Soutberch (NA 372, fol. 120, Not. Dirck Cluyt, film 189).

BuyerBalthasar Visscher in de Gasthuys huysen
Buyer FamilyVisscher, Balthasar (de)
Buyer NotesBalthasar de Visscher was a merchant engaged in foreign trade, born in Cologne about 1590. On 9 August 1621, David Claesz., 42, Cornelis Ariaensz. Becker 34, Balthasar de Visscher 30, and Hendrick [...] 29, merchants, testified at the request of Jan Pietersz., Portuguese merchant about a ship that had sailed to Malaga (NA 255, film 127, Not. Meerhout). On 29 October 1626, Balthasar de Visscher, from Cologne, 36, living on the Rouense Kay, was betrothed to Sara Cobbout, from Amsterdam, 28, assisted by her father Aernout Cobbout and Anna van Valckenburgh, her mother, living in the Nieuwe Hoogh Straet. Mr. de la Riviere, predicant in Delft, was a witness (DTB 431/450). As the notes in R 21250 confirm, the bride's father was Aernout Cobbout (II), formerly called de jonge, who was indeed living in the Nieuwe Hoogh Straet. From 1636 to 1638, the year when his wife died, Balthasar Visscher rented the house on the Breestraat owned by Magdalena Belten, her husband Christoffel Thijs and her brother Pieter Belten de jonge. The house was sold to Rembrandt on 5 January 1639 (Schwartz, Rembrandt, p. 202.) On 21 November 1633, Balthasar de Visscher, 43, merchant, testified at the request of Arnout van Liebergen (I), of R 30681, likewise merchant, that he had gone several times on the Coast of Barbary (Morocco), including Safi, Mogador, and St. Cruys, and reported on the prices practiced in those parts. In counterpart for the Netherlandish goods that were sold there, one bought goat skins, gum, almonds, saltpeter, forbion(?), citrous fruit, hides and such merchandise. However, the local merchant demand at least part payment in cash and give in return as little as they can (NA 694B, film 4980, Not. J. Warnaerts). He died in 1643 (Jaarboek C.B.G. 44(1990)).

BuyerAnthony van Heynsbergen
Buyer FamilyHeynsbergen, Anthony van
Buyer NotesOn 1 February 1624, Anthony van Hensberg, from Antwerp, 26, assisted by his uncle Meynaert van Hensberch, living over 't boshuysch, was betrothed to Helena de Bock, from Hamburg, assisted by her brother-in-law Cornelis van de Lemmer and Barbara Bartels, her acquaintance (DTB 669/226). Heynsberg(en) was apparently Lutheran (he baptized his daughter Helena in the Lutheran Church on 14 June 1629 (DTB 139/29)). At the September 1637 sale of Jan van Maerle, Anthony van Heijnsbergen, living on the Rockin, bought a ring for 40 f. 10 st. (WK5073/962). On 5 June 1638, Carel de Molyn, merchant in Haarlem, 52, and Anthony van Hens Bergen, 30 (an error for 40 ?), declared at the request of Bartolomeus Bentes, merchant, that De Molyn had bought a ruby from Manuel Duarte, which he had brought to Hensbergen to insert in a gold setting. But there was something wrong with the ruby. Duarte said I shall make good on it. Molyn had wanted to sent the ruby to Moscow to be sold there (NA 696A, film 4982). On the important Moscovy trader Carel Jansz. du Moulin (cited in the NOTES to R 27358 and R 27363), see also Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden, 1560-1640, pp. 283-6 and passim). He was the brother of Pieter Jansz. du Moulin (cited in the NOTES to R 27385) who was also involved in the Moscovy trade. Both brothers were originally from Brugge (Wijnroks, op.cit. p. 269). Manuel Duarte was a prosperous (Portuguese) jeweler who paid a tax of 150 f. in 1631, living on the South side of the Hooghstraet, next door to Jan van Maerle (Kohier fol. 220, p. 50). On 11 June 1640, Anthony van Hensbergen, goutsmit, appeared before the Orphan Chamber and declared that his three children -- Jannitge, 9, Bartlemeus, 6, and Heyndrick, 2, whose late mother was Helena de Bock, were entitled to 5,000 f. for their mother's inheritance (WK 5073/789).
