BuyerSymon Rijck
Buyer FamilyRijck, Sijmon de
Buyer NotesSymon de Rijck, 1565-1652, was a very rich merchant. He was the son of Jacob Simonsz. de Rijck, captain of the Watergeuzen until his death in 1586, and of Margriet Claes Hooft. On 8 January 1594, Simon de Rijck, 29, living on the N.Z. Voorburgwal, assisted by his mother Margriet Claesdr., was betrothed to Marijtje Symonsdr., 32, living on the O.Z. Voorburgwal, assisted by Cornelis Symonsz., her brother, and Gertgen Symonsdr., her sister (DTB 406/468). Margriet Claes Hooft, the mother of Sijmon de Rijck, was the daugher of Niclaes Willemsz. Hooft, the uncle of P.C. Hooft's father. Maritge, Cornelis and Gertgen Simons were the children of the dyer Simon Hendricksz. Verwer Jonckheijn and the siblings of Elbert Simonsz. Jonckheyn of the present inventory. Maritge Simons was buried on 16 October 1622 (Elias, Vroedschap, pp.190 and 379). Sijmon de Rijck invested 3,600 f in V.O.C. shares and paid 350 f tax in 1631, at which time he was said to be one of the city counsellors (raden) (Kohier, fol 3v). In 1596 he was a master of the Mannetugthuis (Jan Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 256). In 1625, he was a director of the V.O.C. In 1631, Simon de Rijck, member of the Vroedschap, paid a tax of 250 f. (Kohier, fol. 6vo, p. 2). From 1633 to 1638, he was a master of the Orphan Chamber. He was then called Simon de Ryck van Gracht (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 383). Simon de Rijck seems to have been sympathetic to the Remonstrants. According to a 1627 letter from Raadpensionaris Antoni Duick to his brother-in-law Hugo de Groot, he was a brave man, who respected every community (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 1, p. 496).

BuyerHans Barentsz. Bontemantel
Pre Lot HeaderDen 19e dito [october 1618]
Buyer FamilyBontemantel, Hans Barentsz.
Buyer NotesHans Barentsz. Bontemantel, the son of Friederich Berndes, alias Frederick Barentsz., alias Bontemantel, and Marij Aris, was baptized in the O.K. on 12 August 1567 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 486). On 25 january 1597, Hans Barentsz., 27 years old, living on the Zeedijck, assisted by Fredrick Barentsz., was betrothed to Anne Pellecoorne, from Antwerp, 18, living in the Roosgen Poort in the Nieustadt, assisted by Rinbert Pellecoorne and Maaijke Deegbroot, her parents (DTB 408/127). On 2 August 1599, Hans Baerentsen, koopman, and Anneken Pelecoerns had their son Egbert baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Maria Arents (DTB 3/192). Anne Pellicorne died in 1602; he died in October 1643. Hans Bontemantel was a merchant on the Zeedijck in 1597, then on the N.Z. Achterburchwal near the Nijzelsbrug. He became a broker in 1612. On 18 September 1596, Hans Barentsen and Claes Andriessen (of R 30086), merchants in Amsterdam, protested against a schipper's failure to continue a voyage to Lisbon (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 178(1981), p. 86). On 13 March 1604, Hans Barentsz. was betrothed for the second time (in de Pui) with Annetje Gillisdr. from Brugge, widow of Michiel Heijnrixsz. (DTB 665/341 and Elias, Vroedschap, p. 486.) He was betrothed a third time on 28 October 1606, again assisted by his father Frerick Barentsz., with Aaltje Gerrits Delffs, living in Delft (DTB 762a/236). The information given in Elias (p. 486) that Annetgen Gillisdr. was buried on 15 April 1632 would seem to be inaccurate (she must have died before 1606 when Hans Barentsz. remarried). In 1631, Hans Barentsz. paid a tax of 30 f., at which time he lived on the West side of the Wester (N.Z.) Voorburgwal (Kohier, fol. 34, p. 9). On 12 June 1634, Hans Barentsz. Bontemantel, 66, Gillis Dodeur (of R 29979), 63, Samuel Hooftman, 47, Harman Thomassen, 44, and Paulus Schoonhoven (cited in the NOTES to R 29979), all sworn brokers, declared at the request of Jan Kuijsten and Pieter van Trille, for themselves and for their colleague insurers, that insurance policies are not issued for ships engaging in freebooting (vrijbuijterij). The witnesses further confirmed this statement by asserting that they signed policies every day for their masters (NA 694B, Not. J. Warnaerts). In 1639, Bontemantel was portrayed, along with 22 other schutters in the Corporaalschap of Dirck Theuling by Nicolaes Eliasz. Pickenoy (Oud Holland, 4(1886), p. 97.) His nephew, Hans Bontemantel II, the son of Hendrick Barentsz. Bontemantel (the brother of Hans Barentsz. Bontemantel I), was baptized on 24 January 1613, married Maria Snoeck, the daughter of Aegidius Snoeck, the brother of Pieter Jansz. Snoeck of R 21202, on 29 July 1646 (Elias, loc. cit.) He became a member of the Amsterdam Vroedschap in 1653 and a director of the W.I.C. in 1654 (Elias, op. cit. p. 485).

BuyerCornelis van Campen
Buyer FamilyCampen, Cornelis van
Buyer NotesCornelis van Campen, the son of Jacob van Campen I, who died in 1593, was born in 1564 and died on 26 February 1636. He was a merchant dealing in Russian grain under the firm Pieter Bas and Cornelis van Campen. At the time of this death he lived in the house Sonnenburg in the Warmoesstraet. On 17 October 1602, Cornelis van Campen Jacobsz., 25 years old, living on the Nieuwen Dijck, assisted by his uncle Roemer Visscher, was betrothed to Catharina Quekels Cornelisdr., 24, living in the Warmoesstraet, assisted by her mother Machtelt Pieters (in de Pui) (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p. 169.) Machtelt Pieters (du Bien), the wife of Cornelis Jansz. Queckel, was the aunt of Pieter Jansz. du Bien of R 30035. The inventory of Catharina Quekels was taken on 9 September 1636 (INVNO 1159). She was buried on 26 February 1637 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 85). Shortly after her death an accounting of her assets was made for Orphan Chamber. Among her heirs was her sister Yda Quekels (1582-1657), whose late husband was Willem (Jansz.) Hooft (born in 1581), Heemraad van den Nieuwen Amstel (WK 5073/789, fol. 344 and Elias, Vroedschap, p. 150). Another sister of Catharina Queeckels, named Maria (1585-1644), married Abel Matthijsz. (Burgh) (1579-1646), who became a burgomaster of Amsterdam. Cornelis van Campen was a schutter in the corporaalschap of Captain Egbert Vinck in 1586 (group portrait by Dirck Barentsz.) in 1586 (Oud Holland 15(1897), p. 134) and a member of the Rederijkerskamer de Egelantier (In Liefde Bloyende) in 1615 (Oud Holland 22(1904), p. 41). He bought lots for 30 f. in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (GAA, 22/107 F 162). He paid a tax of 1,125 f. in 1631, one of the largest in the Kohier. He was then living in the Warmoesstraet (Kohier, fol. 168vo, p. 39). On 7 November 1632, Cornelis van Campen gave Jacob van Campen II (the famous painter and architect), the son of his brother Pieter van Campen, 10,000 f. as a donatio inter vivos (NA 415, film 6432, fol. 113, Not. J. Jacobsz.) At his death in 1636, Cornelis van Campen left a fortune of 266,000 f. (Elias, p. 85). The wife of Cornelis van Campen, named Geert Visscher, was the sister of Roemer Visscher, the author of Sinne-poppen, and the father of the poet Anna Roemers, whom he assisted, when she passed her prenuptial vows with Dominicus van Wesel, on 24 January 1624 (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p. 162). Cornelis van Campen had a child out of wedlock, named Jacob Cornelisz. van Campen, who has often been confused with his nephew, the architect Jacob Pietersz. van Campen (for these family relations, see the genealogy and the article by M.J. Bok in Jacob van Campen, Het klassieke ideaal in de Gouden Eeuw, Amsterdam 1995). Finally, it should be noted that the sister of Cornelis van Campen, named Aefje (Aechtge) van Campen, was married to Jan Reyer Loots, harringpacker and herring merchant, whose inventory was appraised by the painter Jan Jansz. (II) on 6, 7, and 9 July 1624 (NA 562A, Not. Westfrisius, INVNO 1142). On 9 November 1624, Cornelis van Campen was named guardian, along with Reyer Claesz. (of INVNO 490), over Margriete Loots, the daughter of the late Aechtgen van Campen. Reyer Claesz. (of INVNO 490) was said to be the girl's uncle (WK 5073/513, fol. 21vo.) Jan Reyersz. Loots's son Reyer Loots (1599-1649) was an art lover who may have given Jacob van Campen entree intro Utrecht's artistic circles (Bok, op. cit. p. 36). Reyer Claesz. signed a petition to the Amsterdam vroedschap in 1627 with 26 other aalmoezeniers concerning the best way to collect a levy on grain for the benefit of the poor (Maandblad Amstelodamum 74(1987), p. 87). In 1638, he was said to be a sworn broker, 62 years old (NOTES to R 7695). Willem van Campen II of INVNO 1153 was the son of Nicolaes van Campen and the grandson of Willem van Campen I, the brother of Jacob van Campen I, cited above.

BuyerGerrit van Schoonhoven
Buyer FamilySchoonhoven, Gerrit van
Buyer NotesGerrit or Geraert van Schoonhoven was a wealthy merchant associated in a firm with Hans van Loon (R 7696). He came from Antwerp, spent some time in Middelburg, and was first noted in Amsterdam in 1615 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 313). In 1631, he was taxed 1350 f., at which time he lived on the O.Z. Voorburchwal (Kohier, fol. 133 vo., p. 31). His house on the Voorburchwal, named Jupiter, was situated behind the Oude Kerck. He was married to Anna Muncx. On 8 January 1615, Geraert van Schoonhoven and Annetje van Schoonhoven had their daughter Clara baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Lenart van Geeren (of R 31377) and Ermeken Vreesten (DTB 5/129). Clara married Jeronimus de Haes (de Haze) (of R 29604) on 28 July 1637 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 601). On 7 December 1617, Gerrit van Schoonhoven and Anna Munx had their son Salomon baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Lucas Luce (the art dealer of R 20173) and of Reijstert van Schoonhoven (DTB 5/234). Another one of their daughters, named Maria, born in Middelburg in 1611, married Dr. Cornelis Boom (pensionaris in 1628) on 22 May 1629. (Elias, Vroedschap, pp. 477). G. van Schoonhoven signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. He died before 17 August 1635 when Ana Muenich, widow of Gerrit van Schoonhoven, drew up a procuration to collect money in Middelburg (NA 597, Not. Lamberti).

BuyerHendrick Hooft
Buyer FamilyHooft (Haeck?), Hendrick (Willemsz.)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is probably identical with Hendrick Haeck, later called Hendrick Willemsz. Hooft, born in 1584 and buried on 20 January 1626. He was a merchant in the Dijkstraet, a member of the firm Simon de Rijck, Pieter Hasselaer, and Hendrick Hooft. He was regent of the Aalmoezeniersweeshuis in 1613 and regent of the St. Pietersgasthuis in 1623. He married in Amsterdam, on 28 July 1611, Haesgen Houtlock, born in Alkmaar in 1589, daughter of Hendrick Hendricksz. (probably of R 29649) (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 151). Two years after his death, in 1628, his widow Haesje Hendricks signed the Remonstrant petition of that year. It is likely that he is identical with Hendrick Hooft who transmitted compromising letters from Hugo de Groot in Paris to Amsterdam in 1622 (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 1, p. 482). His son Hendrick Hooft II (1617-1678) was commissary of the Chamber of Marital Affairs in 1649 when Rembrandt was summoned to appear to answer the complaint of Gieerte Dircx (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 494 and Strauss, Rembrandt Documents, pp. 276, 290, and 308). It is not known how the individual named Hendrick Haeck who obtained a privilege from the Russian Tsar in 1629 and had a monopoly of tin exports from Moscovy around 1630 is related to the buyer of this lot. On the trader with Russia, see Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden 1560-1640, pp. 286, 324).
