BuyerBarent van Someren
Buyer FamilySomeren, Barent van
Buyer NotesThe buyer Barent van Someren, who often purchased paintings in the Orphan Chamber auctions, was a painter, art dealer, and innkeeper. He was the son of the merchant and fencing master Lambert van Someren, from Antwerp, and the brother of Hans van Someren (who died in 1619) and of Paulus van Someren, painter in Antwerp and London (1576-1621) (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 801). In 1588, he was inscribed in Antwerp as an apprentice of Philips Lysart, who may have been the uncle of the painter of the same name who was an apprentice (?) in Amsterdam in 1607 with Francois Badens (R 30473). He then spent several years in Rome with the history painter Aert Mytens, whose daughter Leonora he married in 1601. He was back in Amsterdam in 1602 (Briels, Vlaamse schilders, 1997, p. 385.) On 10 March 1604, the honorable Bernard (Barend) van Someren and Lenora Mytens passed their testament, naming Arnout van Someren I (probably Barend's brother of R 26143) and Marten Mytens (perhaps Leonora's brother) as executors. Melchior van Dortmont (of R 31178) and Justinus Arondeaulx witnessed the act (Briels, Vlamse schilders, p. 385.) He and his unnamed wife (Leonora Mytens) frequently had children baptized in the Lutheran Church: On 17 November 1613, the child was named Guilijam, the witnesses were Jacob Willemsz., Hans Etman, and Ambrosius Bosschaert (the famous flower painter from Middelburg) (DTB 138/54). The witness Hans Etman may be identical with Jan Eltman of R 28261. On 23 July 1615, the child was named Henrick; the witnesses were Louijs van Sont and the widow Duyster (Hendrickje Jeronimus, the wife of Cornelis Dyrcksen, droogscheerder, the father of the painter Willem Duyster). Hendrick van Someren became a painter in Amsterdam (he died after 1682). On 25 April 1617, the child was Maria and the witnesses Jacob de Meijer and Maria Houtensdr. (Jacob de Meyer, who was also Lutheran, invested 8000 f. in V.O.C. shares together with his brothers; see the NOTES to R 20005). On 20 March 1618, the child was Judith and the witnesses Paul Pels, Gillis van Brussel, and Mayken Rees. On 7 May 1619, the child was Lambrecht and the witnesses Abraham Vinck (the painter) and Marie de Rees (DTB 138/245). His other children were Sara, Margaretha, Marie, Leonora, Constantia, and Susanna. The daughter of Leonora van Someren and of the surgeon Hendrick Muller, named Leonora Zuiddorp, married Christoffel van Sichem III (Bredius, ibid.). On 6 August 1609, Barent van Someren, about 39, made a deposition together with Hans van Cleeff (see the NOTES to R 27385). Van Someren first kept the inn int Schuffelet and, after 1619, int Hoff van Hollandt or Meerhuysen (Briels, ibid.) In 1626, he was the innkeeper of the Schild van Vranckrijck, where Adriaen Brouwer sojourned (Bredius, De schildersfamilie Mytens, Oud Holland 24(1906), pp. 6-7). On 2 December 1624, Barent van Someren acknowledged a debt of 200 f. that he owed to Catalijntgen Bisschops, widow of Pieter Heeseman (of INVNO 577), for paintings delivered. He declared that he had delivered 12 paintings to the said widow in return (Briels, ibid.) On 28 July 1632, the honorable Barent van Someren and Dianora (alias Leonora) Mytens, born in Naples, passed their second testament (ibid.) He died before 4 October 1634 when his widow was cited (see below). His prints and drawings were sold at auction on 22 February 1635 (INVNO 634). His widow, Leonora van Someren continued to live in the inn De Schild van Vranckrijck after his death (NA 771, Not. Verhey, act of 4 October 1634). On 11 September 1649, Leonora van Someren, widow of Barent van Someren, was buried in the N.Z. Kapel. Three days later an inventory was made of her estate, at the request of her children (INVNO 1183).

BuyerWillem Everwijn
Buyer FamilyEverwijn, Willem (II)
Buyer NotesThe buyer is perhaps the son of Guillaume Everwijn I who was associated in business with Aernout van der Wyen (the father of the painter Jacques van der Wyen). The company had an account of 7 folio's at the Wisselbank (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 149). Willem or Guillaume Everwijn II was betrothed on 19 April 1619 when he was 29. He was said to be from Bremen, to have no living parents, and to be living on the N.Z. Voorburgwal. He was betrothed to Johanna Sautin, living on the O.Z. Voorburgwal (DTB 423/223). Johanna Sautin (or Sautijn) was a member of a distinguished family of Reformed merchants from Antwerp (Van Dillen, op. cit. pp. 119, 195). She is probably identical with Joanna Everwijns who was a witness to the baptism of Gerrit Lunden (the future painter) on 27 September 1622 (see the TEXT of R 1094 of INVNO 1177). On 5 October 1621, Willem Everwijn and Joanna Sautijn had their daughter Petronella baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Susanna Oils (DTB 40/142). On 16 March 1639, Pieter Buttinga, wine dealer (of INVNO 390), and Mr. Elbert Beernhardt, surgeon, constituted themselves as co-sureties, together with Jan Spieringh and Jacob Muys, as first sureties, for Willem Everwijn, who owed the wine dealer Jeuriaen Huybertsz. 2,546 f., pursuant to a court sentence. The guarantee was made before the aldermen of Amsterdam (NA 21, film 41, Notary Salomon Hendricx).

BuyerJan van Baerle
Buyer FamilyBaerle, Jan van (de jonge, II)
Buyer NotesJan van Baerle II, merchant in Amsterdam, born in 1603 or 1604, was the son of Jan van Baerle I, from Antwerp, born about 1555, who passed his testament in 1573. married Jacomina Hoon in 1582. and died on 4 July 1605 (Nederlandsche Leeuw 60(1942), col. 10.) Jan van Baerle de oude freighted 8 ships between 1591 and 1602 (IJzerman, Economisch-historisch jaarboek 17(1931), p. 269). When Jan van Baerle de jonge bought books at the sale of Melchior Bouwer on 16 April 1627, he was said to be living bij de Hartestraet op den Reisersstraet (WK 5073/960). Van Dillen mentions a procuration given to Jan van Baerle II by an inventor of a water mill on 17 December 1639, to sell the rights thereto (Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P., 144(1974), p. 251). On 28 March 1639, Joannes van Baerle (II), 36, and Duarte de Mena, 29, merchants, declared at the request of Manuel Diaz Henrique (cited in the TEXT of R 158 of Montias1) declared that they had lived some time in Naples. Jan van Baerle had been visiting Italy for 20 years and had lived there four-five years in a row (NA 1498, Not. Oly). On 10 March 1640, Jan van Baerle, 36 years of age, from Haarlem, merchant, was betrothed to Maria van Genegen, 25, assisted by her father Daniel van Genegen (DTB 453/284). Daniel van Genegen was a frequent buyer at auction (R 20520). Jan van Baerle was the brother of David van Baerle of R 20459 and the brother-in-law of Constantijn Huygens (Elias, Vroedschap, vol. 2, p. 563). His sister Petronella van Baerle was said to be the widow of Everart Becker de jonge in 1627 (Nederlandsche Leeuw, loc. cit.) Jan van Baerle (II) was buried in the N.K. on 9 June 1644 (DTB 1055/15).

BuyerPieter van Breusegem in 't Gulden Lely
ProvenanceAlmost certainly the painting (or a copy thereof) bought by Paulus Bisschop at the Gillis van Coninxloo sale of March 1607, where it was called 1 schildery op doeck van de Antwerpsche vischmarckt and sold for f 20:--:--.
Buyer FamilyBreusegem, Pieter van
Buyer NotesOn 15 February 1609, Hubert Nason, from Antwerp, assisted by his uncle Pieter van Breusechem, was betrothed to Sara van Soom, from Antwerp (DTB 429/234, cited by J. Briels, Vlaamse schilders p.363.) Hubert Nason, who was a butcher and a dealer in fats, was the father of the Hague painter Pieter Nason, born in 1612, who was probably a pupil of Nicolaes Elias (Pickenoy) of R 8367. Hubert Nasen (Nason) was a butcher who contracted to deliver meat slaughtered according to religious specifications to the Portuguese Jewish community in 1619 and 1620 (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 62(1970), pp. 38-9). Pieter van Breusegem was named in the testament of Francois Martens and Elisabeth Nason as guardian of their children. (Francois Martens was a dealer in fats who signed the petition of fat dealers of 18 July 1618 (NA 377, fol. 278)). Pieter van Breusegem appeared, together with Hubert Nason, before the notary N. Jacobs, to settle the liquidation of the estate, on 21 December 1617 (GAA, NA 381, film 6413). The painter Carel du Jardin was a nephew of Elisabeth and Hubert Nason (see the documents in Jennifer Kilian's Ph.D. dissertation on Carel du Jardin.) The house de gulden Lelie, on the Vischsteeg, was formerly owned by Willem Corver, book seller (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 51). On 11 March 1627, Pieter van Breusegem, merchant, was said to be the creditor of Jan le Clercq for 204 pounds vl. proceeding from an unpaid letter of exchange, drawn by Van Breusegem which was supposed to be paid in Middelburg. The letter had now been paid in view of the fact that Van Breusegem promised not to harass (molesteren) Jean le Clercq or Gillis Dodeur (of R 29979) about it in the future. Dodeur may have guaranteed the letter (NA 661, fol. 115, Not. J. Warnaerts).

BuyerSymon Willemsz. haerwever
Buyer FamilyWillemsz., Symon
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a hair weaver. He was living outside the Jan Roodenpoort in de Witte Eenhooorn in the Margarietenpad when he bought lots in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (GAA, 107/1 F 784). On 6 April 1608, Sijmon Willemsz., haerwercker, and Judick Jans had their son Jan baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Neeltien Willems and Giertje Remmen (DTB 4/237). On 21 April 1612, Sijmon Willemsz., haerwever, from Mechelen, living in the Margrietenpad, widower of Judith van Netteren, was betrothed to Tanneken Winghman, widow of Adriaen van Meerbeek. Both were literate (DTB 416/147). He bought flower bulbs at the sale of the late Pieter Pietersz. tuynman on 25 September 1626 (WK 5073/952). On 2 March 1637, Willem Simonsz. Moons and Jan Symonsz. Moons, brothers, living in Amsterdam, confirmed the transfer by their father Symon Willemsz., hair worker, of two obligations (life rents), both dated 28 June 1612, issued by Jacob Jansz., hair waver (haerwever). The transfer had been effected before the aldermen Jacob Jacobsz. Vinc and Laurens Reael, on (?) February 1634 (NA 843, film 569, Not. Hoogeboom). Jan Symonsz. Moons must be identical with Jan, son of Symon Willemsz., baptized in 1608.

BuyerWillem van Gelder
Buyer FamilyGelder, Willem van
Buyer NotesThe buyer is probably identical with Willem van Gelder who paid a tax of 15 f in 1631 and lived on the Keysersgracht Westsijde (Kohier, fol. 300 vo, p. 69). On 18 April 1609, Willem Vilties van Gelder, tailor, 21 years old, living in de Kolck, was betrothed to Catalijntje van der Putte, 21, living on the Warmoesstraet, assisted by Hans Koninxlo (probably II), her uncle. She lived on the Ooster Voorburgwal (DTB 414/35). He was betrothed again on 29 September 1622, 34 years of age, with Annetje Evers (DTB 427/265). On 23 October 1635, Willem van Gelder, widower of Anneken Everts Paers, assisted by Hans van der Putte (on whom see the NOTES to R 21507) and Samuel Bicker (an error for Samuel Becker of R 20466?), signed a pre-nuptial contract with Claesge Tonisdr., widow of Franchoijs Lunenbergh, assisted by Jacob Tonisz., her brother and Hans Martensz., her cousin, (probably of R 28860) respectively. The bride brought 2,000 f. to the marriage (NA 772, Not. Verhey). On 9 November 1635, Willem van Gelder, broker, appeared before the Orphan Chamber on behalf of his two children, Geertruy, 10, and Anneken, 7, whose late mother was Anneken Verdoes, and declared that they were entitled to 1,500 f. for their mother's inheritance (WK 5073/789). He apparently remarried once more with Sibylla van der Hoeven, with whom he had a daughter named Christina who was baptized in the Remonstrant Church on 6 May 1638 (DTB 301). On 6 October 1637, Willem van Gelder, 49, and Jacob Gillis, 47, sworn brokers, testified about the prices of W.I.C. shares at the request of Samuel Gilles (NA 695B, film 4982). The same witnesses, plus Anthony Rinck (of INVNO 576) and Cornelis Wilmerdonck, likewise sworn brokers, made a similar deposition at the request of Isaack van Beeck (cited in the NOTES to R 2873) on 23 April 1640 (NA 1601, Not. W. Hasen). On 22 February 1638, the honorable Juffr. Elisabeth Stockmans, widow of Jan Tayller, sold to Willem van Gelder a garden located on the St. Joris or Baltus padt, outside the Regulierspoort, for 1,400 f. (NA 696A, film 4982). Jan Tayller had been a cloth merchant (R 24922). Willem van Gelder was buried in the N.Z.K. on 15 October 1658 (DTB 1068/34).

BuyerAbel de Heripon
Buyer FamilyHeripon, Abel de (I)
Buyer NotesAbel de Heripon I was a merchant, originally from Doornik (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 303). In 1606, Abel de Hereypon, living in the Nes in 't Wapen van Franckryck, bought lots for 1 f. 16 st. in the Haarlem lottery (GAA 139/4 F 1008). On 9 January 1610, Abel de Heripon (the clerk writes Heriponte), living in the Nes, assisted by Glaude de Heripon, his father, was betrothed to Johanna van Axell, from Mechelen, 24, living in the NZ Achterburchwal, assisted by Franchoijs van Axele, her father, and Margriet van de Kammen, her mother (DTB 414/221). He remarried after the death of Johanna with Janneken van de Moerel, from Antwerp, 34, living on the Conincxgracht on 9 April 1619 (Jaarboek C.B.G. 19(1965), p.161). Heripon had two sisters, Marie and Rachel. Marie married Joos Colpaert in 1592; Rachel married Thomas Hendricksz. van Daken from Wijk ter Duurstede in 1605 (ibid.) Thomas van Daken (Dacken) was the father of Geertruijt van Dacken, the wife of Carel de Raet of R 29529. Abel de Heripon paid a tax of 125 f. in 1632, living on the Singel (fol. 12, p. 4). Abel de Heripon was buried in the Walekerk on 10 May 1649, leaving no children (DTB 1130/127). By testament, he left 1000 f. to the Walenweeshuis, of which he was a regent from 1631 to 1637. He was portrayed in a group portrait of the regents of the Walenweeshuis by Thomas de Keyser in 1637, together with Jean de Hochepied, Jean Baguelaer, and Esaias Castelijn, who was probably related to Isaack Castelijne of R 30817 (F.G.L.D. van Kretschmar, De portretten in het Walenweeshuis, Jaarboek C.B.G. 19(965), p. 160). On 14 July 1635, Jan Jansz. vlockcoper, declared that a house on the Lauriersgracht had been sold to Abel de Heripon on 30 September 1630 but Heripon had not been able to pay (NA 863, Not. Zwieten, film 579). An inventory of the goods of the late Jannetje Jans, widow of Emanuel van Suijrmon, was taken on 10 February 1639, at the request of Sr. Abel de Heripon. Five days later, an inventory was made of the goods that Sr. Abel de Heripon and Julien Lanson (cited in the NOTES to R 7613) were keeping for the daughter of Jannetgen Jans Fisius (NA 419, film 6436, fol. 178 and fol. 179 and INVNO 1237). In 1643, Abel de Heripon (probably I) and many other merchants signed a petition to the authorities to stabilize the currency (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 84). Abel de Heripon was buried on 10 May 1647 (DTB 1130/127). His godson and nephew Abel de Heripon II, the son of Pieter de Heripon and Elisabeth Noijens, was baptized on 26 June 1623. He may have been the amateur actor and singer in the Amsterdamsche Schouwburg called Abeel (die door syn syngen yeder stem en keel verdoft) in the libelous poem St. Nicholaes milde gifte aen de Amsterdamsche Jonckheit (1640) and also referred to elsewhere as Harripoen (Oud Holland 1(1883), pp. 204, 216).

BuyerDavid van Baerle
Present LocationSwedish private location (formerly with the dealer Pieter de Boer in Amsterdam)
Buyer FamilyBaerle, David van
Buyer NotesThe present lot is almost certainly the painting Een stuck van de predicatie van Christi int scheepge van Vingboons in David van Baerle's death inventory (1671)(INVNO 118), evaluated at 60 gulden. David van Baerle (1595-1671), the son of Jan van Baerle de oude and of Jacomina Hoon, was a merchant who eventually became a director of the West-Indische Compagnie. After the death of his father in 1605, he and the other heirs, including his brother Jan of R 20427, invested (or had invested for them) 14,400 f. in the second subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 259). On 22 May 1615, Jacomina Hoon, widow of Jan van Baerle, assisted her daughter Petronella, 26 years old, living in the Nes, when she was betrothed to Paulus de Bisschop, from London, widower of Elisabeth van de Moor (DTB 419/56). Paulus de Bisschop was the owner of the goods in the present inventory. Another sister of David van Baerle, named Susanna van Baerle, married the statesman Constantijn Huygens. On 1 May 1625, David van Baerle, assisted by his brother Guilliam van Baerle, living on the Keysersgracht, was betrothed to Sara van Erp, assisted by her mother Jacomijntje de Jongh, living on the Kloveniersburgwal (DTB 430/80). Sara's half sister Christina married the poet and historian Pieter Cornelisz. Hooft. Another half sister, named Maria van Erp, married Jacques (or Jacomo) van Uffelen of R 7706. Still another half sister, named Magdalena, married Joost Baeck, the son of Laurens Baeck of R 28932. On 19 March 1626, David van Baerle and Sara van Erp had their daughter Jacomine baptized in the Wa.K. in the presence of Jan van Baerle (de jonge) (the brother of David, of R 20427) and of the widow of Arnold van Erp (Jacomijne de Jongh) (DTB 130/205). On 26 April 1627, when David van Baerle bought books at the sale of Melchior Bouwer, he was said to be living on the Heregracht next to the Wolfstraet (WK 5073/960). After the death of Sara van Erp, he remarried with Rachel Godijn on 17 October 1628. Rachel Godijn (or Godin) was the daughter of Charles Godin I and of Rachel Le Carlier (alias Le Rideur) (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 562 and p.580). Rachel Godin was the cousin of Samuel Godin (of INVNO 1123) and of Daniel Godin, the putative sons of Jean Godin and Barbe Vivien. On 13 January 1628, David van Baerle bought the house Saxenberg on the Keisersgracht, which had been built in 1618 by the architect Hendrick de Keyser from the heirs of Hans Lenaerts and Marrijtje Cocks (of INVNO 568 and 5680) and the parents of Leendert Lenaerts of R 33789. The price of the house was f. 16,100 f. Later Van Baerle bought several lots around the house, which he used to build extensions. He sold the house to Anthoni Thijsz. and Magdalena Belten (Maandblad Amstelodamum 57(1970), pp. 98-9). On 22 April 1642, David van Baerle and Ragel Godijn had their daughter Constantia baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Jasper de Visscher (DTB 42/305). On 20 October 1643, the same couple had their son Henricus baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Fielmon (Philemon) Bartolotel (Bartolotti) (DTB 42/379). In February 1645, David van Baerle signed a petition calling for the strict enforcement of the 1622 regulations on the currency (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 89). Rachel Godin was buried in the W.K. on 20 May 1669. David van Baerle died on 1 September 1671 (Elias, Vroedschap, p.563).

BuyerBarent Jansz. van Lombert
Buyer FamilyLombert, Barent Jansz. van
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Barent Jansz. van Lombert, may be identical with Barent Jansz. who sold paintings at auction on 4 July 1615 (See Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P.78(1933), p. 118). It is not clear whether he is also identical with Barent Jansz. Porceleijn, a frequent buyer at Orphan Chamber auctions (R 7661). Barent Jansz. was the cousin of the surgeon Barent Jacobsz. (R 32593). Note that Barent uutdrager, who lived on the Bloemstraet, was buried in 1624 (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 54(1962), p. 98). He cannot therefore be identical with Barent Jansz. Porceleyn who bought many lots after this date. Finally, it may be speculated that Barend Lambertsz. of R 31733 changed his name to Barend van Lombert (or Lambert).

BuyerLaurens Charles in de Ster in de Warmoesstraet
Buyer FamilyCharles, Laurens
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Laurens Charles, was a silk cloth merchant. Born in Antwerp ca. 1561, he became a citizen of Amsterdam in 1587. He invested 1200 f in V.O.C. shares and paid a tax of 110 f. in 1631 (Kohier, p.39 and Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 151). On 12 September 1587, Laurens Charles, 26, assisted by Jacques Bulteau and Nicolaas de Colenaar, was betrothed to Lysbeth van Dael (Dalen), from Mechelen, 24, living in the Halfsteeg. After her death, he was betrothed to Maria Bulteau, from Mechelen, 24, on 17 July 1620. The first betrothal was in de Kerck, the second in de Pui (DTB 404/324 and DTB 763/81). On 6 December 1632, a notarial act cited the cited waged against Laurens Charles in his capacity as curator over the estate of Annetje Reynst (NA 991, fol. 39vo, Not. J. Bosch). His death (?) inventory of 26-29 September 1644 (GAA, N.A. 563) contained only very few paintings, besides family portraits. In 1607, he already lived in the Warmoesstraet (R 30837). De Ster or gulden Ster in the Warmoesstraet was located between de Ketel and 't gulden Lam. It belonged to Nicolaas van Bambeeck (I) in 1615 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 649.) It may have been his son Laurens Charles II who had a house built on the Keisersgracht in 1669 (E. van Houten, Grachten, p. 22).

BuyerSamuel Becker
Buyer FamilyBecker (Becquer), Samuel
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Samuel Becker, was born in Antwerp in 1581, first lived in Middelburg, and finally settled in Amsterdam where he dealt as merchant with Italy and the Levant. He was the son of Everard Becker, a prominent merchant in Middelburg and a director of the Middelburg Kamer of the V.O.C., and of Mary Sohier, the sister of Catharina Sohier, who was the mother of Carel Latfeur of R 20471 and of Pieter de Latfeur of R 20047 (see the notes to R 20471). In 1608, together with a number of Amsterdam merchants, he signed a petition to the burgomasters of Amsterdam, requesting the revocation of the prohibition on the use of cashiers to effect money transfers (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P., 59(1925), p. 16). He married Jacomina van Baerle, 1587-1651, on 14 September 1604. Jacomina van Baerle was the older sister of Susanna van Baerle, who married Constantijn Huygens, heer van Zulichem, on 6 April 1627, and of David van Baerle of R 20459. The Church Council complained that the bride's father, Jan van Baerle I, had allowed dancing at the wedding (Roodenburg, Onder censuur, p. 324). On the birth of Constantijn's son Christiaen, born on 14 April 1620, Jacomina, who was the godmother, gave her pille a gilded beaker. Samuel Becker remained on close terms with Constantijn Huygens and his children, two of whom he had as guests for three months in Arnhem in 1635 (Oud Holland 31 (1913), pp. 213 and 216). Samuel Becker died in Amsterdam in 1640. His son David Becker married Justina van Baerle, the daughter of David van Baerle and Rachel Godin, in 1664 (INVNO 118) (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 562). Samuel Becker paid a tax of 500 f in 1631, at which time he lived on the Keysersgracht (Kohier, fol. 187, p.43).

BuyerBenedictus Maijer
Buyer FamilyMaijer ( Meijer, Meyer), Benedictus
Buyer NotesBenedictus Meijer was called oudkleercooper in 1625 when he bought a house on the East side of Het Nieuwe Weespat (WK 5073/913). He was thus a buyer of second-hand clothing and probably an uitdraager as well. On 3 August 1627, Niclaes Coques, as the appointed guardian of Sara, 17 years old, the daughter left by Benedictus Meyer, oudcleercoper and Grietgen Houtman, listed before the Orphan Chamber the assets to which she was entitled. These included a number of houses (one on the Lauriersstraet assessed 700 f.) and an obligation with the face value of 3000 f. (WK 5073/789, fol. 160vo.) On 18 December 1630, Barent Barentsz. de jonge, dealer in hides, husband and guardian of Aeltge Tielmans, the only daughter and heiress of Tieleman Jaspersz. appeared and declared having received out of the hands of Mr. Hugo de Goijer (cited in the NOTES to R 24908), heir of Benedictus Meijer [crossed out: vettevarier], the sum of 600 f., in the form of an obligation owed by David Coster, dyer, principal, and Jan Valckenburg (probably of R 31706) and Benedictus Meijer, sureties, passed before the masters of the Orphan Chamber on 17 May 1611 (NA 842, Not. Hoogeboom). The heirs of Benedictus Meijer paid a tax of 10 f. in 1631, at which time they lived on the Lauriersstraet (Kohier, fol. 99vo., p. 24).

BuyerCarel de Latfeur
Buyer FamilyLatfeur, Carel (Charles) de
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Charles de Latfeur, born in Bergen (Mons) in Hengou (Hainaut), was the son of Jean de Latfeur, from Antwerp, and of Catharina Sohier. He was born about 1572 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base). He was the brother of Pieter de Latfeur of R 20047 and of Susanna Latfeur who married Louis de Malapert, born in Mons, on 24 August 1599. Charles de Latfeur and co. had an account of 12 folio's at the Wisselbank. He was a merchant who, in 1627, accepted a certain quantity of cannon shot in exchange for money lent out to (Philippo) Burlomachi (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 88). He was associated with his brothers-in-law Philippo Calandrini and Andries van der Meulen II in recruiting troops and hiring ships for Venice (Van Dillen, Van rijkdom en regenten, 1970, p. 322. On 27 September 1616, Charles Jansson Latfeur and Hester van der Meulen passed their testament (NA 613, film 332). On 29 October 1617, the couple had their child Charles baptized in the Walse Kerck. The witnesses were Andries van der Meulen (Hester's brother), Samuel Becquer representing Philip Calandrien (Calandrini), Jacques van Schot, and Mary de Latfeur (DTB 130/55). Mary Sohier, sister of Catharina Sohier, cited above, was married to Everard Becker, an important merchant in Middelburg and one of the directors of the Middelburg Kamer of the V.O.C. (Van Dillen, op.cit. sup., p. 84). Samuel Becquer of R 20466, a buyer at the present sale, was the son of Everard Becker and of Mary Sohier. Jacques van (or de) Schot was the son of Cornelis de Schot, the brother of Francoys de Schot of R 23342. The wife of Francoys de Schot(I), named Isabeau Walraven, was the daughter of Isabeau Becker, who was presumably related to Everard and Samuel Becker, mentioned above. A daughter of Charles de Latfeur and of Hester van der Meulen, named Catharina, married Nicolaes Ruts II (1601-1642) on 19 January 1638; he was the son of Nicolaes Ruts I, who was painted by Rembrandt in 1631). On 24 November 1637, Nicolaes Ruts de jonge (II), living in Marseilles, presently in Amsterdam, declared at the request of Anneken Jeuriaens van Quickenburg that he had had a child with her (NA 14828, Not. C. Touw). Charles de Latfeur was a signatory of the Remonstrant petition of 1628. In that same year, he was a regent of the Aalmoezeniersweeshuis (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 300.) On 11 October 1635, Carlo Latfeur and Philippo Calandrini, representing Andries van der Meulen, gave a procuration to Gysbert Gerritsz. Majoor in Naerden to collect money due to them (NA 948, film 1171, Not. Benedict Baddel). Charles de Latfeur became a citizen of Amsterdam on 17 November 1638 and died in 1650 (Gelderblom, op. cit.) On Charles de Latfeur, see also Luuc Kooijmans, Vriendschap en de kunst van het overleven ..., p. 50.

BuyerAugustijn Pars
Buyer FamilyPars (or Pas), Augustijn
Buyer NotesOn 27 September 1603, Augustijn Pas, from Antwerp, goldsmith, 23 years old, assisted by his mother Lympe (?) Pas, was betrothed to Janneken Verplancken, from Antwerp, 27, living in the St. Jansstraet, assisted by her mother Maiken Koschott (DTB 411/35). He was living in the Halsteech in 1606 when he bought lots for 1 f. 16 st. in the Haarlem lottery (GAA,54/15 F 425). On 24 February 1621, Augustyn Pas, goldsmith, presented his six children to the Orphan Chamber: Pieter, 14, Lourens, 12, Augustyn, 8, Abraham, 6, Lysbeth, 2, and Jannetken, 2 months old, whose late mother was named Janneken Verplancken. The children were entitled to 4,400 f. for their mother's inheritance. According to a marginal note, all the children but Pieter died before their father (WK 5073/789, fol. 159vo.) On 1 July 1621, Augustin Pas, from Antwerp, widower of Jannetke Verplancken, goldsmith, living in the Halsteegh, was betrothed to Aaltje Kistepenningh, from Deventer, 35 living in the Nes (DTB 426/124). On 21 January 1628, Augustyn Pas, goldsmith, together with Wynant Wynanstsz., baker (also cited below), bought a house for 9300 f. from Hendrick Cornelisz. One of the two sureties in the purchase of the house was the goldsmith Zeger Pietersz. of R 32331, the brother of Pieter Lastman (WK 5073/913). On 15 December 1628, Augustijn Pas, master silversmith, about 47 years old, together with Pieter Casse, also master silversmith, 53, Jan Pieterss. van den Eeckhout, master goldsmith, 46, Wynant Wynantsz. baker, 26, and Tobyas van Linten, 40, also master silversmith, made a deposition at the request of Cornelis de Bye, also master silversmith, concerning the theft of jewelry by two women, whom they had questioned in the house of the widow of Alexander van der Hoeven, master silversmith in the Nes (of R 20986). The women had stolen two gold rings from the market stand of the silversmith Willem Calcoen (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), pp. 667-8). In 1631, Augustijn Pas, living on the North side of the Halssteeg, paid a tax of f. 40 (Kohier, fol. 213vo., p. 49). On 3 June 1636, Johannis Lutma, silversmith, 50, Harmen Outhuijs, 43 (of INVNO 301), and Abraham van der Hoeve (of R 24270) declared that they had just been in the house of Augustijn Pas, who lay sick in bed from a contagious illness, and that they wished to make it known that it was his (Pas's) will and desire that his testament should be adhered to, that all the goods that his son Pieter would inherit from him after his death could be mortgaged or sold, and that two guardians should be appointed over the children of minor age of Pieter Pas (NA 889, film 595). Augustijn Pars was buried 5 days later, on 8 June 1636 (DTB 1090/54). On 10 February 1638, the silversmiths Johannes Lutma and Abraham Hooff (van der Hoeven), guardians of Janneken, 4 years old, the daughter of Pieter Pas, silversmith, declared that she was entitled to 1,300 f. from the inheritance of Augustyn Pas (WK 5073/789). Pieter Pas, the son of Augustijn Pars, silversmith, transferred to Johannes Lutma and Abraham van der Hoeven, merchants, on 1 April 1638, the opbrengst (rents) on two houses located outside the Heiligewegspoort, which were administered by the Weeskamer on behalf of his children (NA 417, fol. 215, Not. N. Jacobs, Extracten). On [...] 1637, Aeltje Kistepenningh, widow of Augustyn Pas, brought 3000 f. to the Orphan Chamber on behalf of Janneken, 3, the daughter of Pieter Pas and Claertgen Bierschoen, whose grandfather was Augustyn Pas (WK 5073/789). On 18 August of the same year, Aeltgen Kistepenninck, assisted by her guardian Abraham Jansz., declared that her son Isaack, 13, whose father was Augustyn Pas, goldsmith, was entitled to 5,200 f. for his father's inheritance (ibid.) It was probably Augustyn Pas de jonge, the son of the buyer, who contracted with Hans Hoogendorp, sworn gold refiner (of R 31920), to instruct him in the art of separating gold from silver on 27 June 1634 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), pp. 56-7).
