BuyerGerrit Wynants de swager van Pieter de Koninck
Buyer FamilyWynants, Gerrit
Buyer NotesOn 22 February 1619, Gerard Wynants, from Gogh, 25, assisted by [...] Ellersz., his grand uncle, living in Bremen, was betrothed to Maria Coninghs, living on the N.Z. Voorburgwal, assisted by her mother Paschyntje Coningh (DTB 668/224). Maria Coninghs was the sister of the painter Salomon Coninck and the daughter of the jeweler Pieter Coning I of R 28901. On 2 and 16 October 1648, Sr. Salomon Coninck and Maeycke Konincks, widow of Gerrit Wynants, also substituting for their brother-in-law Sr. Hans Biermans, as husband and guardian of Susanna Koninx, all leasers of the house on the Blaeuwe Brughwal, which had been leased to the late Sibert Huijbertsz. and his widow, who still lives there, demanded from the widow the outstanding rents for a half year, amounting to 70 f. (Bredius, KÜnstler-inventare, p.35 of the Nachträge). Salomon de Coninck was a Mennonite. He acted as guardian of the children of Joost Glimmer and appeared as such in the death house of Cornelis Joosten Glimmer (Van der Veen in Kroniek van het Rembrandthuis 2001, p.59). Gerrit Wynants, when he purchased the present lot, was said to be the brother-in-law of Pieter de Koninck. The latter was probably Pieter de Coning II (the son of Aert de Conincx II of INVNO 161), although it is possible that swager was here used as father-in-law, in which case it would have denoted Pieter Coning I of R 28901. Hans Biermans, the brother-in-law of Salomon de Coninck, bought some land in Bijlermeermeer, together with his brother Hendrick Biermans in 1634. They were apparently sued for non-payment (NA 1184, film 1319, Not. J. de Vos, act of 29 May 1634). On or about 26 May 1637, an act was drawn up concerning the dispute between Pieter Coninck (II?), on one side, and Hans Biermans, on the other, about the lands in Bijlermeermeer that Coninck had sold to Biermans. The dispute had been submitted to arbitration. Samuel Bloemaert (of R 21578) was one of the arbiters. Jacob Hoochkamer and Jacob Jacobsz. Vinck signed the act (NA 991, fol. 38, Not. J. Bosch). Hans Biermans, living on the North side of the Raemsloot, paid a tax of 15 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 221vo, p. 51). He was a silk dyer. On 7 July 1637, he hired an apprentice to work in his dyeing establishment for 3 f. per week in the first year and 4 f. per week in the second (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p. 160).

BuyerMarten Biscop de broeder
Buyer FamilyBiscop (Bisschop), Marten
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Marten Biscop, was the brother of Cathalyn Biscops. He paid a tax of 10 f in 1631, at which time he lived on the O.Z. Voorburchwal (Kohier, fol. 174, p.40). He was said to be 26 years old on 24 February 1624, when he was betrothed to Anna Heyens. His mother's name was Martijntje Bisschop (DTB 439/35). In 1634, he was said to be 34 years old (see the NOTES to R 33620). When he bought books at the sale of Anthony Smijters on 18 February 1626, he was said to be one of the vrunden. On 7 December(?) 1632, Martyntje Bisschop, widow of [...] Bisschop, assisted by Marten Bisschop (her son), her chosen guardian, named Anthony Schorer to collect money from Eva Felbiers formerly widow of Adriaen (?) Bisschop (NA 372, fol. 179, Not. W. Cluyt). On Anthony Schorer, see the NOTES to R 31619. On 10 August 1634, Isaack Bernaert (II) (of R 33620) and Elias Harckman, both 38, and Marten Bisschop, 34, testified at the request of Sr. Hendrick Graviau concerning ship-loading practices in Arkhangelsk (NA 694B, film 4980, Not. J. Warnaerts). The estate of Elias Hermans was sold at auction by the Orphan Chamber on 23 September 1648; it brought f. 661.43 (I. van Eeghen in Jaarboek Amstelodamum 61(1969), p.85). In May 1635, Marten Bisschop was said to be a sworn broker (NA 948, film 1171, Not. Benedict Baddel). On 8 April 1636, Jan Arentsz., cooper, 60, declared at the request of Maerten Bisschop that Samuwes (Samuel ?) Brouwer, lying sick in bed, had told him that he wished to die in his house and that he had no pleasure in the Bible (in de Bijbel geen gemack en hadde). The witness advised him to go and die in the house of the petitioner (NA 597, Not. Lamberti) (see also the deposition of 2 October 1635 made by Jan Arentsz., cooper, at the request of Samuel de Brouwer in NA 597).

Buyer NotesThe name of the buyer may be a distortion of Hans Mus or Musch, sugar dealer, camelot weaver, and probably silk dyer, born in Antwerp, who became a poorter of Amsterdam on 19 May 1586 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base). On 29 November 1607, Jean de Nimain (Nimay) (of R 29522) contracted with the silk dyer Hans Mus to found a company for the dyeing of silk (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 69(1929), p. 656).

BuyerCornelis Marcus, zuickerbacker bij de Gasthuijs
Buyer FamilyMarcus, Cornelis
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Cornelis Marcus, was a confectionner, who lived near the Gasthuysbrug and the Gasthuysmolensteech (see R 20577 and R 33005). He was probably the son of Marcus Cornelisz., hovenier (horticultist), who, on 21 March 1619, contracted with Pieter Pietersz., also hovenier, to form a company to trade in plants, seeds, and flowers, in Prussia, Poland and elsewhere (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 322). The bulbs in Pieter Pietersz.'s estate were sold by the Orphan Chamber on 25 September 1626. Flora and the knecht van Flora who bought at the sale may be Marcus Cornelisz. and his knecht, who is referred to in the contract of 1619 (WK 5073/952). Marcus Cornelisz., the father, may have been married to Annetje Paulis, who in turn was said to be a close blood relative of Stijntgen Jan Herckis (NA 772, Not. Verhey). On 20 May 1620, Cornelis Marcuss, from Middelburgh, 25, living in the Nieuwestraet, sugar refiner, was betrothed to Trijn Jans, 27, assisted by Jan Gerritsz. Post, roeddrager deser stadt, living in the Reestraet (DTB 424/241). On 11 May 1621, Cornelis Marcuss and Trijn Jans had Jan, the first of several children, baptized in the N.K. The witness was Griet Jans (DTB 40/127). He paid a tax of 5 f. in 1631, at which time he indeed lived on the Gasthuismolensteech (Kohier, fol. 261 vo., p. 60). On a transaction involving the exchange of linen for tulip bulbs, some of which were planted in the garden of Cornelis Marcusz., see R 20029. Marcus Cornelisz. II, the son of Cornelis Marcusz., called himself Flora, as probably his father did. He was said to be a bloemist (flower-grower) when he evaluated the bulbs in the estate of Jeronimus Victorij on 20 December 1647 (NA 1914, folio 492).

BuyerAbraham Biscop
Buyer FamilyBiscop (Bisschop), Abraham (Cornelisz.?)
Buyer NotesThere are two candidates for the buyer of this lot with the name of Abraham Bisschop: 1) One was the son of Cornelis Bisschop, living on the Zeedijck, who was 27 when he was betrothed to Magdalena Feellebiers on 3 November 1616 (DTB 421/9). The couple baptized a son named Cornelis on 5 August 1620, at which time the witnesses were Bartholomeus Bisschop and Lysbethje Sprangers, the sister of Michiel Spranger, who was betrothed to Salomon van der Voort on 25 May 1612 Oud Holland 4(1886), p. 298). Salomon van der Voort, from Haarlem, the son of Paulus van der Voort and of Boudewyntje Bens, does not seem to have been a close relative of the painter Cornelis van der Voort (of R 20793). Paulus Salomonsz. married Jannetge Coelincx on 8 July 1653 (De Navorscher 55(1905), p. 220). Cornelis Bisschop drew up his testament before leaving for the East Indies on 12 November 1627. He left a bequest of a black cloth garment to Lyentje Michiels, spinster, together with his wages during his trip (NA 857, fol. 123). He eventually married Lyentje Michiels. He drew up another testament with Lijntge Michiels (witnessed by the painter Claes Claesz. Wou) on 11 October 1635 (Bredius, KÜnstler-inventare p.1900). 2) The second was the son of Bartholomeus Bisschop, just named. On 15 November 1608, Abraham Bisschop van Antwerpen, 26 years old, living in the Nes, assisted by Bartholomeus Bisschop and Tanneken Plante, his father and mother, was betrothed to Anna de Slachmulders, 26 (DTB 413/326). After the death of his first wife, he remarried with Anna Backlan (betrothal on 21 August 1612) (DTB 416/246). Apparently, the two Abraham Bisschops were related (via Bartholomeus Bisschop, the father of the second, who was a witness at the baptism of a child of the first). Bartholomeus Bisschop and his wife Tanneken Plante were the uncle and aunt of Marie Plante who married Abraham Oyens of R 31396 in 1605. Bertelmeus Bisscop invested 1,200 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares in 1602 (Van Dillen, Het ouste aandeelhoudersregister p. 162). At the sale held at the request of Claes Ewouts in May 1609, Abraham Bisschop, living in the Nes, bought a lot for 19 f. and 5 st. In view of the address in the Nes, he is certainly the second of the two individuals of that name (i.e. Abraham Bartholomeusz. Bisschop) mentioned above. Since the only known brothers of Abraham Bartholomeusz. Bisschop were Jacob and Daniel (see R 59 of Montias1), it appears more probable that the buyer of the present lot was Abraham Cornelisz., and that he was the brother of Marten and Catharina Bisschop. The two men named Abraham Bisschop were probably cousins. Note that one of the two (if not a third of the same name) was said to be a merchant in Middelburg in a procuration passed by Pieter Seullin (probably of INVNO 1306) on 2 September 1624 (NA 389, fol. 136, Jacob and Nicolaes Jacobsz. Not.)

BuyerJacob Tammesen
Buyer FamilyTammesen, Jacob
Buyer NotesOn 29 March 1624, Jacob Tammesz. Vries (signs Jacob Tammesen), from Leeuwarden, 29, assisted by his father Tam Jacobsz., living on the N.Z. Achterburchwal, was betrothed to Margriete Spierings, from Amsterdam, 23, assisted by Jacques Spieringh amd Margriet Hendricx(?), her parents, living on the Keysersgracht (DTB 429/59). Tam (or Tamme) Jacobsz., the father of Jacob Tammesz., a dealer in butter and fats, was said to be 63 years old in a deposition of 25 May 1638. He was also said to be a factor of this city. He gave his deposition together with Jacob Jansen ten Stappen, butter dealer, 24, Steven Olpherts, 32 (of R 25067), Isaack Harsbeeck (the brother of Paulus Hartsbeeck of R 32142), 48, Barent Revertsz., 50, Cornelis Volckertsz.,42, all butter dealers, at the request of Boele Lambertsz., citizen of Groeningen. They declared that the butter arriving from Groeningen and stored in the cellars of Amsterdam was free of tax until it was resold (NA 521, Not. Westfrisius). (NA 521, Not. Westfrisius). Margriete Spierings was the sister of Annetge Spierings, who was married to the painter Gillis Hondecoeter (R 20898). Jacque Spieringh bore wells (boormacker) (see NOTES to R 20898). On 20 April 1631, Jacob Tammes and his wife Margriet Spierings had their son Adriaen baptized in the N.K.in the presence of Mayke Spierings (DTB 41/134). On 25 February 1625, various lots of spices and other goods were sold that had belonged to Pieter Mercijs (INVNO 578). One lot was bought by Jan de Vogel (of R 26637). The surety who guaranteed payment was Jacob Tammeszoon, living in the Stilsteech (GAA, WK 5073/957). Adriaen Spierincx, boremaecker, who claimed that he was owed 337 f. by Hendrick Kemp (of R 38065), wine dealer, on 25 May 1635, may have been Jacques Spierincx's brother (NA 843, Not. Hoogeboom). Aerjan Spieringh and his wife Geetruijt van Wamelen had their daughter baptized on 2 July 1632 in the N.K. in the presence of Janneken van den Bergh (DTB 41/323). On 21 February 1643, Tamme Jacobsz. van Leewerden and Jacob Tammes van Leeuwerden, who are probably the father and son referred to above, were said to be factors in the importation of butter from Frieslandt. Together with some other factors, they signed a petition concerning the import of butter in ungauged barrels (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 144(1974), pp.362-3).

BuyerAnthony de Mel daerin huijs
Buyer FamilyMel, Anthony de
Buyer NotesOn 9 December, 1604, Antoine de Mel, from Brugge, 33 years of age, living on the Nieuwe Dijck, was betrothed to Mariken Passavants, living in Leiden, from Heukelom (DTB 411/369). On 9 October 1605, Antoine de Mel and Maijken Passavan had their child Sara baptized in the presence of Jan Passavan and Margriet Brest (DTB 4/139). Margriet Brest was a school teacher, the only schoolvrouw cited in this database (NA 1183, dated (?) April 1637 goederen van Pieter Claesz. Brest berustende onder Margriet Brest schoolvrouw in de Breestraet). Anthony de Mel was an art dealer and a dealer in hosiery (kousenverkoper). On 7 June 1618, Michiel le Fort appeared before notary Westfrisius and declared that he had received an advance of 550 f. against which he had delivered to Gerrit Jacobsz. Haringh some paintings in the house of the hosiery dealer Anthoni de Mel for Haringh to sell at auction. The painter and art dealer Abraham Decker offered his guarantee in case the sale did not go through. Le Fort owed some money to Decker who had a right to some of the proceeds of the sale in counterpart (I.E. van Eeghen in Jaarboek Amstelodamum 61(1969), p. 81). This is the only documented instance known to me where the auctioneer advanced money for the goods he was expected to sell. As I.E. van Eeghen pointed out, the document also suggests that sellers could choose the auctioneer they wanted when they had goods to sell. Anthony die Mel was buried in the Z.K on 15 June 1635 (DTB 1090/40).

BuyerPieter Jansen Swelingh in St. Jop
Buyer FamilySwelingh (or Swellinck), Pieter Jansen
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Pieter Jansen Swelingh, was the son of the famous composer and organist Mr. Jan Pietersz. of R 27883. He was born in 1592/3 and died in 1670. On 11 May 1621, Pieter Jansz. Sweelingh, 29, living in the Koestraet, was betrothed to Heyltge Jans, 29, assisted by her nichte Jannetjen Martens and her brother Pieter Jans, living on the N.Z. Voorburgwal (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 289). Her parents were Catharina Pieters and Jan Claesz. Reyniers, a member of the Amsterdam Vroedschap from 1599 to 1612 (Elias, Vroedschap, p.244). Heyltge Jans Reyniers's when her post mortem inventory was taken on 18 February 1654 (NA 1914, Not. Uyttenbogaert, INVNO 1185). Pieter Jansz. was a merchant and regent of the Aalmoezeniersweeshuis in 1625. He lived in 't vosgen on the N.Z. Voorburgwal, as well apparently as in St. Jop (See Elias, ibid.). On 7 September 1622, Pieter Jansz. Swellingh was named by the masters of the Orphan Chamber to supervise the assets accruing to the child of Hendrick Jansz. compass maker (WK 5073/513, fol. 6). Jannetgen Abrahams, the widow of Hendrick Jansz., compasmacker, was cited in a document of 10 November 1631 (NA 414A, fol. 431). Henrick Jansz., compass maker, 30. living on the St. Luciensteeg, was betrothed to Jannetje Abrahams in 1603 (S. ter Kuile nd W. Morzer Bruyns, Amsterdamse kompasmakers ca 1580-ca 1850, 1999, p. 76). Pieter Jansz. Swellingh paid a tax of 230 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the Westersijde Voorburgwal (Kohier, fol. 289, p. 66). On 11 October 1641, signor Pieter Jansz. Sweelingh, merchant, and Mr. Claes Arentsz. steenhouwer signed a contract for hearthstone to adorn two houses located next to each other on the Turffmarckt that Sweelingh had the intention of building. The total payment amounted to 2,100 f. (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 144(1974), pp. 317-9). After the death of Heyltge Jans Reyniers, Pieter Jansz. Swellingh remarried with Lijsbeth Dommer (1623-1666) on 11 January 1654 (betrothal 19 December 1653). She was the daughter of Hendrick Jansz. Dommer (cited in the NOTES of R 27728) and of Dieuwertge Crijnen (Elias, ibid.) On 3 March 1637, Hendrick Jansz. Dommer, 41, and Floris Visscher, 29, merchants, testified about a ship that had come from Venice (NA 695B, Not. J. Warnaerts). On 7 August 1637, Gerrit Parijs, 67, Foris Visscher, 29, and David van Gansepoel (cited in the NOTES to R 29305) 28, made a deposition (NA 695B, Not, J, Warnaerts). Floris Visscher was a wealthy Lutheran merchant (apparently the son of the Lutheran minister of the same name). It was probably his son Floris Visscher III who bought a seigneurie near Ketel from Vermeer's patron Pieter Claesz. van Ruijven in the early 1680s.
