BuyerBento Osorio tegen over de Suyderkerck
Buyer FamilyOsorio, Bento
Buyer NotesBento (Baruch) Osorio was a Portuguese-Jewish merchant, who represented the firm of Andreas Lopes Pinto, established in Portugal, in Holland. He was contradoor for the provisioning of Portuguese troops in North Africa and, more generally, active in trade with Portugal (Geschiedenis van de Juden in Nederland, J.C. H. Bloom et al. eds, Amsterdam, 1995, p. 90). On 22 November 1618, a shipper of rice to Dantzig (in a ship apparently freighted by Osorio) was subject to an interrogatoire at Osorio's request (NA 200, film 111). He was taxed 250 f. in 1631, corresponding to an assessed wealth of f. 50,000. This was the highest tax paid by any Jew in Amsterdam (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. XLII.) On the tax itself, see Kohier, fol. 155vo, p. 36). Like many other Jews, he lived on the Breestraet. On 19 March 1626, Francisco Ramiris Pina Tomaer, Portuguese, 30 years old, no living parents, was betrothed to Abigael Osorie, 22. assisted by her father Bento Osorius and her mother Hester Osorie. She seems to have been illiterate (DTB 670/134). Bento Osorio freighted 12 ships between 1608 and 1616 and 17 ships between 1617 and 1625 (chiefly to Portugal) (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 185(1983), p. 630, and vol. 186, p. 779.)

BuyerStaets Melisz. in de 3 cranen
Buyer FamilyMelisz., Staets
Buyer NotesOn 8 January 1620, Staes Melisz., from Bommel, 26 years old, living op 't Water, was betrothed to Annetge Claes, 18, assisted by her father Claes Pauwelsz. living behind the O.K. (DTB 424/115). On 7 March 1621, Staes Melisz. and Annetje Claes had their son Anthony baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Anthony Melisz. and Willem Vinck (DTB 5/347). A loose notice in the personal papers of Notary Willem Cluyt, dated 1 April 1629, states that Staes Melisz., living op 't Water, in the drie cranen (in conformity with his address as buyer) owed the notary f. 4:16:-- for eight little books he (the notary) had made for a lottery or raffle of a cupboard and a few paintings, at 12 st. per book (NA 373, fol. 53). On 16 January 1630, Staes Melissoon, widower of Annetge Claes, was betrothed to Annetie Kickenpoost (DTB 435/54). Annetje Kickenpoost was the daughter of Jacob Kiekenpoost (I), merchant and kramer, originally from Ronse, born before 1550, who spent some time in Norwich and Emden before he settled in Amsterdam where he a became a citizen of the city on 11 January 1580 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base and Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 305). His post mortem inventory was taken on 22 January 1613 at the request of his widow Jacomijne Mase. The children were Anneken Kiekenpost and Jacob Kiekenpost (II) (GAA, notary Palm Mathijsz., NA 481). Jacob Kiekenpost II is probably identical with Jacques Kiekenpost de jonge, cited in R 28887. In 1631, Staet Melisz. paid a tax of 25 f., at which time he was living op 't Water (as he had been in 1620 and 1629) near the corner of the Dam (Kohier, fol. 279, p. 64). On 19 July 1635, Catharina de Vogel, assisted by Staets Melisz., her chosen guardian, appeared before the Orphan Chamber and declared that her three children with Nicolas Pauw, dealer in hops (of R 23378), were entitled to 9,000 f. for their father's inheritance (WK 503/789).

BuyerPieter Rans op de Breestraet
Buyer FamilyRans (Ranst), Pieter
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Pieter Rans (or Ranst), 1590-1641, was a merchant born in Brugge (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 312). He carried on an important trade with Russia. In the period 1610 to 1618, he was a prominent figure in the extraction of peat, along with his putative brother Jeronimus Rans(t) of INVNO 1334 (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 39(1942), p.13). In 1631, he lived, as the clerk of the Orphan Chamber indicated, on the St. Anthonybreestraet, when he paid a wealth tax of 550 f. (Kohier, fol. 156, p. 36). On 7 January 1621, Pieter Rans, 30 years old, living on the Monckelbaenburchwal, was betrothed to Rebecca Carels, 19 (DTB 425/188 and Elias, Vroedschap, p. 543). On 19 March 1625, Marinus (a transcription error for Marcus ?) Pels and Pieter Rans freighted a ship to La Rochelle (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P. 186(1983), p. 685). On 3 March 1626, Pieter Rans, as husband and guardian of Rebecca Carels (the daughter of Jan Jansz. Carel de jonge, son of Jan Jansz. Carel de oude of R 28890), was said to be one of the guardians of the children of Jan Jansz. Carel (de oude). He was involved in a dispute concerning the inheritance accruing to these children and to those of the former Burgomaster Jacob Poppe (WK 5073/549). In 1627, he was a regent of the Aalmoezeniersweeshuis (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 300). At some unknown date, he became a director of the W.I.C. (Johannes de Laet, Namen van de HH. Bewinthebberen). On 30 March 1640, two workers at the Amsterdam weighing station (Wagh) declared at the request of Cornelis Bicker (of R 8161) that a number of individuals, including Pieter Ranst, had received bales of pepper. Ranst received 6 bales (NA 992, film 1221, fol. 46). The fact that Pieter and Jeronimus Rans married two daughters of Jan Jansz. Carel de jonge lends some support to the conjecture that they were brothers, the sons of Lenart Rans and Constantia Coymans. It is possible but by no means certain that Pieter Rans was the father of Jacoba Rans who married Gillis Valckenier in 1648 (see the NOTES to R 20402).

BuyerMatheus van Hove schilder in de Verwersstraet
Buyer FamilyHove, Matheus van
Buyer NotesOn 4 February 1612, Mattheus van Hove, schilder, 22, living on the O.Z. Kerckhoff, assisted by his uncle Artus Geerdings (of R 29219), was betrothed to Catelijn Spruijts, from Antwerp, 30, assisted by her brother Geret Spruijt and her sister Anneken Spruijt (DTB 416/95). He was the son of Jan van Hoven from Mechelen, fish dealer, who settled in Amsterdam in 1587 (DTB 416/95 and Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 342). On 20 March 1612, Catherina Spruijts, daughter of Jacques Spruijt, declared that she had received from the hands of the merchant Hans van Essen (the father of the painter Hans van Essen de jonge of R 24928) an inheritance from the late Catharina Verhulst, widow of Guillaume Staes (Briels, ibid.) Jacques Spruijt was a merchant who claimed he had sold a 500 pounds Vl. obligation of the V.O.C. to Valerius Gistel de jonge (probably the nephew of Valerius Gistel I of R 27537) in a deposition dated 20 September 1633 (NA 694B, Not. J. Warnaerts). Matheus van Hove remarried in 1615 with Grietgen Willems and in 1621 with Anneken Reijers, from Harderwijck (ibid.) On 6 September 1616, Matheus van den Hove and Grietge Willems had their son Luijcas baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Jannetje Engleijn (the wife of Matheus's brother Luijcas van den Hove) (DTB 39/432). On 30 August 1620, the same couple had their son Joannes baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Anneken Gebings (Geerdings ?) (DTB 40/95). On 11 January 1626, Matheus van Hove and Anneken Reyers had their son Reynier baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Doctor Josefat Geerdings (surely a relative of the carillon player Artus Geerdings cited above) (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 119n of the Nachträge). On 1 November 1635, Mattheus van der Hoeve and Annetge Reyersdr. had their son Lucas baptized in the Remonstrant Church (DTB 301). Mattheus van Hove passed his testament on 1 August 1637 and died soon thereafter. On 22 September 1638, Annetge Reyers, widow of Mattheus van Hove declared in a deposition that she had been insulted by a certain Gerart Teunissen, who said that she was a whore, had stolen money, and with that money had set up a schilderijwinckel (a painting shop) (Briels, op.cit., p. 342). On 18 January 1639, Annetge Reyers declared before the Orphan Chamber that Mattheus van Hove's two children, Annetgen, 6, and Lucas, 3, were entitled to 800 f. from their father's estate. Lucas van Hove, the brother of Matheus van Hove, was still alive at this time. Annitge Reyers owned a house on the corner of the boeterssteechgen (WK 50733/789 and Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1485). Annetge remarried in 1639 with the painter Jan Sergeant (Briels, ibid.) Jan Sergeant was the grandson of Jacques le Sergeant, who was married to Barbe Loyson, the aunt of the painter Adriaen van Nieulandt (ibid.)

BuyerHendrick Omphalius [crossed out: Gerrit Soutburch in de Gulde Schaep]
Buyer FamilyOmphalius, Hendrick
Buyer NotesOn 8 June 1637, Pieter van Luffelen (of R 20008) lodged an insinuatie against Jacob and Henrick Ontfaellis (Omphalius) claiming that they had failed to pay 624 f. in debts owed by Jan Crijns of Cologne (NA 415, film 6453). On 19 December 1637, Jacob and Hendrick Omphalius, brothers, merchants in Amsterdam, named Johan Creijns, merchant in Cologne, to collect money due from a schipper to whom some lantsche laeckens (cloth made in Holland?) had been delivered (NA 522, film 4861, Not. Westfrisius). The fact that Bernard Omphalius of R 20581, who was Hendrick's brother, was born in Cologne, reinforces the last-cited document. The entire family (Bernard, Hendrick, Jacob) probably came from Cologne. They are likely to have been Lutheran (cf. the betrothal of Bernard and Hendrick in de Pui). On 27 February 1638, Jacob and Hendrick Omphalius, also representing Bernhardus Omphalius (of R 20581), all brothers and co-heirs of the late Anthonis Omphalius, gave a procuration to Willem Willemsz. Verdam, rentemeester, and Jan Sasz. Hocusen to sell a house in Frederickstadt (NA 522, film 4861, Not. Westfrisius). On 16 May 1643, Hendrick Omphali, living in Rotterdam, was betrothed to Maijken Adriaens, also living in Rotterdam (DTB 677/115). On Gerrit Soutburch (or Soutberch), see the NOTES to R 20597.

BuyerBernardus Omphalius bij de brouwerye van't Nachtglas
Buyer FamilyOmphalius, Bernardus
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Bernard(us) Omphalius, from Cologne, living on the O.Z. Achterburchwal, was betrothed to Elisabeth de Wael, from Haarlem, on 15 December 1629 (DTB 764/72). On 6 April 1637, Elisabeth de Wael (signs Waelle), wife of Barnardus Omphalius, having received certain goods (listed in an appendix, which is no longer extant) out of the hands of Jacob and Hendrick Omphalius, brothers of the afore-named Bernardus Omphalius, and with a procuration from the same, and thanked them for the good delivery (NA 487, Not. E. Cocq). On April 22 of the same year, Bernardus Omphalius transferred to his mother Anna Omphalius, as part payment on a loan, a chest with appertenances presently with Albert Pietersz., cloth finisher, and a money casket presently at the house of Jan Willemsz. Verboeghen, plus a bed and bedding and four bed sheets, and gave her full possession of these items (NA 487, fol. 155, Not. E.Cocq). On 27 February 1638, Jacob Omphalius and Hendrick Omphalius (of R 20580), brothers, also representing Bernhardus Omphalius, together children and co-heirs of the late Anthonie Omphalius, their father, gave a procuration to Willem Willemsz. Verdam, rentemeester, and Jan Sasz. Hocusen in Frederickstadt to sell a house in Frederickstadt which had belonged to their father (NA 522, film 4861, Not. Westfrisius). The brewery called De Nachtglas ran from the Singel to the Heerengracht (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 1119). On 13 March 1650, Elisabeth de Waal contracted with Pieter de Wael, silk spinner (her brother?) to buy all his silk-spinning equipment for 1435 f. Pieter could continue to use the equipment (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p. 550). By this time, her husband had probably already died.

BuyerJan Parijs de jonge
Buyer FamilyParijs, Jan, de jonge
Buyer NotesThe buyer is likely to be Jan Gerritsz. Parijs de jonge, who was the nephew of Jan Gerritsz. Parijs de oude who invested 3,600 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares in 1602. Jan Gerritsz. Parijs (de oude) was a wine dealer who, on 12 March 1612, named his son Pieter to represent him in some business (GAA, NA Ghysberty, film 52). Both the uncle and the nephew bought lots in the Haarlem lottery, but it is not clear which one was which. One lived on the O.Z. Achterburchwal in de Swarte Boeck (bought for 3 f. 12 st.) and the other on the Kolck in het gecroonde Ancker (GAA 21/50 F 148 and 115/15 F 847). It is likely that it was the older Parijs who swore a wine dealer's oath in 1621 since the Jan Parijs de jonge was only 24 at this time (see below) (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 137). In 1631, Jan Gerritsz. Parijs (de oude ?) paid a a tax of 12 f., living on the Buijtendijck (Kohier, p..53, fol. 230v). Jan Gerritsz. Parijs (de oude) was the grandfather of the children of Henrick Hoeffslager of INVNO 579. He seems to have been the brother-in-law of Anthony van der Horst of R 35472 (GAA, WK 674/175). On 21 December 1618, Jan Gerritsz. Parijs (de jonge), 22 years old, assisted by his father Gerrit Gerritsz. Parijs, living in the Dijckstraet, was betrothed to Judith Gerrits, 21, assisted by her mother Geertje Claes (DTB 668/214). On 18 February 1637, Jan Parijs, 40 (the age corresponding to that of Jan Gerritsz. Parijs de jonge) and Cornelis Dircx Cool (the brother-in-law of the engraver Jan Hermansz. Muller of R 32237), 42, heirs of Trijntgen Brandts, made a deposition concerning the taxation of certain houses in Amsterdam (NA 890, film 595). Gerrit Gerritsz. Parijs was a dyer in 1598 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 69(1929), p. 580.) It was probably the same Gerrit Parijs who was said to be 67 years old in a deposition of 7 August 1637 (NA 636B, film 4982). He was the uncle of the wine dealer Gysbert van Schendel whom he assisted when the latter was betrothed to Jannetie Elbers, from Loenen, widow of Jan Gerritsz. Kieft (of R 20503). It was probably Jan Parijs de jonge who was a schutter in 1623 and was painted by Cornelis van der Voort in that year (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, p. 18). Jan Gerritsz. Parijs (de oude) and Gerrit Gerritsz. Parijs were brothers of Marten Gerritsz. Parijs, droogschilder (drapier) and of Dirck Gerritsz. Parijs, who both died before 16 July 1619 (WK 5073/789). Dirck Gerritsz. Parijs was a shooter in the company of Adriaen Pietersz. Raep in 1603 (Oud Holland 15(1897), p. 134). Jan Gerritsz. Parijs (de oude) was buried on 24 August 1635 in the O.K. (DTB 1045/74). In a deposition dated 3 June 1634, Daniel van Beringen, 28 (cited in the NOTES to R 8218), stated that Jan Parijs de jonge was cargadoor van de besteeden van schippers (which perhaps meant that he assigned shippers to freighted ships) (NA 694B, film 4980, Not. J. Warnaerts). Jan (Gerritsz.) Parijs (de jonge), merchant, 39, also was cited in an act of 11 October 1635 (NA 948, film 1171, Not. Benedict Baddel).

BuyerFranchois Boudewijns
Buyer FamilyBoudewijns, Franchois (II) (alias van Berlicom)
Buyer NotesThe buyer was probably the merchant Franchois Boudewijns de jonge, born about 1580. He was the son of Frans Boudewijns de oude, of South Netherlandish origin, who married Jacqueline Chombart (Jaarboek Central Bureau voor Genealogie 50(1996), p. 124). The son spent some time in Stade in Germany before settling in Amsterdam, where he was first noted in 1609 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 296 and Prosopographic Data Base). It was probably Francoijs Boudewijns I who invested 45,260 f. in the second subscription for V.O.C. shares in 1612. (His uncle Aerdt Boudewijns invested 9,000 f. in the first subscription of 1602) (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 141 and 259). Frans Boudewijns de jonge paid a tax of 500 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the Keisersgracht (Kohier, fol. 299, p. 68). On 22 April 1614, Fransoijs Boudewijns (II) and Lucretie del Prado baptized their daughter Lucretie (DTB 39/249). Lucretia Boudewijns married Cornelis van Bambeeck, born in Leiden in 1602, on 13 May 1642 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 651). Franchoijs Boudewijns II was an elder of the Walloon church. He carried on trade with Lisbon and Marseille. He was said to be a merchant in Amsterdam when, together with Casper van Ceulen (I) and Ghijsbert Tolinx, he freighted a ship to England on 31 July 1613. He was called Francisco Boudewijns when he freighted another ship to Dantzig on 10 August 1621 (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel, R.G.P, 185(1983), p. 240, and 186(1984), p. 440). From the Italian version of his name, Francisco, and from the name of his wife (del Prato), we may infer that he had spent some time in Italy. On 29 January 1638, the eersame Francoijs Boudewijns sold land lying in the Beemster to Hendrick Wastrick, merchant (NA 695B, film 4982, Not. J. Warnaerts). On 5 July 1638, the inventory of Franchoys Boudewijnsz., merchant, was taken pursuant upon a decision of the aldermen dated 2 October 1636, apparently as a result of a dispute between Boudewijns and Robbert Chapmans (NA 483, film 6484). On 3 December 1639, Fransoys Boudewijns senior (II) (probably because he had a son of the same name) declared that he was satisfied by the payment of two insurers, Goyken Elbertsz. Snoeck and Davidt Otsen (of R 26691), for the loss of two ships on their return from Pernamboco. Otsen paid 200 pounds Flemish, Snoeck, 100 pounds (NA 480, fol. 255, Not. P. Mathijs, Extracten). The sister of Francoijs Boudewijns II, named Maria Boudewijns, born in Berlicom, married Johannes de Laet, from Antwerp. The marriage contract was signed on 15 April 1608 in the presence of Johanna Sanders, widow of Johan de Laet I, and of Franchoys Boudewijns I and his wife Jacqueline Chombart (Jaarboek C.B.G. loc. cit.) Johannes de Laet II, a prominent merchant, became a director of the W.I.C. When his sister Elisabeth de Laet was baptized on 22 November 1628, Francois Boudewijns, alias van Berlicom, and Maria van Loon were witnesses (Jaarboek C.B.G. op.cit. p. 124).

BuyerHerman de Bisschop
Buyer FamilyBisschop, Herman de
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Herman de Bisschop, was the son, by his second marriage, of Jan Phillipsz. de Bisschop (of R 27711) and of Lijsbeth Hermans. He was baptized in 1588 (DTB 1/360) and was buried in the N.K. on 21 February 1637 (DTB 1054/106vo). On 12 September 1624, Harmen de Bischop, from Amsterdam, 36 years old, no living parents, assisted by his brother Dirck de Bischop, living on the Coningsgracht, was betrothed to Aeltje Adriaans, from Amsterdam, 21, assisted by her parents Adriaen Jacobsz. and Griet Jans (DTB 670/1). Adriaen Jacobsz. was the stockviskooper, Bergenvaerder, and fiery Remonstrant of R 20404. When Jan Phillips de Bisschop died in 1623, he left an estate of f 120,000 for his three children (Elias, Vroedschap, pp. 146-7). Harmen Bisschop signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. On 19 December 1629, Dirck and Herman de Bisschop declared before the Orphan Chamber that Elisabeth, 8 years old, the daughter of Elisabeth de Bisschop, their sister, whose father is Jan Huydecooper, presently alderman, was entitled to 41,000 f. from the inheritance of her grandfather Jan de Bisschop, including a house on the Coningsgracht assessed at 14,000 f. (WK 5073/789). Elisabeth de Bisschop, baptized on 31 March 1591, married Joan Huydecooper on 20 July 1621 and was buried on 18 February 1622. Huydecoper also signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. He was knighted by Queen Christina of Sweden in 1634 and died in 1661. Herman de Bisschop remarried (on 9 July 1624) with Maria Coymans, the daughter of the rich merchant and art collector Balthasar Coymans (Elias, Vroedschap, pp. 384-5). Herman de Bisschop paid a tax of 300 f in 1631, at which time he lived on the Keisersgracht (Kohier, fol. 186v). His house on the Keisersgracht was built by the master mason Harmen Adriaensz. (Hesselingh) (E. van Houten, Grachten, p. 57). Harmen Adriaensz. seems to have been the brother of Pieter and Claesz. Adriaensz. van Delft, who were also master mason/sculptors. All three were trained by the architect Hendrick de Keyser (Ann Adams, The Paintings of Thomas de Keyser, Ph.D. Dissertation, p.21).

BuyerGerrit Soutberch
Buyer FamilySoutberch, Gerrit (Witts)
Buyer NotesIn 1606, Gerrit (Govertsz.? Witts?) Soutberch lived in the Sevenstar when he bought lots in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (144/29 F1047). In 1625, he was living in the Gouden Schaep with Hendrick Omphalius (R 20580). He seems to be identical with Gerrit Witts Souburch, who was living in Leiden in 1623 when he was cited in connection with the dyer Claes Barentsz. (NOTES to R 7625). He was related both to Barentsz. and to Goswinus van der Hal of INVNO 291 (see R 7625). It is clear from the will cited below that Gerrit Witts Souberch was related to Gerrit Govertsz. Souburch, married to Agnieta Jacobs Rauwart, the daughter of the collector Jacob Rauwart. Gerrit Govertsz. Souburch, of R 7632, apparently died in 1623. In his will he had named his brothers Jacob Govertsz. and Rutgert Govertsz. Souburch along with the children of Witte Govertsz. (of whom Gerrit Witts was presumably one), Jan Govertsz., Gysbert Govertsz. and Jannetge Goverts Souburch and the descendents of his half sister Maritgen Goverts (married to the Advocaet Fiscael Hendrick Storm) (WK 5073/889, 20 May 1623, fol. 158 vo. to fol. 178.) Gerhardt (Witts) Soutberch is listed among the signatories of the Remonstrant petition of 1628.

BuyerSymon Frans in de Buyscool
Buyer FamilyFrans (Fransz.), Symon
Buyer NotesOn 20 February 1625, the buyer of the present lot, Symon Frans Buyssecool, replacing his brother Jan Fransz. and his sister Heltje Frans, all heirs of Thomas Janssen Herman, their late uncle, made a claim to an inheritance from his uncle (NA 256, fol. 94). On the same day, the Orphan Chamber named him as guardian over the six children of his brother Joost Fransz., along with the fur worker Jan Jan Coenensz. (WK 5073/789, fol. 29). He apparently derived his family name from the place where he lived, as given above. He was a lumber dealer. Jan Francen Buyssecool, the brother of Symon Fransz., bought porcelain at the Orphan Chamber sale of 11 October 1624. In 1630, Symon Fransz. was involved in setting up a company for the exploitation of sawmills (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p.717 and p. 722). Symon Fransz., kistenmaecker (the presumed lumber merchant at a later date), from Leeuwarden, 22, was betrothed to Anne Symons, widow of Jacob Heynricksz., 32, on 12 July 1613 (DTB 61/295). He apparently remarried with Anna Pieters, with whom he appeared before the Orphan Chamber on 9 December 1625 as testament heir of Beth Jan Dommers. On this occasion he was said to be a lumber dealer (WK 5073/789). For one of the children of Symon Fransz., named Frans, the estate owed 30 f. on account of his learning how to paint (ter sake hij schilderen is lerende) (NA 713, film 5147, 15 February 1625). For the sale of Joost Fransen's possessions, which took place on 10 April 1625, see INVNO 612. On 6 May 1625, Jan Coenensz., fur worker, was named as guardian over the heirs of Beth Jan Dommers (cited above) (WK 5073/513, fol. 33vo). In 1631, Simon Fransz., living in the Houttuynen, paid a tax of 60 f. His son Pieter, living in the same house, paid 5 f. The children from Joost Fransz.'s previous marriage (voorkinderen), also located in the same house or nearby, paid 100 f. (Kohier, fol. 73, p. 18). Symon Fransz. Buijssecool was married to Levina Spiegels at the time of his death, which must have occurred before 27 July 1638 when his widow was mentioned (NA 1498). Symon Fransz., lumber dealer, should not be confused with the individual of the same name whose post-mortem auction took place on 8 November 1617 (INVNO 1052).

BuyerSalomon Walens bij de 6 huysen
Buyer FamilyWalens (Wallens), Salomon
Buyer NotesSalomon Walens lived in a house on the Deventer Houtmarkt called the Vlasblom (right by 6 huysen ?), near the home of Johan Elison Jr. whose parents were portrayed by Rembrandt in 1634 (Schwartz, Rembrandt, 1985, p. 158). He paid a tax of 100 f. in 1631, at which time he was living on the Deventer Houtmarckt (Kohier, fol. 277, p.63). On 13 July 1635, Salomon Walens caused Nicolas Jacobs to go to the house of Paule Kont (Paul le Comte of R 35364), lequel selon le commun bruit s'est absenté comme insolvent. This insinuation, drawn up in French, concerned two unpaid letters of exchange (NA 412A, Not. Nicolas Jacobsz.) On 27 October 1635, Sr. Salomon Walens, merchant, as uncle of and guardian over the children left by his brother Moyses Walens, procreated by the late Janneken Willocqeau, daughter of Christian Willocqueau, and Maria Marechal, sister of Gillis Marechal, named Germain Poulle, likewise merchant, to collect money due to Gillis Marechal who had died in 1598 (NA 412B, fol. 292, Not. Jacob and Nicolas Jacobsz.) Germain Poulle, son of Dominique and Jenne de la Cambre, was the father of Pierre Poulle, merchant, first in Calais, then in Amsterdam (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p. 671). On 14 March 1641, Pierre Poulle, acting on behalf of his father German Poulle, made an agreement with the surgeon Rochus van Dijck to take care of his father's hernia (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p.297). Maria and Gillis Mareschal, children of Joost Mareschal, made a declaration on 8 January 1625 at the request of Jeremias Hagens (of R 25243) who at that time was working with Daniel van Asch, cake baker (NA 256, film 127, fol. 76vo.) On 7 March 1650, Salomon Walens, healthy in body, passed his testament. He left 3000 f. to the poor of the Reformed religion and 1000 f. to the poor of the Walloon community, to be given (immediately) after the testateur's death. He left to his aunt, Susanna Lodewycx, if she was still alive at the time of his death. 6,000 f. and various bequests to (named) servants, preachers, and their relatives. He left to Salomon Walens, the son of Christiaen Waelens 6,000 f. to be vested on his father Christiaen until Salomon reached maturity and to the same Salomon his, testateur's, portrait by Rembrandt. He left the above-mentioned Susanna Lodewycx, his aunt, the right to live in his house on the Deventer markt plus 50 f. per month in living costs (montcosten). His universal heirs were the sons Nicolaes and Christiaen of his late brother Moses Walens, together with Elisabet Walens, married to Salomon Dierquens, and Maria Walens, married to Charles Gabri (NA 1818, film 2083). Solomon Walens died in 1658 (I. van Eeghen, Maandblad Amstelodamum, 43(1956)). Nicolaes Walens, who also lived on the Deventer Houtmarkt, was born in Cologne. He was 22 years old when, on 12 February 1639, assisted by his uncle and guardian Salomon Wallens, he was betrothed to Susanna de Latfeur, from Utrecht, 22, assisted by her mother Hester van der Meulen (DTB 450/125). Susanna de Latfeur was the sister of Charles de Latfeur of R 20471. On 31 March 1644, Nicolaes Walens and Susanna de Latfeur had their daughter Hester baptized in the Waals Kerck in the presence of Corsten (Christiaen) Walens, Marie de Latfeur, femme de Charles Gabry, and Catharina de Latfeur, veuve de Nicolas Ruth (DTB 131/115). This Nicolaes Ruth may be identical with Nicolaes Ruts II, the son of Nicolaes Ruts I, whose portrait was painted by Rembrandt (see the NOTES to 24918 and the TEXT of R 369 of INVNO 468). On 22 May 1645, Nicolaes Walens and Susanna de Latfeur had their son Salomon baptized in the same church in the presence of Charles de Latfeur, Salomon Walens, and Marie Walens (DTB 131/75). Nicolaes Wallens remarried on 4 May 1666 with Barbara Wolters Stevens, the widow of Raymond de Smeth Joostens of R 23589 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 517). In a notarial act of 18 February 1650, he was said to be lord of Buttegens and Santvoort, probably a seigneurie that he had bought. In this act, Charles Godijn (at whose request INVNO 118 of David van Baerle and Rachel Godijn was drawn up), Nicolaes Walens, Charles Gabry (Salomon Wallens's son-in-law), Salomon Dierques (his other son-in-law), and Anthoni Godijn contracted to form a company to exploit lands in the meer called De Stom in Aelsmeer. David van Baerle also signed the contract (NA 1818, film 2083). On 18 April 1667, Hans Pelt II (c.1600-1668) and Nicolaes Wallen drew up an agreement whereby certain equipment belonging to a sugar refinery would be assessed by two arbiters and would then be bought by Wallens at the prices so assessed (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p. 760). On 29 February 1668, Willem Jacobsen de Leeuw and Dirck Isaacksz. issued their assessments, which totaled 854 f. (Van Dillen, op.cit. p. 773). Christiaen Wallens, the brother of Nicolaes Wallens, was married to Cornelia Jacott. On 14 August 1650, the couple had their daughter Elisabeth baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Michiel Hoppesack (the son of Gysbrecht Hoppesack of R 32342) and Susanna Walens (DTB 8/280). Balthasar Jacott (II) (portrait cited in R 43675) was Christiaen Walens's brother-in-law (see the NOTES to R 43675). The son of Balthasar Jacob I, named Jan Jacot (c.1631-after 1683), married Elisabeth Hoppesack. The couple and their children were portrayed by Pieter de Hooch (Amsterdammers geportreeterd; Kopstukken 1600-1800, p. 219). Elisabeth Hoppesack of this marriage is not identical with the woman of the same name, born in 1625, who married Abraham Wijmer (see the NOTES to R 21592). Christiaen Walens became insolvent in 1661. For his inventory see INVNO 1164.

BuyerCornelis Mourisz. in de Princenhofsteegh
Buyer FamilyMourisz., Cornelis (Hobbe)
Buyer NotesOn 11 May 1613, Kornelis Hobben, from Rotterdam, schipper (skipper), widower of Neeltie Aenen, living in Rotterdam, was betrothed to Grietje Jakobs, 20, living on the Nieuwe Dijck. Both were literate (DTB 417/121). On 11 August 1615, Cornelis Hobbe and Griet Jacobs had their son Huybert baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Susanna van Cors (DTB 39/394). In an act of 14 September 1624, Dr. Nicolaes Wassenaer (of INVNO 260) and Cornelis Mauritse Hobbe, venduemeester (auction master) of the Admiralty, confirmed the death of Balthasar Schellekes, at the request of his widow (NA 389, fol. 121, cited in Jaarboek Amstelodamum 56(1964), p. 79). On 23 April 1631, Anneke Claes, widow of Pieter Heyn (the freebooter who captured the Spanish silver fleet), gave a procuration in Delft to Cornelis Hobbe to collect back wages and other emoluments to which her late husband had been entitled from the Admiralty in Amsterdam (Nederlandsche Leeuw 28(1910), col. 220). Cornelis Mourisz. Hobbe, livig in the Princehoffsteegh, paid a tax of 10 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 243vo, p. 56). The address of the taxpayer, which coincides with that of the buyer, confirms the identification. On 18 June 1632, Adriaen van Swaenswyck, controlleur(?) of the auction sales of the Admiralty, declared at the request of Jan Engels Gaijsweeck that Cornelis Maurits Hobbe, former auction master, had signed the schedule of his sale and had handed it to him (NA 991, fol.29, Not. J. Bosch). On 12 September 1635, Samuel Wellecorn, butcher, living in Leiden, but presently in Amsterdam, named Cornelis Mauritsz. Hobbe to collect wages due to his son Samuel who had died in the East Indies. Samuel Wellecorn was illiterate (NA 412A, Not. Jacob and Nicolas Jacobsz.) On 6 March 1637, Jan Jansz., 60, declared at the request of Cornelis Mauritsz. Hobbe, on behalf and in the name of Ceeltge Pieters, widow of Captain Herman Maurisz. Hobbe (presumably his brother), that he, witness, was the owner of a house on the Bomendwarssloot, next to the Blaeuwe Vlootschuyt, which rented in the late 1620s for 120 to 150 f. a year (NA 991, fol.112, Not. J. Bosch). This was probably the house on the Boomdwarssloot owned by Jan Jansz. on which he paid a tax of 35 f. in 1631. (Kohier fol.124, p.29). On 9 August 1639, Teuntgen Hobbe, 50, wife of Adriaen Dommessen, Tryntge Lodewycx, 38, wife of Jan Dirxsen, and Clara Huybrechts, spinster, 25, declared at the request of Cornelis Hobbe, father of Stijntge Cornelis, married to Cornelis Willemsen Amelandt, that, last October, they had been at Amelandt's house when Stijntje Cornelis had been at home. Cornelis Willemsz. Amelandt had then arrived with a certain Pieter Danielsen, shoemaker. A fight had arisen. The witnesses noted that Stijntge Cornelis, who was three weeks in de craem, had grabbed a bare knife in her hand and threatened her husband with it. (I could not make out whether this was true or only alleged). Apparently Cornelis Willemsz. Amelandt had not sought for help. The witnesses claimed that the deposition made by Pieter Danielsen before Notary Coren was false and deceptive. Trijntgen Hobbe (Cornelis's sister) signed, as did Clara Huybrechts. Trijntgen Lodewycx apposed her mark (NA 1413, film 1381, Not. F. Bruyningh). Cornelis Willemsz. Amelandt may have been the brother of the soap boiler Willem Willemsz. (van) Amelandt of INVNO 1222. On 7 (or 17) June 1643, Cornelis Hobbe, merchant, for himself and for his sister Teuntgen Hobbe, as co-heiress of an heritage, named Lenert Pietersz. Kruijt to sell a house to Jan Jansz. Kuyper (NA 997, film 1228, Notary Gerrit Coren). In October 1644 (exact date unknown), Jacob Vlack (cited in the NOTES to R 21354) contracted with Cornelis Hobbe to take on his son Jacob Hobbe for four years as an apprentice merchant. Jacob would live in Vlack's house. Cornelis Hobbe agreed to pay Vlack 200 f. for the first two years and 100 f. for the last two of the contracted period (NA 998, film 1882, Notary Gerrit Coren).

BuyerJasper Walendael in de Bantamstraet
Buyer FamilyWalendael (Wallendael), Jasper (Casper)
Buyer NotesOn 25 November 1620, Jaspar Wallendael, from Schiedam, 31 years old, no living parents, living on the Coningsgracht, was betrothed to Gertruijtje Croon, from Riga, 23, assisted by her mother Geertruy Croon (DTB 425/145). On 9 March 1625, the couple had their son Caspar baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Immetje Croon and Goosen Cornelisz. (DTB 6/109). Goosen Cornelisz. may be the town crier (stadtroeper) of that name at whose request the inventory of Barent Mylman was taken on 27 April 1639 (NA 821, film 1151, Not. Verbeecq). On 27 September 1626, Jasper Wallendael and Gertruijd Croon had their daughter Marija baptized in the same church in the presence of Elijsabeth Hudde and of Jan Jacobsz. Veen (DTB 6/153). On 10 September 1629, the couple had their son Nicolaes baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Joris Aertsz. Banck (DTB 6/250). Joris Aertsz. Banck was the father of Adriaen Banck, who bought a painting of Susanna from Rembrandt in 1647 and whose portrait was painted also by Rembrandt. Joris Aertsz. was buried on 18 November 1640 (Schiedam GA, Begraaf Register). Jasper Walendael paid a tax of 60 f. in 1631, at which time he was living on the Keysersgracht (Kohier, p. 67, fol. 295v). On 9 August 1634, Jasper van Wallendael, 45, and Claes Pietersz. van Hoorn, 28, both merchants, declared at the request of Jan Jansz. van Cley, first Wallendael that he had sold Cley last January 68 barrels of geers at the price of 17 f. 10 st. per barrel, which Cley had paid for (NA 694B, film 4980, Not. J. Warnaerts). On 27 March 1637, Jasper van Wallendael gave Barber Egberts assurance that he would support a child (which he had apparently procreated with Barber) until his majority or his marriage. Barber Egberts declared that she would no longer make demands on Jouffr. van Wallendael (NA 643, film 4954, fol. 154). Jasper Wallendael seems to have been a flax merchant. On 6 October 1637, he declared that he had sold flax to Jochum Jochumsz., flax dealer, in a deposition requested by Jacob Vlack (NA 695B, film 4982). Johan Casparsz. Wallendael, the son of Jasper Wallendael I, married Elisabeth de Marez, widow of Johan de Bas, son of Lodewijck de Bas and Magdalena van Brugge (of INVNO 303) (Jaarboek C.B.G. 44(1990) p.181). Another son, Nicolaes Casparszoon, married Margaretha Vlieck, the daughter of Rutger Vlieck and Margareta Spiegels (Oud Holland 57(1939), p.32).

BuyerJacob van Beeck
Buyer FamilyBeeck, Jacob van
Buyer NotesThe buyer, Jacob van Beeck, seems to be identical with the individual of that name who was said to be the brother-in-law of Casper Vortgens, merchant in Haarlem. On 22 March 1628, Jacob van Beeck received 50 pounds of twineyarn on Vortgens's behalf as security for a debt of f 800 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P.78(1933), p. 648). It is likely that Vortgens is an alternative spelling (or misspelling) of Versen, Virsen, or Versten and that Jacob van Beeck was thus related to Anna van Virsen Goosens, the wife of Hendrick Hoeffslager of the present inventory. On 28 January 1625, Jacob van Beeck and Dirck van Wissel (of R 20620) were named guardians over the children of Hendrick Hoefslager by the Orphan Chamber (WK 5073/513, fol. 27). On 20 March 1626, Jacob van Beeck brought receipts for deposits in the Wisselbank for the sum of 8,000 f. on behalf of Gosterwyn, 12, and Ermtgen, 10, the two children left by Heyndrick Hoefslager, silk cloth dealer, whose mother was Anna van Virsen (WK 5073/789, lade 307). On 30 May 1633, Jacob van Beeck, merchant, 30, and Govert Boeckholt, goldsmith, 29, declared at the request of Hendrick van Beeck (probably the brother-in-law of Christina van Steenkiste of INVNO 109) that the goldsmith's equipment of Franchoijs Dusart had been sold (NA 694B, film 4980 Not. J. Warnaerts). Jacob van Beeck is likely to be the silk dyer whose insolvent inventory was taken on 2 November 1657 (DBK 5072/365, fol. 10, INVNO 1149). Jacob van Beeck witnessed a list of possessions belonging to Rembrandt and Saskia in 1659 (Strauss, Rembrandt Documents, p. 443). He is likely to be related to Isaack van Beeck, also known to have been in contact with Rembrandt, cited the NOTES to R 2873 and R 26643.

BuyerDirck van Wissel
Buyer FamilyWissel, Dirck van
Buyer NotesOn 16 September 1622, Dirck van Wisselt, from Haarlem, 28 years old, living on the Nieuwen Dijck, was betrothed to Catharina Rombouts, 27, assisted by her mother Nannick (Anna) de Wilde, living on the Fluwele Burchwal (DTB 427/255). He was already living on the Nieuwen Dijck on 10 July 1617 when he was said to have bought 77 pounds of colored silk from a German merchant (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 244). Catharina Rombouts was the daughter of Jacques Rombouts (of INVNO 727) and the sister of Jacob Rombouts (of R 19454) who married Gertruyd Arminius, the daughter of the famous predikant Jacobus Arminius. On 7 May 1628, Dirck van Wissel and Catharina Rombouts had their son Joannes baptized in the N.K. in the presence of his maternal uncle Jacob (Jacquesz.) Rombouts (DTB 40/450). On 28 January 1625, the masters of the Orphan Chamber named Dirck van Wissel and Jacob van Beeck (of R 20619) as guardians over the children of Hendrick Hoefslager of INVNO 579 (WK 5073/513, fol. 27). On 12 December 1625, Dirck van Wissel declared before the Orphan Chamber that his children that he has or may still have with Catherina Rombouts were entitled to a legacy of 8,000 f. from their grand uncle Hans Rombouts (of INVNO 200, R 118 of Montias1) (WK 5073/789). Dirck van Wissel paid a tax of 120 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the Keysersgracht (Kohier, p. 68, fol. 296). From a declaration dated 10 July 1617, published by Van Dillen (Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 244), it would appear that Dirck van Wissel or Wesselt, living on the Nieuwen Dijck, was a cloth merchant. On 1 February 1636, Willem Sweers and Dirck van Wisselt, who, besides Guilliamen Sweers (of R 30037), were administrators of the Blaeuwe Huijs in Amsterdam left by Hans Rombouts, merchant (of INVNO 200), named Guilliam Sweers to act in their behalf in a suit against Flips Rombouts living in France (NA 597, fol. 242-3, Not. Lamberti). On 27 March 1636, Dirck van Wisselt and Hendrick Verburgh (of R 7658), both merchants, were guardians over the children of Leendert Pietersen Goud Appel. The former gave the latter a procuration to appear before the court in The Hague regarding a suit that the estate was carrying on with Marten Crijnssen Weijtes (NA 521, film 6505, Not. Westfrisius). On 26 January 1638, Dirck van Wisselt, merchant, 44 (confirming the year of his birth given at the time of his betrothal above), gave a deposition at the request of Maria Wouters, widow of Lenert Pieters Gout Appel (ibid.). On 27 January 1638, Catharina Rombouts, wife of Dirck van Wisselt, merchant, made a codicille to her testament, naming Charles (Carel) van Peenen instead of Willem Sweers as one of her heirs (NA 522, film 4861, Not. Westfrisius). Carel van Peenen I, who died between 1609 and 1617, and Carel van Peenen II were merchants of South Netherlandish origin (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 310). Carel van Peenen (or Pennen) II married (in Delft) Anna Hoynck on 13 June 1623. He was related to Hans van Solt II via the latter's second wife, whose sister was married to Pieter van Peene (De Navorscher 84(1935), p. 36). Carel van Peenen II owned a house on the Rozengracht which was leased by the painter Nicolaes Rosendael (Bredius, Künstler-inventare p.546). Jan Fasijn died on 19 September 1646, his wife Catharina Rombouts on 12 October 1661 (Nederlandse Leeuw 1924, p. 212.)

He was the son of Jacob Willemsz., lakenkooper in den blaeuwen Helm and of Aeltge Jacobs Seeu (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 408). When the post-mortem inventory of Aeltgen Jacobs was taken on 14 November 1623, she was said to be the widow of Jacob Willemsz. Blaunhelm (NA 255, film 127, fol. 411, Not. Meerhout). On 18 September 1621, Jacob Jacobsz. Blaeuhelm and Trijntje Claes had their daughter Aeltgen baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Hendrick Lourensz., Trijntje Jacobs, and Annetge Dowisdr.
